Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sappho and Phaon: A Tragedy This volume constitutes the text of Mr. Harrison Grey Fiske's production of Sappho and Phaon for Madame Kalich and her company, and consists of that main portion of my published play entitled T he Tragedy. The other portions - Prologue, In duction, Prelude, Interludes, and Epilogue - which form an archaeological setting for The Tragedy, or play proper, it has been decided in the present pro duction to omit; not because they are considered by manager or author as impractical for use in the theatre, or as disproportionate in relation to the whole, but because the results of their inclusion were not deemed sufficiently predictable to warrant their pro duction at this time. And in this decision the author has heartily concurred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Certain notices of the early state of Lesbos, and the lives of Sappho, Alcaeus, Erinna, etc., and the Tyrants who governed, or misgoverned, the Island, are to be found in Muller's Dorians, a learned German work. I have used, and abused, these lights, as it suited me, believing that there is nothing in the early history of the Island of Lesbos so incontrovertibly authenticated as to discredit and stultify my fanciful escapades, when, by jibbing occasionally, I could show off the paces of my Pegasus to greater advan tage. But, upon the whole, I have been faithful to the hints afforded me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phaon and Sappho: A Play, With Selection of Poems I am unwilling to let "Phaon and Sappho" pass from my control into the outer world without a word of apology for one or two anachronisms, which if not apparent to the general reader, will readily suggest themselves to the scholar. It will be seen that Melanthus in putting his daughters innocence to the test of arms, adopts the manners of chivalry, in which the fundamental ideas with regard to womanhood were entirely different from those held by the Greeks, during the time in which the events of this Play are supposed to have had place. The nearest approach to the tournament of chivalry in classic writers is the contest between Paris and Menelaus, in the III Book of the Iliad, where the chance of victory as deciding the virtue of a third person is never once dreamed of, to the Greek such a subtilty would be above the proof of a physical issue! Also it may be said that Grecian ideas were insufficient to express the fulness and entirety of Kuman life, according to the usages of the modern Playwright as its exponent: - accordingly here and there some words may suggest ideas which were unknown to the Greek before the institution of Christianity; but which are perfectly at home in a work - 'Withholding time, But flattering the golden prime." At this time so prolific in criticism, it would be rather late to point out anachronisms similar to those which I have alluded to in my own work, in the writings of some of the first rate minds of the past. I leave Phaon and Sappho therefore to those who are able to take the impression of an unsophisticated human nature and age, uncurbed by the critical element which surrounds the conventionalities of modern life. Download or read book The Madness of Vision written by Christine Buci-Glucksmann and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-27 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine Buci-Glucksmann’s The Madness of Vision is one of the most influential studies in phenomenological aesthetics of the baroque. Integrating the work of Merleau-Ponty with Lacanian psychoanalysis, Renaissance studies in optics, and twentieth-century mathematics, the author asserts the materiality of the body and world in her aesthetic theory. All vision is embodied vision, with the body and the emotions continually at play on the visual field. Thus vision, once considered a clear, uniform, and totalizing way of understanding the material world, actually dazzles and distorts the perception of reality. In each of the nine essays that form The Madness of Vision Buci-Glucksmann develops her theoretical argument via a study of a major painting, sculpture, or influential visual image—Arabic script, Bettini’s “The Eye of Cardinal Colonna,” Bernini’s Saint Teresa and his 1661 fireworks display to celebrate the birth of the French dauphin, Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes, the Paris arcades, and Arnulf Rainer’s self-portrait, among others—and deftly crosses historical, national, and artistic boundaries to address Gracián’s El Criticón; Monteverdi’s opera Orfeo; the poetry of Hafiz, John Donne, and Baudelaire; as well as baroque architecture and Anselm Kiefer’s Holocaust paintings. In doing so, Buci-Glucksmann makes the case for the pervasive influence of the baroque throughout history and the continuing importance of the baroque in contemporary arts.

Book Scenes from the Marriage of Louis XIV

Download or read book Scenes from the Marriage of Louis XIV written by Abby E. Zanger and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book radically revises our understanding of the construction of symbolic power in the age of absolutism by examining the fictions that emerge from visual, narrative, and ceremonial representations of (and reactions to) the 1660 marriage of Louis XIV to the Spanish infanta. Drawing on semiotics, the history of theater and spectacle, gender studies, and anthropology, the author reconsiders the nature of representation in absolutist political culture. The book is not intended as a history of the marriage. Rather, the author analyzes in detail exemplary moments or scenes from the royal wedding, in particular uncovering the dialectic at the heart of nuptial fictions. Like the kinship exchange out of which they emerge, fictions of marriage manipulate antagonistic forces in the service of promoting the political culture of absolutism. The nuptial fiction portrays a king who though central, is not yet absolute, and who depends on images and representational forms to become visible. His perceived power relies on appendages such as the queen and forms like print, fireworks, and drama. A calculus of addition, this dependence is invisible from within the models previously used to explore the representation of sovereignty, models based on rituals of substitution like the funeral rite. Though the fictions generated during Louis XIV’s marriage are not the principal ones of his rule, they do affect the portrait of the king and provide insight into the making of an image scholars too frequently take for granted. Studying nuptial fictions invites us to reexamine clichés about the representation of absolutist power, generalizations that do not fully characterize the less monumental (but equally crucial) periods of Louis XIV’s kingship.
