Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Wisconsin: From Prehistoric to Present Periods From meteoric dust which is constantly falling, together with the occasional large masses which fall bodily to the earth, we are informed of the general character of the heavenly bodies. Among all of these elements which have been examined, none has been found Which does not exist in the earth. Laws OF rotation. - Laplace, the celebrated mathematician who originated the nebular hypothesis, accounted for the rotation of the planets in this wise: If a perfect sphere, absolutely uniform in structure and density throughout, were stationary, the radiation of heat would cause the body to contract; then, unless shrinkage were uniform, which is highly improbable, the mass would, with the slightest inequality, cause a rotation in some direction. Rotation once started, further con traction would, according to well-established physical principles, cause the rotating to become more and more rapid, as the cooling and shrinking progressed. Again, if the sphere were a perfect equilibrium, the attract ive forces would collect masses, which would disturb its equilibrium, and rotation thus become inaugurated. In other words, rotation is the necessary result of concentration of matter under the varied conditions that characterize the first stages of our universe. Book excerpt: Although the years from 1873-1893 lacked the well known, dramatic events of the periods before and after, this period presented a major transformation in Wisconsin's economy. The third volume in the History of Wisconsin series presents a balanced, comprehensive, and witty account of these two decades of dynamic growth and change in Wisconsin society, business, and industry. Concentrating on three major areas: the economy, communities, and politics and government, this volume in the History of Wisconsin series adds substantially to our knowledge and understanding of this crucial, but generally little-understood, period.

Download or read book President by Massacre written by Barbara Alice Mann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President by Massacre pulls back the curtain of "expansionism," revealing how Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, and Zachary Taylor massacred Indians to "open" land to slavery and oligarchic fortunes. President by Massacre examines the way in which presidential hopefuls through the first half of the nineteenth century parlayed militarily mounted land grabs into "Indian-hating" political capital to attain the highest office in the United States. The text zeroes in on three eras of U.S. "expansionism" as it led to the massacre of Indians to "open" land to African slavery while luring lower European classes into racism's promise to raise "white" above "red" and "black." This book inquires deeply into the existence of the affected Muskogee ("Creek"), Shawnee, Sauk, Meskwaki ("Fox"), and Seminole, before and after invasion, showing what it meant to them to have been so displaced and to have lost a large percentage of their members in the process. It additionally addresses land seizures from these and the Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa, Black Hawk, and Osceola tribes. President by Massacre is written for undergraduate and graduate readers who are interested in the Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands, U.S. slavery, and the settler politics of U.S. expansionism.
