In no branchhoj surgical therapeutics is the exercise of common-islehgefigfie'd by more satisfactory results than in the treatment of these lesions. A blind reli ance upon therapeutic dogmas and the adoption of routine measures, without due consideration of the mechanical and pathological problems presented, have led to many disasters in this department of surgery. The essays brought together in this little volume represent the Views announced at vari ous times by the author, who has always believed that inde pendent thinking leads to the abandonment of false theories, and aids in the search for truth. Book The Rationale of Operative Fracture Care

Download or read book The Rationale of Operative Fracture Care written by Joseph Schatzker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the publication of the AO book Technique of Internal Fixation of Fractures (Miiller, Allgower and Willenegger, Springer-Verlag, 1965), the authors decided after considerable discussion amongst themselves and other members of the Swiss AO that the next edition would appear in three volumes. In 1969, the first volume was published (the English edition, Manual of Internal Fixation, appeared in 1970). This was a manual of surgical technique which discussed implants and instruments and in which the problems of internal fixation were presented schematically without radio logical illustrations. The second volume was to be a treatise on the biomechanical basis of internal fixation as elucidated by the work done in the laboratory for experi mental surgery in Davos. The third volume was planned as the culminating effort based upon the first two volumes, treating the problems of specific fractures and richly illustrated with clinical and radiological examples. It was also to discuss results of treatment, comparing the results obtained with the AO method with other methods. The second and third volumes were never published. The second edition of the AO Manual appeared in 1977. It dealt in greater detail with the problems discussed in the first edition, although it still lacked clinical exam ples and any discussion of indications for surgery. Like the first edition, it was trans lated into many languages and was well received. Finally, after 22 years, the much discussed and much needed third volume has appeared.

Book Current Practice of Fracture Treatment

Download or read book Current Practice of Fracture Treatment written by P.C. Leung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a presentation of basic principles of fracture fixation and biomechanical principles the book turns to practical problemsolving areas, namely, the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and foot, and spine, and special problems in children. Internal fixation, including intramedullary nailing and the use of external fixation are described. Compound fractures are everyday problems, and the principles of their management and practical solutions deserve separate discussion. The value of microsurgical techniques has been underestimated by orthopaedic experts and the indications, choices, and procedures need to be put into proper perspectives.

This book was released on 2014-09-21 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A focused, narrative history of orthopaedic surgery in the United States follows the field as it shifts from the use of buckles and straps to early surgery, and how orthopaedic surgeons ultimately came to dominate the treatment of fractures. While orthopaedics means 'to raise a child straight' - this book sheds light on the process of professional boundary formation that led to the modern surgical specialty. It will be of interest to orthopaedic surgeons, aspiring medical students, and those looking for a history of medicine that respects the voices of prominent figures while incorporating the multiple frames of influence that shape the past, present and future.
