Book Patient Outcomes Improve with Shared Governance

Download or read book Patient Outcomes Improve with Shared Governance written by Arylea Rau and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been shown in the literature review that certain environmental conditions lead to nursing burn out. Nursing burnout is identified by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of a sense of accomplishment (Van Bogaert, Kowalski, Weeks, Van Heusden, and Clarke, 2013). If not addressed, nursing burn out can lead to poor patient outcomes, decreased patient satisfaction, decreased nursing satisfaction, and a loss of nursing staff. The purpose of this study was to identify nursing burnout and take steps toward an environment of shared governance which empowers nurses. A review of the literature regarding nursing burnout and shared governance was utilized to identify nursing burnout and a shared governance model. The use of two surveys ' Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Brisbane Practice Environment Method were applied to identify the severity of nursing burn out as well as the perception of the nurses regarding their practice environment. Midway in the study a third survey, developed by the author, was employed to gage the on-going effectiveness of the shared governance model. In conclusion, nurses who feel valued, who have a say in their practice environment are more satisfied. Nurses who communicate well and interact respectfully with their peers and physicians feel more empowered. Overall, the shared governance model leads to improved patient outcomes, improved nursing satisfaction, and retention of nursing staff which benefits the organization financially.

Book Nursing Empowerment and Shared Governance

Download or read book Nursing Empowerment and Shared Governance written by Rose L Valentino and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Empowerment applies to almost any activity associated with the human experience. The human experience is the core pillar of nursing practice; therefore, it is critical to the application of the art and science of nursing. Empowerment of registered nurses (RN) through professional practice frameworks that are inclusive of shared governance has been proposed to improve quality patient care, increase work effectiveness, improved organizational loyalty, and staff satisfaction. Using Kanter's (1977) theory of structural empowerment, a unit-based practice council was implemented in an ambulatory cancer center, within an organization with an established nursing shared governance model. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact on the staff RNs perceptions of empowerment. Pre and post intervention scores of the 22 RNs who participated using the Conditions for Work Empowerment II survey tool perceived themselves as moderately empowered. There was a statistically significant change in empowerment 8-weeks post-implementation of the shared governance unit-based council as indicated by a p-value of 0.032. These findings are not typical of nursing empowerment measurements in the early stages of shared governance implementation. Recommendations for professional practice and future inquiry are included. Key words: nurse; structural; psychological; empowerment; patient outcomes; shared governance; unit-based councils; Kanter; motivation; engagement; ambulatory; evidence-based practice." -- Abstract.
