Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 41 For our own parts, the Commissioner and myself were de sirons, before setting out, to procure another attendant well versed in wood craft, who might serve us as a hunter for our little F rench man would have his hands full when in camp, in cooking, and on the march, in taking care of the pack-horses. Such a One presented himself, or rather was recommended to us, in Pierre Beatte, a half-breed of French and Osage parentage. We were assured that he was acquainted with all parts of the coun try, having traversed it in all directions, both in hunting and war parties; that he would be of use both as guide and interpreter, and that he was a first rate hunter. I confess I did not like his looks when he was first presented to me. He was lounging about, in an old hunting frock and metasses or leggins, of deer skin, soiled and greased, and almost japanned by constant use. He was apparently about thirty-six years of age, square and strongly built. His features were not bad, being shaped not unlike those of Napoleon, but sharpened up, with high Indian cheek bones. Perhaps the dusky greenish hue of his complexion, aided his resemblance to an old bronze bust I had seen of the Emperor. He had, however, a sullen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 161: July, 1895 We must be a little wary when Brander Matthews tells us that Cooper's books reveal an extraordinary fulness of invention. As a rule, I am quite willing to accept Brander Matthews's literarv judgments and applaud his lucid and graceful phrasing of them but that particular statement needs to be taken with a few tons of salt. Bless your heart, Cooper hadn't any more invention than a horse; and I don't mean a high class horse, either; I mean a clothes-horse. It would be very difficult to find a really clever situation in Cooper's books and still more difficult to find one of any kind which he has failed to render absurd by his handling of it. Look at the episodes of the caves i and at the cele brated scuffle between Maqua and those others on the table-land a few days later and at Hurry Harry's queer water-transit from the castle to the ark and at Deerslayer's half hour with his first corpse and at the quarrel between Hurry Harry and Deerslayer later and at - but choose for yourself you can't go amiss. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 131 Prince Bismarck's sentiments toward America are mainly those of the German people as a whole so that it is enough to say that these sentiments may be further explained by the fact that the tem per of the American people and that of our great regenerator have some qualities in common with each other, of which I need only mention here the daring and far-sighted policy, the bold and per sistent triumph over all difficulties, and, above all, the realistic views and treatment of affairs observable in the entire conduct of them both. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 144 The next generation will find it hard to believe that of the four men living at the outbreak of the war who had occupied the presidential chair not one tendered his support to the National cause, or offered sympathy or patriotic counsel to his overburdened successor at the head of the Government. It will be deemed almost incredible that during the whole four years of that terrible struggle not one of these men, all of whom were citizens of Northern States, made any public utterance intended to strengthen the Union cause or indeed any utterance at all upon the subject, except in one case, when compelled by public clamor to make a lame excuse for his own apathy. Already it is hard to realize that when the conflict drew to its close one of these men refused to decorate his house in honor of our final tri-victory, or display the emblems of mourning on the death of the great leader whose marvelous tact and unfailing steadfastness had brought us through those years of unmatched peril. Still more difficult will it be for posterity to understand that our ex-Presidents were simply types of a very large element of our people. These very naturally desired the war, its causes and overshadowing glories to be forgotten just as soon as possible. They made haste, therefore, to turn the public attention into other channels and to clamor for oblivion in regard to the past. There was another and most peculiar influence tending in this direction. The political organization then having control of the country had in it two elements which looked with especial disfavor on the ascendency within itself of those whose fame rested on military renown. One of these was what was known as the "Abolition Element." These men regarded themselves as, in a sense, the possessors of an exclusive proprietary interest in the Republican party of that day, and thought that the laurels of its first administration, both civic and military, ought to relate back to them as the ultimate cause, rather than rest upon the heads of the immediate agents. Such men as Chase, Sumner, Seward, Greeley, and a host of lesser lights, felt deeply aggrieved at being overshadowed by men like Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, and Stanton, and other military leaders whom they regarded, if not us trespassers on their demesne, at least as men who had merely adopted their ideas and reaped advantage from their labors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 279: February, 1880 Presidential office after their second term, has become, by universal concur rence, a part of our republican system of government, and that any departure from this time-honored custom would be unwise, unpatriotic, and fraught with peril to our free institutions. The rules of the House were suspended, and the resolution passed on the very day of its introduction. No less than two hun dred and thirty-three votes were recorded in its favor. Only eigh teen members voted against it. That reiterated vociferation accomplished the purpose for which it was designed. It defeated the renomination of General Grant in 1876. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 70 Literary history is the least familiar kind of historical writing. It is, in some respects, the most difficult, requiring, and certainly, far the most laborious study. The facts for civil history we gather from personal experience, or from the examination of a comparatively few authors, whose statements the historian transfers, with such modification and commentary as he pleases, to his own pages. But in literary history, the books are the facts, and pretty substantial ones in many cases, which are not to be mastered at a glance, or on the report of another. It is a tedious process to read through a library in order to decide that the greater part is probably not worth reading at all. Literary history must come late in the intellectual development of a nation. It is the history of books, and there can be no history of books till books are written. It presupposes, moreover, a critical knowledge, - an acquaintance with the principles of taste, which can come only from a wide study and comparison of models. It is, therefore, necessarily the product of an advanced state of civilization and mental culture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 101 The peculiarity with which slavery usually stamps its victims is effected not so much by a positive brand of its own as by simply removing him from that contact with circumstance which is the normal condition of growth. Outside of slavery, even in almost every depth of barbarism, circumstances serve to increase human power. But in slavery, not only are natural rights denied, but, what is quite as injurious, necessary wants are supplied; everything contributes to the repression of faculty. The slaveholder's institution is a nursery for perpetuating infancy; and the more enlightened the nurse, the more successful his efforts. The world has waited for the nineteenth century and republican institutions to develop slavery in its hugest and most direful proportions; and now that the man-owner's reckless pride has made its fatal mistake, the most shameful spectacle that ever saddened earth is opened for the nations to behold, - the spectacle of a race of stunted, misshapen children, writhing from the grasp of that people which, in so many respects, is the foremost of the age. It is this immaturity that occasions the chief difficulty in analyzing the negro's nature, as we see it in the South. In each separate faculty of his mental and moral constitution we miss the effect of training. No tendency has had scope to display its direction and vigor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 31 Mr. Jefferson, in his letter on the kings of Europe, charges Joseph II. of Austria with insanity. It may be worth the while to give a little time to the consideration of the character of a ruler, about whom opinions have been so much divided. The materials are abundant, and now that the age of revolutions is past, history may be just to the imperial reformer. The prince, for whom Mozart composed music, Kaunitz negotiated, and Laudon won victories, occupies a prominent station among the sovereigns of Austria. The contrast between monarchies and democratic states is in nothing more striking, than in the degrees and amount of political abilities, which they respectively call into action. Men may dispute, if they will, whether liberty be the fostering parent of the arts, and may continue to raise questions respecting the influence of forms of government on letters; but the turbulent contests, the unsparing and unqualified competition, allowed in popular states, quicken natural talents and furnish every facility and every inducement for their display. At courts the race is not necessarily to the swift; and men are naturally turned aside from the career of the public service, when no scope is furnished them for the full exercise of natural powers and the manly struggle for honors.
