Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infinite Affection Spirit Christlike, and will no doubt make a still wider appeal through the present work, which is in a very real sense a preacher's confession of faith - liv ing words addressed to living men and women. In an age when there is much religious uncertainty, when Old creeds are seen to stand in urgent need of revision in the light of new knowledge - an age of manifold bewilderment and perplexity-mwe need the preacher who strikes the positive note with a convie tion which, under all our modern changes, has only deepened and grown stronger; the' preacher who is thoroughly equipped with the methods and results of the scholarship Of today, and who, just because that equipment is thorough, is as constructive as he is unfettered, as reverent as he is sane, as profoundly assured of the essential truth Of Christianity as he is ready to acknowledge with the utmost frankness what science, criticism and philosophy have taught us in these latter days. Book Dialogue on the Infinity of Love

Download or read book Dialogue on the Infinity of Love written by Tullia d'Aragona and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-03-15 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated as a courtesan and poet, and as a woman of great intelligence and wit, Tullia d'Aragona (1510–56) entered the debate about the morality of love that engaged the best and most famous male intellects of sixteenth-century Italy. First published in Venice in 1547, but never before published in English, Dialogue on the Infinity of Love casts a woman rather than a man as the main disputant on the ethics of love. Sexually liberated and financially independent, Tullia d'Aragona dared to argue that the only moral form of love between woman and man is one that recognizes both the sensual and the spiritual needs of humankind. Declaring sexual drives to be fundamentally irrepressible and blameless, she challenged the Platonic and religious orthodoxy of her time, which condemned all forms of sensual experience, denied the rationality of women, and relegated femininity to the realm of physicality and sin. Human beings, she argued, consist of body and soul, sense and intellect, and honorable love must be based on this real nature. By exposing the intrinsic misogyny of prevailing theories of love, Aragona vindicates all women, proposing a morality of love that restores them to intellectual and sexual parity with men. Through Aragona's sharp reasoning, her sense of irony and humor, and her renowned linguistic skill, a rare picture unfolds of an intelligent and thoughtful woman fighting sixteenth-century stereotypes of women and sexuality.

Book The Real Metaphysical Club

Download or read book The Real Metaphysical Club written by Frank X. Ryan and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A full account of the Metaphysical Club, featuring the members’ philosophical writings and four critical essays. The Metaphysical Club, a gathering of intellectuals in the 1870s, is widely recognized as the crucible where pragmatism, America’s distinctively original philosophy, was refined and proclaimed. Louis Menand’s bestseller about the group was a dramatic publishing success. However, only three actual members—Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Charles S. Peirce, and William James—appear in the book, alongside other thinkers who were never in the Club. The Real Metaphysical Club tells the full story of how this influential group shifted the course of philosophy in America. In addition to pioneering pragmatism, the group explored radical empiricism and idealism, and formulated personalism and process philosophy, equally important developments. This volume contains the important writings dating from 1870 to 1885 by the real members of the Metaphysical Club. The first section centers on pragmatism and science; the second part collects writings of the lawyers; and the third part covers idealist and personalist philosophers. Many of these writings have never been reprinted before, and nothing like this impressive collection has ever been attempted. A general introduction provides a narrative history, and the editors’ three introductions to the volume’s sections vividly bring to life the intense meetings, sustained debates, and pioneering thought of the Metaphysical Club. “The Real Metaphysical Club includes some very important thinkers that don’t always make it into anthologies of American philosophy. The period is also important. 1870 to 1885 is critical to the development of classical American philosophy. It precedes it and sets its direction. The book accomplishes its goal of giving the reader a sense of the period by arranging the works in a very interesting way. The readings and introduction are very readable and would be helpful to both graduate and undergraduate students as well as general readers interested in American Thought.” — James M. McLachlan, Western Carolina University
