Book excerpt: I have always been a bit outspoken; I like to think of myself as just being direct. I must justifiably state that my actions were, in part, due to my distaste for unfair treatment of people and hypocrisy. I moved to a small town in Georgia from a city up north, and the culture shock in itself was dramatic. For instance, upon speaking out at a board of education meeting about the lack of student academic achievement, I discovered parents were in an uproar over cheerleading. Huh! This is in a town where sports often meant more than a good education; that is, of course, until the season is over. But I digress. After this meeting, one of the assistant superintendents approached me and asked if I would consider representing the district at a state meeting and provide a parents perspective. Of course, I said yes. This is the point in which God opens the door; I rode to the meeting with a faculty member, and during the two-hour drive, we both became aware that my new landlord was her father. Well, that gave us a lot to talk about, and ultimately, she became my manager in a position where I would be required to help students remain in school and graduate. This was familiar and fulfilling ground for me because I had just closed my NJ business, a business in which I worked with at-risk students. I must love young people because my salary was slashed by 65 percent, but I saw it as a door to a new career. Honestly, I needed an income since I no longer had my business, and helping others was something I enjoyed doing. I was in the midst of obtaining my BS degree in Psychology, and this position would give me another level of hands-on experience so that I could move into individual counseling once I completed school with my masters degree.

Download or read book The Effects of the Graduation Coach Initiative on the High School Graduation Rates in the State of Georgia written by Emmett G. Shaffer and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The High School Graduation Coach Initiative was championed by Governor Sonny Perdue during the 2006 legislative session. This initiative specifies that all school districts will receive one high school graduation coach for each high school within the school district if the school district agrees to enter into a contract which guarantees that the graduation coach will only engage in work which increases the graduation rate. Unlike traditional school counselors and social workers, the graduation coach focuses solely on increasing the graduation rates"--Leaves 4-5. In addition to evaluating the effectiveness of this initiative, this study determined if the level of certification the graduation coach holds increases graduation rates.

Book The Relationship Between Graduation Coaches Academic Achievement and Graduation Rate in Georgia

Download or read book The Relationship Between Graduation Coaches Academic Achievement and Graduation Rate in Georgia written by Christopher Richard Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005-2006, Governor Perdue of Georgia began the Graduation Coach Initiative to increase student achievement by identifying at-risk students early and providing intervention strategies that would lead to academic success and graduation. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between graduation coaches, academic achievement, and graduation rate in Georgia. The research design used to determine the relationship between graduation coaches, academic achievement, and graduation rate was a quantitative, causal comparative study. Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests did not substantiate a significant relationship between graduation coaches, academic achievement, and graduation rate. Improvements in test score pass rates and graduation rate occurred at statistically similar rates before and after the implementation of the Graduation Coach Initiative except on two occasions. Graduation rates improved at a statistically significant higher rate after the utilization of graduation coaches in urban schools and before the utilization of graduation coaches in suburban schools.

Book The Effects of the Graduation Coach on the Attendance and Math and Reading Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Scores of At Risk Students in a North Georgia Middle School

Download or read book The Effects of the Graduation Coach on the Attendance and Math and Reading Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Scores of At Risk Students in a North Georgia Middle School written by Melissa Clark Trevillian and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until graduation coaches were added to all Georgia high schools for the 2006-2007 school year, the state of Georgia had one of the lowest graduation rates in the United States. After the high school graduation coaches were found to be successful in decreasing the dropout rate, coaches were added at the middle school level beginning in the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the middle school graduation coach on the attendance and the math and reading CRCT scores of the at-risk student. A control group of at-risk students that did not receive treatment was compared to the experimental group that received treatment from the middle school graduation coach during the 2008-2009 school year. The pretest and posttest math and reading CRCT scores and attendance were analyzed using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine if the middle school graduation coach had a significant effect on the at-risk students. The hypotheses that the graduation coach would have an effect on the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade at-risk students' attendance and math and reading CRCT scores were rejected because the ANCOVA found that any significant increases or decreases were not due to the effect of the middle school graduation coach. Analysis of gender was completed using a paired t-test and found significant increases in the math and reading CRCT scores of males in the experimental group and the reading CRCT scores of females in the control group.

