Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.

Book Organ Literature of the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book Organ Literature of the Seventeenth Century written by John R. Shannon and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The seventeenth is the greatest of all centuries for the organ and for its literature. Never before or since has this instrument served as such an important medium of musical composition. Such composers as Frescobaldi, Cabanilles, De Grigny, the Couperins, Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Scheidt, Bruhns, Buxtehude, Froberger, and Pachelbel regarded it as their principal outlet for creative expression. In this study, the author first traces the origins of seventeenth-century styles in the keyboard music of the late Renaissance; he then devotes individual chapters to each of the important geographical styles of seventeenth-century organ music. The book's point of orientation is the manner in which each of these styles develops its own unique vocabulary and set of compositional techniques. The text is illustrated by some two hundred musical examples carefully selected to demonstrate each stylistic development. The volume concludes with a selected and annotated bibliography of readily available performances of the entire repertory." --Dust jacket.
