This book was released on 2012-06-06 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JAK tyrosine kinases and STAT transcription factors constitute a signaling pathway, which is activated by cytokines. By activating gene transcription it regulates essential biological responses to environmental cues. The Jak-Stat pathway is involved in the regulation of cell development, differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis. Improper function may contribute to hematopoietic malignancies and cancer. This book provides comprehensive insights into the latest basic and clinical developments in the field. The first part reviews recent findings and new technologies pertaining to basics of Jak-Stat function. The second part describes the evolution of Jak-Stat signaling and the role of the pathway in invertebrate organisms. The third part focuses on Jak-Stat signaling in hematopoietic cells under both physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Finally, chapters in the fourth section describe the relationship of Jak-Stat signaling to various states of disease, particularly infection, leukemias and solid cancers. The book is intended for all scientists in molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology dealing with biomedical issues.

Book JAK STAT Signaling in Diseases

Download or read book JAK STAT Signaling in Diseases written by Ritobrata Goswami and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JAK-STAT pathway is one of the few signal transduction pathways that transduce signals involved in multiple homeostatic biological processes including cell differentiation and proliferation, cell death, hematopoiesis and immune responses. JAK-STAT is an elegant pathway that is relatively simple and evolutionary conserved as gene expression is regulated by external parameters. Activated by growth factors or cytokines, this signal transduction cascade regulates the transcription of genes at the nucleus. Mutations and polymorphisms in JAK-STAT pathway are associated with inflammatory diseases and cancers that could impede regular homeostasis. Features: Details activation and microRNA-mediated regulation of JAK-STAT pathway Provides exclusive information about the association of the pathway in various diseases including allergic inflammation, neuro-inflammatory disorder, atopic dermatitis hematopoietic malignancies, cardiovascular disorder, renal disorder, immunodeficiency, liver fibrosis, diabetes and obesity that affect individuals across the globe Clinical relevance of the signaling cascade has been discussed in context of novel class of therapeutics that targets this pathway. An overview of JAK-STAT signaling pathway and the structure-function relationship of different domains of the cascade are discussed. This book provides detailed information on various diseases that are associated with JAK-STAT pathway. It will act as a very good reference book for basic science researchers, academicians, industry professionals involved in translational research leading to product development. This book will excite future professionals towards better understanding of the regulation of this pathway, its association with other signaling cascades to design novel therapeutics.

Book Colitis Associated Cancer

Download or read book Colitis Associated Cancer written by Masato Kusunoki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the number of patients with colitis-associated cancer (CAC) is on the increase, the purpose of this book is to review the latest topics concerning management of the disease. In recent years, the diagnostic power of endoscopy and molecular pathology has also grown tremendously, as a result of which they now have a far greater influence on the treatment of CAC. At the moment, appropriate monitoring programs for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease remain uncertain. At the same time, the latest findings on DNA methylation and microRNAs hold the promise of making revolutionary changes in these areas. Moreover, recent drug advances in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases have changed surgical indications. On the other hand, the indication of mucosectomy on colorectal cancer in ulcerative colitis and prophylactic abdominoperineal resection for Crohn’s disease remain controversial. This book provides the latest information on the remaining issues of CAC from the point of view of expert surgeons.

Book Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology

Download or read book Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology written by Motonari Kondo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1988, my developmental biology professor announced to the class that hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) had finally been purified. Somehow, I never forgot the professor’s words. When I started working in Dr. Irv Weissman’s labo- tory at Stanford as a postdoctoral fellow, I realized that the findings mentioned by the professor were from Weissman’s laboratory and had been published in a 1988 edition of the journal Science. It has been over 20 years since the publication of that seminal paper, and since then tremendous advances in understanding the biology and maturation of HSCs, namely the process of hematopoiesis, which includes lymphocyte development, have been made. These discoveries were made possible in part by advancements in technology. For example, recent availability of user friendly fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) machines and monoclonal an- bodies with a variety of fluorescent labels has allowed more scientists to sort and analyze rare populations in the bone marrow, such as HSCs. All classes of hematopoietic cells are derived from HSCs. Stem cell biology draws enormous attention not only from scientists, but also from ordinary people because of the tremendous potential for development of new therapeutic application to diseases that currently lack any type of effective therapy. Thus, this type of “regenerative medicine” is a relatively new and attractive field in both basic science and clinical medicine.

Book Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders

Download or read book Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders written by Sa A. Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms that initially present as peripheral blood abnormalities, with either cytopenias or elevated peripheral blood counts, as well as non-neoplastic conditions that may raise concern for a hematologic malignancy. The scope of the book includes myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), mixed myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN), as well as lymphomas and lymphoid leukemias that typically present initially with peripheral blood abnormalities. Book Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Download or read book Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells written by Mitchell Khan and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Chapter 1, the COVID-19 pandemic and the damage mechanisms on the cellular level which can be ameliorated with the cellular therapies is thoroughly evaluated. Previous and ongoing stem cell clinical trial data from diseases with similar symptoms is gathered. All this accumulated data and current clinical trial results indicate that the cellular therapies could be the most effective treatment option for COVID-19 patients to ameliorate the damaged tissues and save lives. In Chapter 2, the authors examine activated mesenchymal stem cells for stroke repair. Stem Cell treatment has shown recovery in animal models of stroke, indicating an improved regenerative and repair potential. Though stem cells are still being used in clinical trials, there is no evidence that they enhance recovery in ischemic stroke patients. Nevertheless, the multipotent mesenchymal stem has widely been explored for stroke recovery. An'Activated MSC' as a therapeutic alternative to tackling ischemic stroke is proposed, thereby the activation of MSCs by cytokines, growth factors, hypoxia, pharmacological drugs, etc., could be a novel approach to improving stroke patients' responses to receiving MSCs. In Chapter 3, the potential benefits of in vitro culture of therapeutic stem cells in the presence of HB along with the ketogenic diet, whereby higher physiological concentrations of ketone bodies can be achieved in vivo, as an adjuvant to stem cell transplantation is assessed"--