Book An Examination of the Association Between the Graduation Coach Program and Georgia s Graduation Rate

Download or read book An Examination of the Association Between the Graduation Coach Program and Georgia s Graduation Rate written by Wardell C. Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: As result of the dropout problem in the United States and in Georgia, many school systems around the nation have placed much emphasis on reducing the incidents of students dropping out of high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the graduation coach program and Georgia's graduation rate of over a 7 year period of time, 2004-2010. The research sought to determine if differences existed between graduation rates pre the induction of the graduation coach programs and post the induction of the graduation coach program when controlling for variables such as, school locale, free and reduced lunch percentages, science achievement data and race and ethnicity percentages. I used quantitative design to gather descriptive statistics and to test differences in means scores pre and post the induction of the graduation coach program. The participants were 343 public high schools in the state of Georgia with pre coach program graduation rates and post coach program graduation rates. The spreadsheet was developed so that pre graduation coach program data and post graduation coach data was easily distinguishable. The data set contained statistical information on all 343 schools with pre and post graduation rate data. The results of this study indicate that graduation rates were statistically significant higher after the induction of the graduation coach program when compared to the period prior to the induction of the graduation coach program. In fact, this advantage persisted across city high schools, rural high schools, suburban high schools, town high schools, metropolitan Atlanta high schools and high schools outside of metropolitan Atlanta. However, when looking at Atlanta Public Schools, Dekalb County Schools and Clayton County Schools, no significant difference was found for Atlanta Public Schools.

Book The Impact of Graduation Coaches Relationship Building Strategies on Student Dispositions and Self efficacy

Download or read book The Impact of Graduation Coaches Relationship Building Strategies on Student Dispositions and Self efficacy written by Rickey G. Strickland and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative phenomenological research was designed to explore the relationships established by graduation coaches and the students they serve. The research that was conducted in two upstate South Carolina schools explored the perceptions and experiences of both the graduation coaches and the students who participated in the study. The study was conducted using a phenomenological research design to capture the essence of each participant’s experiences and perceptions. Data were collected utilizing surveys, interviews, and field observations. The researcher did not participate in the interaction between the graduation coaches and their students. The results of the data collection revealed themes and supporting areas that provided insight into the experiences and perceptions of each participant resulting in a relationship that developed over time between the graduation coach and the students. Key themes that emerged were frequency of contact, quality of the relationship, and self-efficacy. These themes along with the supporting areas demonstrated that both the graduation coaches and students in the study perceived a positive relationship with each other with beneficial outcomes for the students.

Book excerpt: Did you know that we're battling an epidemic . . . ? Almost one-third of all high-school students fail to graduate with their class; among minorities, the dropout rate is almost 50 percent. Dropouts are more likely than their peers to be unemployed, live in poverty, have poor health, depend upon social services, and go to jail. The combined loss of income and revenue to the American economy from a single year's dropouts is about $192 billion. From The Silent Epidemic (Bridgeland, Dilulio, and Morrison, 2006) But there is a solution to the dropout crisis that is proven, effective, replicable, and sustainable! Communities In Schools (CIS) reaches more than one million at-risk students and their families annually in more than 3,000 American schools. These kids would fall far below the national average for every measure of student success. Yet 98 percent of CIS-tracked students stayed in school. Why? What makes the difference? The Last Dropout offers nine key principles that Communities In Schools has tested over three decades. Interwoven are the dramatic life stories of CIS founder Bill Milliken and his colleagues, a journey that began in the turbulent 1960s as youth workers with a spiritual mission struggled to turn around the lives of dropouts and addicts. It traces the evolution of the CIS movement from a handful of groundbreaking ''street academies'' to a national network of hundreds of local affiliates. The Last Dropout also features stories about how CIS leaders have adopted these principles in their own communities, with stunning results!

Book Understanding Poverty in the Classroom

Download or read book Understanding Poverty in the Classroom written by Beth Lindsay Templeton and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2011-05-16 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People who live in poverty consider life in different ways than those who have adequate basic resources. Many educators tend to see the world through their middle-class worldview. Because of this, they do not understand these significant and often rational differences. They may misinterpret behavior they see and ascribe negative connotations to how their students are reacting. Their assumptions can affect the quality of both the teaching and the learning that happens. Most teachers have real passion for educating their students but their experiences limit how they relate to the challenges some of their students face daily. Understanding Poverty in the Classroom: * Identifies perceptual differences * Teaches strategies to address the special needs of children from poverty * Encourages teachers to learn about the neighborhoods where their students live and what to look for in those areas * Confronts myths about poverty and reinforces learning with specific illustrations This resource is interactive with exercises that increase the reader's learning and provides specific tools to improve the educational process for teachers, students, and parents.
