Book History of Bilingual Education in the Northern Territory

Download or read book History of Bilingual Education in the Northern Territory written by Brian Clive Devlin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first detailed history of the Bilingual Education Program in the Northern Territory of Australia. This ambitious and innovative program began in 1973 and at different times it operated in English and 19 Aboriginal languages in 29 very remote schools. The book draws together the grassroots perspectives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous practitioners and researchers. Each chapter is based on rich practitioner experience, capturing bottom-up aspirations, achievements and reflections on this innovative, yet largely undocumented language and education program. The volume also makes use of a significant collection of ‘grey literature’ documents to trace the history of the program. An ethnographic approach has been used to integrate practitioner accounts into the contexts of broader social and political forces, education policy decisions and on-the-ground actions. Language in education policy is viewed at multiple, intersecting levels: from the interactions of individuals, communities of practice and bureaucracy, to national and global forces. The book offers valuable insights as it examines in detail the policy settings that helped and hindered bilingual education in the context of minority language rights in Australia and elsewhere.

Book Vocational Education and Training

Download or read book Vocational Education and Training written by Don Zoellner and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first consolidated history of vocational education and training in the Northern Territory. Not only does the story present a chronological account of events, people and institutions, it also offers an explanation of how the system actually works and this has application well beyond the Territory. The mix of historical accounting and operational analysis comes from a unique perspective. It is proposed that the best way to understand the behaviour of the government ministers who have responsibility for vocational training is to compare their decisions and actions with those of wealthy philanthropists.

Download or read book Broken Circles written by Anna Haebich and published by Fremantle Press. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work reveals the dark heart of the history of the Stolen Generations in Australia. It shows that, from the earliest times of European colonization, Aboriginal Australians experienced the trauma of loss and separation, as their children were abducted, enslaved, institutionalized, and culturally remodeled. Providing a moving and comprehensive account of this tragic history, this study covers all Australian colonies, states, and territories. The analysis spans 200 years of white occupation and intervention, from the earliest seizure of Aboriginal children, through their systematic state removal and incarceration, and on to the harsh treatment of families under the assimilation policies of the 1950s and 1960s. The resistance struggle and achievements of Aboriginal people in defending their communities, regaining their rights and mending the broken circles of family life provides a compelling parallel story of determination and courage.

Book Global Directions in Inclusive Education

Download or read book Global Directions in Inclusive Education written by Matthew J. Schuelka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Directions in Inclusive Education pushes the conceptual boundaries of ‘inclusive education’ and explores new ways to research and envision inclusion and diversity in education for all children. This pioneering book problematizes ‘inclusive education’ as a global currency, as another form of deficit-thinking, and as a universal application. The expert team of international contributors argue that much of the field of inclusive education needs a reinvigoration of new ideas, critical introspection, and ways of knowing that can overcome the well-worn deficit paths of inclusive education study, namely: ‘barriers’ to inclusion, teacher attitudes, policy-practice gaps, lack of resources, and lack of teacher training. Seeking diverse ways forward that represent new visions and innovations from around the world, this text features voices and ideas from both early career and established scholars, to enliven debate and promote a more positive and productive dialogue. Global Directions in Inclusive Education is ideal for students, researchers, and scholars of inclusive education; development practitioners seeking new ideas; and practitioners seeking to gain a deeper and more global understanding of inclusive education both in theory and in practice.
