Download or read book The Trial and Death of Jesus Christ written by James Stalker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trial and Death of Jesus Christ: A Devotional History of Our Lord's Passion Every since I wrote, in a contracted form, The Life of Jesus Christ, the desire has slumbered in my mind to describe on a much more extended scale the closing passages of the Saviour's earthly history; and, although renewed study has deepened my sense of the impossibility of doing these scenes full justice, yet the subject has never ceased to attract me, as being beyond all others impressive and remunerative. The limits of our Lord's Passion are somewhat indeterminate. Krummacher begins with the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Tauler with the Feet-washing before the Last Supper, and Rambach with Gethsemane; most end with the Death and Burial; but Grimm, a Roman Catholic, the latest writer on the subject, means to extend his Leidensgeschichte to the end of the Forty Days. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ I said in the introduction to my second volume, that of the three periods in the ministry of Jesus Christ the first is shrouded in Obscurity, the second is better known, the third is thoroughly well known and stands in full light. This is the period which I have now to pass in review. Everything in it is clear, evident, luminous, and critics are in general accord as to the facts related in the Gospels. But this can be said only in a. General way. \vhen we come to details we find variations in the authentic documents. It suffices to glance over a synopsis giving a comparative text of the Gospels to be convinced of this. They swarm with petty contradictions. Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ written by Johann Peter Lange and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels It had been determined in the counsel of God that an honourable burial should be prepared for the deceased Prince of men; and in order to realize this decree, the motives and feelings which actuated the Jews were made to co-operate in the most remarkable manner with the inmost wishes of believers. The Jews could not but feel an urgent desire to have the bodies of the crucified taken down and buried before evening, at which time the Sabbath commenced. It was against the law, in its general terms, to let bodies remain all night upon the tree (Deut. xxi. 22, 23); and in this case there was also the special consideration, that the next day was the Sabbath, and that Sabbath-day was a high day (John xix. 31). They could not bear the thought that the bodies should remain hanging upon the cross during the greatest day of the feast. Book The Argument for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Argument for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Thomas Harvey Skinner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Argument for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Now, according to the Scriptures, this enigmatical life and voluntary death of Christ are of the very essence of Christianity; and yet peculiar and marvellous as were that life and that death, had the career of Christ closed with his burial, there could have been no intelligible Old Testament, no New Testament, no Church, no Christendom, no hope of heaven, no salvation for man. 1 His name would speedily have perished from among men. A dead Christ could not make a living religion. A crucified Christ, mouldering in the tomb, never could have moved and shaken to its centre and revolutionised the Roman Empire, and on the ruins of its idolatry and pagan civilisation built up his toric Christendom. A dead Christ could awaken neither faith, nor hope, nor zeal, nor sacrifice in his cause. Nothing but disi appointment, dismay, and despair on the part of his friends would follow his final destruction. His death would be a death blow to any religion he might have proclaimed in his life. Book The Life of Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ written by August Neander and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ: In Its Historical Connexion and Historical Development The present age may be considered an epoch of transition in the development of the kingdom of God; and, as such, it is full of signs. Among the most striking of them is a greater zeal for the spread of the Gospel and the Bible through all nations, combining many and various agencies for that work; as well as a closer union among all earnest Christians, seekers of salvation and truth, of all lands, however widely separated-a new Catholic Church, which, amid all the diversity of outward ecclesiastica! forms, is preparing that unity of the spirit which has Christ for its foundation. Especially is it matter of rejoicing to see a growing spirit of fraternal union between the Christians of the Old World and those of the New; a land in which Christianity (the destined leaven for all the elements of humanity, how various soever) develops its activities under secular relations so entirely novel. It was, therefore, very gratifying to me to learn that Professors M'Clintock and Blumenthal had determined to put this volume, the fruit of my earnest inquiries, before the transatlantic Christian public in an English dress. To sec a wider sphere of influence opened for views which we ourselves (amid manifold struggles, yet guided, we trust, bv the Divine Spirit) have recognized as true, and which, in our opinion, are lilted to make a way right on through the warring contradictions of error, cannot be otherwise than grateful to us. For truth is designed for all men: he who serves the truth works and strives for all men. The Lord has given to each his own charisma, and with it each must work for all. What is true and good, then, is no man's own; it comes from the Father of Lights, the Giver of every good gift, who lends it to us to he used for all. And what is true, must prove itself such by bearing the test of the general Christian consciousness. But the pleasure with which I write these words is not unmingled with anxiety.
