Download or read book The Free Will Baptist Vol 116 written by C. H. Overman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Will Baptist, Vol. 116: January 1999 In August of 1997, we commented about the coming millennium and what a unique time it is to be living and being a part of it. This year will mark the end of a century and the end of a one - thousand-year period. (the fact, however, is that the beginning of the new millennium will not actually take place until 2001; but the big celebrations, etc, will take place next year.) When I was in my thirties, I wondered if I would be living when we entered into the new century and the new millennium. At that time it didn't seem likely; seventy years old seemed to be a long way off. Over the years, I have modified that view a great deal until now it is most likely that I will be here living, that is however, I will be a few months short of seventy because my birthday comes in October. Lots of things can happen in a year's time, and even within the span of one hour or one day. Life is uncertain, and in reality we can live only one day at the time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Will Baptist, Vol. 131: June 2013 There is a picture on my computers. It is a photo of my father. I look at this photo often. It was taken about two summers before my Dad died. My wife and one of our daughters had gone to my parent's home to pick giant blueberries. My dad, though frail and unsteady on his feet, insisted on joining the picking party. He was coming from inside the pack house as I was coming from my car. With camera in hand I asked him to stop. That's how I got this photo. There he is. A cap on his head, a blue plaid shirt and khaki pants adorn his body. A big white bucket is gripped by his left hand. The early morning sun drenches his face with radiant light. A folding chair is in the picture. It will accompany him to the lush berry bushes. I don't think I will ever forget the day. It was a simple day like we'd shared hundreds of times before. We worked, talked, laughed, and spent time together. The blueberries were delicious. The visit and time spent together was extravagant. I can go back to the bushes, but it is not the same. My father's tired body gave out and he died about a year and a half after I took the picture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Will Baptist, Vol. 123: January 2006 The beginning Of another year reminds me again that I am numbered among the elderly, and the rapid passing Of the years does not help. Anyone who is 65] years is so listed and categorized, and our number is increasing. This means that we have more clout in our society, and also in political issues that involve the senior citizenry. Aging, Of course, is a natural process - a process that many face with doubt and uncertainties. Concerns about health, family, and living conditions are Of major concern. The elderly's place in society has a great bearing on life's fulfillment. For those Who desire to make his or her contribution to society as a senior citizen, the challenge is great and sometimes overwhelming. For some there may be a sense Of foreboding, a feeling that life is over. For those who fail to find their niche Of contentment in things they do, etc., the meaning to life is lost. Everyone looks forward to retirement, the day when they vacate that place Of employment for good, but Often with no structured plans to fill the passing days and hours. In reality, there is no such thing as total retirement - just leisurely sitting back and doing nothing. Lots Of folks I have known soon found that they needed to be active - doing something to contribute to society's advancement. One can go fishing or play golf, or a hundred other so-called relaxing activities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Baptist Theology written by James Leo Garrett and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title offers a comprehensive analysis of Baptist theology. Embracing in one common trajectory the major Baptist confessions of faith, the major Baptist theologians, and the principal Baptist theological movements and controversies, this book spans four centuries of Baptist doctrinal history. Acknowledging first the pre-1609 roots (patristic, medieval, and Reformational) of Baptist theology, it examines the Arminian versus Calvinist issues that were first expressed by the General Baptists and the Particular Baptists; that dominated English and American Baptist theology during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from Helwys and Smyth and from Bunyan and Kiffin to Gill, Fuller, Backus, and Boyce; and, that were quickened by the 'awakenings' and the missionary movement. Concurrently there were the Baptist defense of the Baptist distinctives vis-a-vis the pedobaptist world and the unfolding of a strong Baptist confessional tradition. Then during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the liberal versus evangelical issues became dominant with Hovey, Strong, Rauschenbusch, and Henry in the North and Mullins, Conner, Hobbs, and Criswell in the South even as a distinctive Baptist Landmarkism developed, the discipline of biblical theology was practiced and a structured ecumenism was pursued. Missiology both impacted Baptist theology and took it to all the continents, where it became increasingly indigenous. Conscious that Baptists belong to the free churches and to the believers' churches, a new generation of Baptist theologians at the advent of the twenty-first century appears somewhat more Calvinist than Arminian and decidedly more evangelical than liberal.

Download or read book The Poisonwood Bible written by Barbara Kingsolver and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize • An Oprah's Book Club Selection “Powerful . . . [Kingsolver] has with infinitely steady hands worked the prickly threads of religion, politics, race, sin and redemption into a thing of terrible beauty.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review The Poisonwood Bible, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, established Barbara Kingsolver as one of the most thoughtful and daring of modern writers. Taking its place alongside the classic works of postcolonial literature, it is a suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in Africa. The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it—from garden seeds to Scripture—is calamitously transformed on African soil. The novel is set against one of the most dramatic political chronicles of the twentieth century: the Congo's fight for independence from Belgium, the murder of its first elected prime minister, the CIA coup to install his replacement, and the insidious progress of a world economic order that robs the fledgling African nation of its autonomy. Against this backdrop, Orleanna Price reconstructs the story of her evangelist husband's part in the Western assault on Africa, a tale indelibly darkened by her own losses and unanswerable questions about her own culpability. Also narrating the story, by turns, are her four daughters—the teenaged Rachel; adolescent twins Leah and Adah; and Ruth May, a prescient five-year-old. These sharply observant girls, who arrive in the Congo with racial preconceptions forged in 1950s Georgia, will be marked in surprisingly different ways by their father's intractable mission, and by Africa itself. Ultimately each must strike her own separate path to salvation. Their passionately intertwined stories become a compelling exploration of moral risk and personal responsibility.
