Book 19th Century Love Affair of Joseph Smith Emma Hale

Download or read book 19th Century Love Affair of Joseph Smith Emma Hale written by Annette Bolton and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th Century Love Affair of Joseph Smith and Emma Hale was born out of the author's study of LDS polygamy, polyandry, and child marriage within the early days of the LDS Church. The author's grandfather was a polygamist and could, first-hand, see the strain on the last wife of her grandfather. Grandma Cleo worked and cooked for 45 children, during family gatherings. I never saw her tire, but I was always sorry for her. I tried to stay out of the way and not get into trouble, so I minded my business, as was the discipline at that time. My father did not want anything to do with polygamy, so our immediate family was spared the pain of that God-forsaken lifestyle.

Book A New Orleans Voudou Priestess

Download or read book A New Orleans Voudou Priestess written by Carolyn Morrow Long and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2007-10-07 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century New Orleans, A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau disentangles the complex threads of the legend surrounding the famous Voudou priestess. According to mysterious, oft-told tales, Laveau was an extraordinary celebrity whose sorcery-fueled influence extended widely from slaves to upper-class whites. Some accounts claim that she led the "orgiastic" Voudou dances in Congo Square and on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, kept a gigantic snake named Zombi, and was the proprietress of an infamous house of assignation. Though legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, she also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. The true story of Marie Laveau, though considerably less flamboyant than the legend, is equally compelling. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Marie Laveau's African and European ancestors became intertwined. Changes in New Orleans engendered by French and Spanish rule, the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow segregation affected seven generations of Laveau's family, from enslaved great-grandparents of pure African blood to great-grandchildren who were legally classified as white. Simultaneously, Long examines the evolution of New Orleans Voudou, which until recently has been ignored by scholars.

Book Hoodoo for Everyone

Download or read book Hoodoo for Everyone written by Sherry Shone and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beginner’s guide to an inclusive Hoodoo practice--history, spellwork, folklore, and herbs Hoodoo is a folklore tradition that was created by and for enslaved African Americans in the southern United States. And before there were honey jars, red brick dust, and everything else you may associate with Hoodoo, there was the need to be free. This is not the #kitchenwitch Hoodoo you’ve seen on social: it’s magic for those who seek liberation and healing, for those who have been hurt, misunderstood, or cast aside. This is Hoodoo, updated: history, foundations, spellwork, and spiritual guidance made accessible to everyone, inclusive of all backgrounds and genders. Written with three guiding Hoodoo tenets--Intention, Faith, and Direction--in mind, Hoodoo for Everyone offers everything you need to know about the practice: rituals, conjure, rootwork, divination, herbs, plants, and ancestor work. Shone’s modern Hoodoo also goes in-depth into discussions of gender, religion, and cultural appropriation. She answers the questions: • Is Hoodoo the same as Voodoo, Lucumi, or Santeria? • How do I connect to an ancestor if I don’t know my family’s history? • Is Hoodoo accessible to queer folks? • Can I practice Hoodoo even if I’m agnostic or Christian? • How can I practice Hoodoo respectfully and with sensitivity? With spells and verses organized by topic and a list of spices, herbs, and spellwork objects, Hoodoo for Everyone is for all readers called to Hoodoo, new and experienced alike. For anyone seeking a natural spiritual practice, a connection to their history, or a deeper connection to non-judgmental life energy, Shone offers a comprehensive guide to manifesting deliverance through Hoodoo magic.

Book The Princess and the Prophet

Download or read book The Princess and the Prophet written by Jacob S. Dorman and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The just-discovered story of how two enigmatic circus performers and the cultural ferment of the Gilded Age sparked the Black Muslim movement in America Delving into new archives and uncovering fascinating biographical narratives, secret rituals, and hidden identities, historian Jacob Dorman explains why thousands of Americans were enthralled by the Islamic Orient, and why some came to see Islam as a global antiracist movement uniquely suited to people of African descent in an era of European imperialism, Jim Crow segregation, and officially sanctioned racism. The Princess and the Prophet tells the story of the Black Broadway performer who, among the world of Arabian acrobats and equestrians, Muslim fakirs, and Wild West shows, discovered in Islam a greater measure of freedom and dignity, and a rebuttal to the racism and parochialism of white America. Overturning the received wisdom that the prophet was born on the East Coast, Dorman has discovered that Noble Drew Ali was born Walter Brister in Kentucky. With the help of his wife, a former lion tamer and “Hindoo” magician herself, Brister renamed himself Prophet Noble Drew Ali and founded the predecessor of the Nation of Islam, the Moorish Science Temple of America, in the 1920s. With an array of profitable businesses, the “Moors” built a nationwide following of thousands of dues-paying members, swung Chicago elections, and embedded themselves in Chicago’s dominant Republican political machine at the height of Prohibition racketeering, only to see their sect descend into infighting in 1929 that likely claimed the prophet’s life. This fascinating untold story reveals that cultures grow as much from imagination as inheritance, and that breaking down the artificial silos around various racial and religious cultures helps to understand not only America’s hidden past but also its polycultural present.

Book We Pursue Our Magic

Download or read book We Pursue Our Magic written by Marina Magloire and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the collected archives of distinguished twentieth-century Black woman writers such as Lucille Clifton, Audre Lorde, Toni Cade Bambara, Lorraine Hansberry, and others, Marina Magloire traces a new history of Black feminist thought in relation to Afro-diasporic religion. Beginning in the 1930s with the pathbreaking ethnographic work of Katherine Dunham and Zora Neale Hurston in Haiti and ending with the present-day popularity of Afro-diasporic spiritual practices among Black women, she offers an alternative genealogy of Black feminism, characterized by its desire to reconnect with ancestrally centered religions like Vodou. Magloire reveals the tension, discomfort, and doubt at the heart of each woman's efforts to connect with ancestral spiritual practices. These revered writers are often regarded as unchanging monuments to Black womanhood, but Magloire argues that their feminism is rooted less in self-empowerment than in a fluid pursuit of community despite the inevitable conflicts wrought by racial capitalism. The subjects of this book all model a nuanced Black feminist praxis grounded in the difficult work of community building between Black women across barriers of class, culture, and time.
