Download or read book Gender and Family Among Transnational Professionals written by Anne Coles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While interest in migration flows is ever-growing, this has mostly concentrated on disadvantaged migrants moving from developing to Western industrialised countries. In contrast, Euro-American mobile professionals are only now becoming an emergent research topic. Similarly, debates on the connections between gender and migration rarely consider these kind of migrants. This volume fills these gaps by investigating impact of relocation on gender and family relations among today’s transnational professionals.

Book excerpt: People and places: A 2001 Census atlas of the UK provides an at-a-glance guide to social change in the UK at the start of the new millennium. It is the first comprehensive analysis of the 2001 Census and offers unique comparisons with the findings of the previous Census a decade ago. Over 500 full-colour maps covering 125 topics clearly illustrate the state of UK society today and how it is changing. The trends are explained and elaborated upon in the accompanying text. Using population maps in addition to conventional maps, the atlas covers all the major census topics at local authority level. Key features include an illuminating graphic summary of over 100,000 key demographic statistics; new cartographic projections and techniques used throughout ; appendix incorporating rankings for 25 selected topics by local authority; comparison with the 1991 census to identify national and local trends and up-to-date analysis and discussion of the implications of current trends for future policy. This authoritative atlas is essential reading for those interested in the current social geography of the UK, how it has changed and how it appears to be changing, including for planners in local authorities, health authorities and a wide range of statutory and voluntary organisations. It is also an invaluable resource for policy makers, journalists, politicians, students and academics interested in human geography and social change.

Book Margaret Thatcher

Download or read book Margaret Thatcher written by Robert Philpot and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Thatcher's premiership changed the face of modern Britain. Yet few people know of the critical role played by Jews in sparking and sustaining her revolution. Was this chance, choice, or simply a reflection of the fact that, as the Iron Lady herself said: 'I just wanted a Cabinet of clever, energetic people and frequently that turned out to be the same thing'? In this book, the first to explore Mrs Thatcher's relationship with Britain's Jewish community, Robert Philpot shows that her regard did not come simply from representing a constituency with more Jewish voters than any other, but stretched back to her childhood. She saw her own philosophical beliefs expressed in the values of Judaism – and in it, too, she saw elements of her beloved father's Methodist teachings. Margaret Thatcher: The Honorary Jew explores Mrs Thatcher's complex and fascinating relationship with the Jewish community and draws on archives and a wide range of memoirs and exclusive interviews, ranging from former Cabinet ministers to political opponents. It reveals how Immanuel Jakobovits, the Chief Rabbi, assisted her fight with the Church of England and how her attachment to Israel led her to internal battles as a member of Edward Heath's government and as Prime Minister, as well as examining her relationships with various Israeli leaders.

Book Indo Pacific Smart Megacity System

Download or read book Indo Pacific Smart Megacity System written by T. M. Vinod Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth study of the Indo-Pacific region for effective interventions in the megacities system. First, based on several criteria, the region is identified as homogeneous country groupings of diversity, a multi-polar spatial system, and as program regions of QUAD and I2U2 for action programs and investment transcending many nations but mostly the ocean space of the Indo-Pacific, connecting all megacities sub-regions spatially and functionally. Then, the megacities with problems and prospects for economic integration are studied from the point of view of regional economics and international trade, and finally, the rural–urban interface with case studies of selected countries is presented. Prospects of systems of megacities and individual megacities for regional economies are designed. Existing interconnections through rail, air, and ocean of megacity systems, their capacity, performance, and potential are analyzed for emerging issues. International trade among the megacity systems/countries with emerging issues and barriers are presented. The mobility of money, goods, and services among the systems of megacities is analyzed. Rule-based diplomacy and other emerging options are discussed to sustain the above calls for a study of the Security of the Indo-Pacific region. Finally, the emerging architecture for megacity system governance is also presented. Out of 21 megacities in the Indo-Pacific, an in-depth study of a few in India and Japan in the Indo-Pacific region for effective economic interventions in the megacities system at the city level was studied. COVID-19 has affected most of the countries in the Indo-Pacific. With a contraction of GDP and a GDP growth rate negative, the number below the poverty level increased. Foreign Direct Investment is not forthcoming in any of these countries. Job creation becomes a priority in addition to public health concerns connected with COVID-19.

Book Inside the Black Box of White Backlash

Download or read book Inside the Black Box of White Backlash written by Olivier Esteves and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside the Black Box of ‘White Backlash’ researches the contents of the letters of support sent to British politician Enoch Powell in the wake of his so-called ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech of April 20, 1968. Never has a politician received so much written support in so short a time. This book takes a thematic approach to investigate the way British whites used Powell’s speech to vent their frustrations, anger, hostility against (non-white) immigrants and the evolution of British society in the late 1960s. Each chapter unpacks one facet of a 10,000-letter sample, out of the approximately 100,000 letters Powell received: Race, State, War, Empire, America, Class, Gender, Elites, Parties, ‘Against’ - with this last chapter analysing letters of protest against Powell. This extraordinary archival material provides an altogether unique window into British society in the late 1960s and reads like a (white) anthropology of nativist Britons in times of swift change. The book will be of interest to both students and academics of race, immigration and ethnicity, as well as by the general public. Olivier Esteves appears in this short video about the book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0lA5Nb9cso
