Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medico-Legal Journal, 1883, Vol. 1 The habitual criminal has in all civilized times attracted to himself considerable amount of disrespectful attention, principally from those who were engaged in the preparation and administration of the law; but of late years the study of this variety of human fraility has been taken up by medical men, alienists, and anthropologists who have used in their inquiries the scientific methods with which they were already accustomed. If criminal anthropology be not a new branch of knowledge, at least it is characterized by a new way of presenting knowledge that is every year attracting more and more attention. There are already two separate reviews entirely devoted to this subject, one in Italian, and the other in French, besides numerous papers appear in periodicals dedicated to insanity or general medicine, and sketches of the requisite shallowness have even appeared in popular magazines. The number of books on this subject which have appeared in different European languages would fill a large book-case. The professors of the new science have held several collective scientific conferences, and have attracted the notice of the general public by the boldness of their claims and the open contempt with which they treat the-time hallowed ways of keeping under malefactors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1883, Vol. 85 One hundred and fourteen years ago, a French medical student who had but recently entered upon the study of his profession, sent to the Academy Of Surgery Of Paris, a proposition, In which he advocated a division of the symphysis pubis in labour in cases of deformed pelvis, and claimed that such a section would admit of the enlargement of the pelvic canal, and the delivery of the foetus. This proposition of Jean Rene Si gault was ridiculed in the Academy, and treated as the wild scheme Of an ignorant youth. Not convinced of his error, Sigault made the plan the sub jcet of a thesis in 1773, and in 1777 made trial of the Operation, as shown in table 1, case 1. The foetus being small, and the pelvis of the rachitic dwarf larger than was admitted, there was no strain upon the sacro-iliac synchondroses, and the child was delivered alive. The woman recovered and was exhibited with her infant, to the annoyance of the Academy of Surgery, and the professional advantage of the Operator, who was pre sented with a medal by the Faculty of Medicine, and with a pension by the government; one Of the latter being also given to the woman. Being very unwisely lauded as a public benefactor on the merits Of one case, and it neither a crucial one, nor in all respects a perfect success. The patient recovered, and the case was for many years the occasion of unjust doubt and criticism in the literature, until finally, thirty years after, the autopsy showed that the operation had been complete. It was Lan genbeck's description of his Operation that led Czerny to extirpate a non-prolapsed uterus through the vagina. It is needless to state that the extirpation of a prolapsed uterus is much easier and in reality an entirely different Operation from that which we are now considering, because not only the fundus uteri but also the broad liga ments and ovaries are usually outside Of the vulva and within easy reach of the ope rator. I advised that one or both of the nerves supplying the affected part, the median and radial, be stretched, and she entered the hospital the 9ih of February, 1882. At a consultation with the surgeons, Drs. Hunt and Morton, it was thought well to try Specific treatment before resorting to operative meas ures, and she was, therefore, put on large doses of the iodide of potassium and given mercurials, with, however, no beneficial results. Hence it was finally resolved to stretch the median nerve; but to await the result of this measure before disturbing the radial.
