Book A Hideous Monster of the Mind

Download or read book A Hideous Monster of the Mind written by Bruce Dain and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual history of race, one of the most pernicious and enduring ideas in American history, has remained segregated into studies of black or white traditions. Bruce Dain breaks this separatist pattern with an integrated account of the emergence of modern racial consciousness in the United States from the Revolution to the Civil War. A Hideous Monster of the Mind reveals that ideas on race crossed racial boundaries in a process that produced not only well-known theories of biological racism but also countertheories that were early expressions of cultural relativism, cultural pluralism, and latter-day Afrocentrism. From 1800 to 1830 in particular, race took on a new reality as Americans, black and white, reacted to postrevolutionary disillusionment, the events of the Haitian Revolution, the rise of cotton culture, and the entrenchment of slavery. Dain examines not only major white figures like Thomas Jefferson and Samuel Stanhope Smith, but also the first self-consciously "black" African-American writers. These various thinkers transformed late-eighteenth-century European environmentalist "natural history" into race theories that combined culture and biology and set the terms for later controversies over slavery and abolition. In those debates, the ethnology of Samuel George Morton and Josiah Nott intertwined conceptually with important writing by black authors who have been largely forgotten, like Hosea Easton and James McCune Smith. Scientific racism and the idea of races as cultural constructions were thus interrelated aspects of the same effort to explain human differences. In retrieving neglected African-American thinkers, reestablishing the European intellectual background to American racial theory, and demonstrating the deep confusion "race" caused for thinkers black and white, A Hideous Monster of the Mind offers an engaging and enlightening new perspective on modern American racial thought.

Book Dugald Stewart s Empire of the Mind

Download or read book Dugald Stewart s Empire of the Mind written by Charles Bradford Bow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dugald Stewart's Empire of the Mind recasts the cultivation of a democratic intellect in the late Scottish Enlightenment. It comprises an intellectual history of what was at stake in moral education during a transitional period of revolutionary change between 1772 and 1828. Stewart was a child of the Scottish Enlightenment, who inherited the Scottish philosophical tradition of teaching metaphysics as moral philosophy from the tuition of Adam Ferguson and Thomas Reid. But the Scottish Enlightenment intellectual culture of his youth changed in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Stewart sustained the Scottish school of philosophy by transforming how it was taught as professor of moral philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. His elementary system of moral education fostered an empire of the mind in the universal pursuit of happiness. The democratization of Stewart's didactic Enlightenment—the instruction of moral improvement—in a globalizing, interconnected nineteenth-century knowledge economy is examined in this book.

Book New Directions in the Study of African American Recolonization

Download or read book New Directions in the Study of African American Recolonization written by Beverly Tomek and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume closely examines the movement to resettle black Americans in Africa, an effort led by the American Colonization Society during the nineteenth century and a heavily debated part of American history. Some believe it was inspired by antislavery principles, but others think it was a proslavery reaction against the presence of free Black people in society. Moving beyond this simplistic debate, contributors link the movement to other historical developments of the time, revealing a complex web of different schemes, ideologies, and activities behind the relocation of African Americans to Liberia. They explain what colonization, emigration, immigration, abolition, and emancipation meant within nuanced nineteenth-century contexts, looking through many lenses to more accurately reflect the past. Book Exchange of Ideas

Download or read book Exchange of Ideas written by Adam R. Nelson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this first volume of a planned trilogy that will recast the history of the university in a fresh and surprising light, Adam R. Nelson aims to show how knowledge itself was commodified, starting in the late eighteenth century. Nelson follows the market transformation in the age of revolutions to show how American colleges were drawn into transatlantic commercial relations. Fusing the history of higher education with the history of capitalism, Nelson opens up an array of questions: How do we distinguish between knowledge and education as goods? Are they public or private? What determines their prices? In the most fundamental sense, what is the optimal system of higher education in a capitalist democracy? The answers have jarring relevance today"--

Book excerpt: A prehistory of today's humanities, from ancient Greece to the early twentieth century Many today do not recognize the word, but "philology" was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only the study of Greek and Roman literature and the Bible but also all other studies of language and literature, as well as history, culture, art, and more. In short, philology was the queen of the human sciences. How did it become little more than an archaic word? In Philology, the first history of Western humanistic learning as a connected whole ever published in English, James Turner tells the fascinating, forgotten story of how the study of languages and texts led to the modern humanities and the modern university. The humanities today face a crisis of relevance, if not of meaning and purpose. Understanding their common origins—and what they still share—has never been more urgent.
