Book The Public School System of Gary Ind Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Public School System of Gary Ind Classic Reprint written by William Paxton Burris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School System of Gary, Ind In this way the opportunity of the school to find employment for older pupils, in the industrial life of'the community is increased prac tically fourfold. Instead of such pupils being thrown upon the market at one time for one portion Of the year, a fourth Of them would be on the market all of the time. Thus, in connection with vocational departments, four pupils can take the place Of one regular continuous apprentice in shop or Office. The 36 weeks of fundamental experience in handling certain machines, for example, is to be rounded out by 12 weeks Of actual operation of machines in the industrial shops. This annual alternation Of schoolroom activities and practical experience would make school laboratories Of the shops, with an enormous saving in cost Of equipment. Not only this, but the capacity Of the school plant, with this four-quarter organization, is thereby increased, with corresponding reduction in the per capita cost and added advantages for children. AS my language indicates, the above form of organization is an ideal toward which they are rapidly approaching. In a school sys tem which is in the making, one can not describe and explain the actual without reference to that which is definitely contemplated, and while the above is only one way in which it is preposed to solve the problem of vocational training, it is deserving Of mention here on account of its suggestiveness and practical feasibility. The actual manner in which they are solving this problem will be described in subsequent pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A District Conference Held at Gary on History Teaching in the Secondary Schools Vol 13 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A District Conference Held at Gary on History Teaching in the Secondary Schools Vol 13 Classic Reprint written by Conference on History Teaching Schools and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A District Conference Held at Gary on History Teaching in the Secondary Schools, Vol. 13 As a part of its public service activities, during the first half of the school year, 1914-15, the Extension Division, in cooperation with the Department of History, extended to the teachers in the public schools of the State a consultation service on teaching problems in history. This work, which was in charge of Assistant Professor Oscar H. Williams, was designed to meet the needs of history teachers who desire direction in the study of methods and in the analysis of the results of their teaching. As an outgrowth of the work, and as a means of reaching a considerable number of high school teachers and of facilitating the study of the problems of their field by the teachers themselves, the Conference on History Teaching in Secondary Schools was organized. It was held in the Emerson School at Gary on February 26 and 27, 1915. Its purpose was twofold; first, to consider some of the more vital and concrete problems in the everyday teaching of history in high schools, and secondly, to define standards for measuring the worth of courses of study and methods of teaching history in the schools. The Gary public schools proved an interesting and appropriate setting for the conference. Contrary to the usual practice in these widely advertised schools, they were open to the visiting teachers on the days of the conference. A considerable number of principals and teachers of history of northern Indiana high schools was present all or most of the two days of the conference. As an important adjunct to the conference, an exhibit of visualizing apparatus for teaching history was displayed in the library of the Emerson school. The exhibit was collected by Mr. M. J. Thue, of the East Chicago high school, and was under his personal charge during the meeting. It was visited by many of the teachers and principals who were in attendance at the conference.
