Book excerpt: Early childhood education is tasked with preparing children for kindergarten by acquiring skills in all areas of development. One area that many preschool teachers have reported they do not feel as comfortable addressing is supporting children who are demonstrating challenging behaviors. As a result, preschools may suspend or expel their children who exhibit these challenges. The impact of this has been proven to be detrimental for not only the child’s current education, but their future education as well. This mixed-methods study aimed to determine if preschool teachers from inclusive community-based preschools were able to implement behavior strategies they learned during a two-hour pre-recorded training session given by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Findings of this study showed that the majority of the preschool teachers felt as if they were able to implement the learned strategies in their classroom; however, the results were not as favorable when asked if the teachers felt as if there was a reduction of challenging behaviors in their classroom.

Book excerpt: The concept of "funds of knowledge" is based on a simple premise: people are competent and have knowledge, and their life experiences have given them that knowledge. The claim in this book is that first-hand research experiences with families allow one to document this competence and knowledge, and that such engagement provides many possibilities for positive pedagogical actions. Drawing from both Vygotskian and neo-sociocultural perspectives in designing a methodology that views the everyday practices of language and action as constructing knowledge, the funds of knowledge approach facilitates a systematic and powerful way to represent communities in terms of the resources they possess and how to harness them for classroom teaching. This book accomplishes three objectives: It gives readers the basic methodology and techniques followed in the contributors' funds of knowledge research; it extends the boundaries of what these researchers have done; and it explores the applications to classroom practice that can result from teachers knowing the communities in which they work. In a time when national educational discourses focus on system reform and wholesale replicability across school sites, this book offers a counter-perspective stating that instruction must be linked to students' lives, and that details of effective pedagogy should be linked to local histories and community contexts. This approach should not be confused with parent participation programs, although that is often a fortuitous consequence of the work described. It is also not an attempt to teach parents "how to do school" although that could certainly be an outcome if the parents so desired. Instead, the funds of knowledge approach attempts to accomplish something that may be even more challenging: to alter the perceptions of working-class or poor communities by viewing their households primarily in terms of their strengths and resources, their defining pedagogical characteristics. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore whether hiring teachers with higher education requirements can support in creating high-quality preschool programs. This quantitative study is to determine the necessity of preschool teachers having higher education, and how this higher education might affect preschool programs quality standards. The problem is that there are different policies for private preschools compared to subsidized preschools when it comes to their teacher education expectations. This differentiation of education expectations could mean that preschool programs may not be consistent in having highly educated teachers. Having highly educated teachers working in preschool programs has been shown to better support preschool students in obtaining developmentally appropriate learning opportunities through the curriculum and environment. Data for this study is collected from publicly available information from Placer County Office of Education concerning the quality scores of different preschool programs. These quality scores are then used to compare the educational levels of the teachers working in these programs. A correlation test is run using the data retrieved. Research findings and conclusions specific to strict limitations of this study determine there is no statistically significant impact on teachers having higher education and creating high-quality preschool programs. Practice and policy implications for implementation include paying teachers a higher wage, ongoing professional development, more consistency in teacher educational expectations, and more management involvement in program support.

First, what are the attitudes of early childhood professionals toward advantages and disadvantages of inclusive classrooms and how their attitudes may differ depending on staff position? Second, what are the major obstacles identified by early childhood professionals to inclusive programming and how they correlate with the child's degree of disability? It was predicted that infant and toddler teachers would demonstrate more positive attitudes toward the advantages of inclusive classrooms than directors or preschool teachers. It was also predicted that the major obstacles to inclusive programming identified by early childhood professionals would correlate with the child's degree of disability. The limitations foreseen were that the study collected data only during a specified time from a sample group in a specific geographical area that was selected for convenience.--P. 2.
