Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logic Political Economy: And Other Papers My Dear Sir, - When I had the pleasure of meeting you at Ch - , for the second time in my life, I was much concerned to remark the general dejection of your manner. I may now add, that I was also much surprised; your cousins visit to me having made it no longer a point of delicacy to suppress that feeling. General report had represented you as in possession of all which enters into the worldly estimate of happiness - great opulence, unclouded reputation, and freedom from unhappy connexions. That you had the priceless blessing of unfluctuating health, I know upon your own authority. And the concurring opinions of your friends, together with my own opportunities for observation, left me no room to doubt that you wanted not the last and mightiest among the sources of happiness - a fortunate constitution of mind, both for moral and intellectual ends. A still briefer abstract of that paper was inserted in the Report of the Meet ing a, and the paper itself was not printed until June 1866 b. Since writing that paper, I have, over and over again, questioned the truth of my own notions, but without ever finding any reason to doubt their substantial correctness. I have therefore thought it needless to delay any longer submitting the theory to the oriti cism of those who are interested in the progress of Political Economy. Book Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Nassau William Senior and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Economy Secondly, The confounding the science Of Political Economy with the Sciences and Arts, to which it is subservient, has seduced Econo mists sometimes to undertake inquiries too vague to lead to any practical results, and sometimes to pursue the legitimate objects of the science by means unfit for their attainment. To their extended view of the objects Of Political Economy is to be attributed the undue importance which many Economists have ascribed to the col lection of facts, and their neglect of the far more important process Of reasoning accurately from the facts before them. We are con stantly told that it is a science of facts and experiment, a science acide ale fails. The practical applications of it, like the practical applications of every other science, without doubt, require the col lection and examination Of facts to an almost indefinite extent. The facts collected as materials for the amendment of the poor-laws, and the opening of the trade to China, fill more than twice as many volumes as could be occupied by all the treatises that have ever been written on Political Economy 5 but the facts on which the general principles Of the science rest may be stated in a very few sentences, and indeed in a very few words. But that the reasoning from these facts, the drawing from them correct conclusions, is a matter of great difficulty, may be inferred from the imperfect state in which the science is now found after it has been so long and so intensely studied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy Under the impression just stated, I joined a public Association existing in London, and with a committee of eight persons commenced an investigation of the state of the science, the result being, that, in the year 1838 I drew up a report, which received the sanction of the committee. The object of this report was confined to shewing the false state in which the science had been placed before the public mind, and was to have been followed by another work, the purport of which was to have been the elucidation of the true nature of the subject. Book Principles of Political Economy with Some of Their Applications to Social Philosophy

Download or read book Principles of Political Economy with Some of Their Applications to Social Philosophy written by John Stuart Mill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy With Some of Their Applications to Social Philosophy: With Special Introd, by Arthur T. Hadley How strong and at the same time how subtle was the in fluence of those current conceptions can perhaps best be seen in the works of men who, like Carlyle or Kingsley, at tempted to take a position hostile to Mill. Underlying the thought of these writers, there is the sound and healthful idea that material wealth ought not to be elevated to the position of an independent entity, dissevered from the happiness of those who are to enjoy it. But it would seem that neither of them really formulated this protest in valid shape. Instead of rejecting Mill's conceptions, they inveighed against his conclusions. Like him, they took their subjects ready made; like him they made their own predicates; but, being possessed of less than his power in logic and patience in study, their predicates were less correct than his. And what is seen in Kingsley or Carlyle is seen also in Lassalle and Marx. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Trinity: A New Science of Political Economy The embittered relationship of the classes is mostly due to the prevalence of false ideas regarding these economic Obligations, the early economists having, in the name Of science, taught a theory that violated not only economic law but logic, and also the law of necessity - better known as commonsense. The greatest Of ethical teachers was also the greatest of social scientists, and by precept and example taught that man's contract obligations were not to be bartered for mere personal interests, no matter how tempting. He was also a working crafts man, and taught a Gospel of Labour - that men should work, and their employers pay them justly, if not benevolently.
