Yet only 10%-14% survive to the third generation of leaders, due mostly to internal problems that fundamentally reflect poor leadership. This study postulates that family businesses’ poor survivability rates in Saudi Arabia are rooted in the interrelated elements of the founder(s) implicit leadership styles (traits and moral/ethical orientation), the leadership’s influence developing the organization’s culture, and the failure of the leadership to successfully balance family, business, and individual stakeholders’ interests. The research question is: Do the founder(s) moral/ethical qualities of leadership have significant positive/negative effects on the integrity and cohesion of the family (social capital), protection of ownership assets and business growth (organizational capital), and the preservation of the organizational health of the family company? Moreover, what happens when the ethical systems of the founding leadership are ‘nonaligned’? The study is an ethnographic case study of one multinational family business in Saudi Arabia (700 employees in five cities) founded in the 1970s by two brothers, conducted by a founder’s son who is a company senior officer. The study hypothesis is: unethical leadership will have a significant corrosive effect on the family relationships, the business, and stakeholders/employees because of the unethical founder’s power-position/authority and proximity to the families and stakeholders. Tools of analysis include a pre-validated 66-question survey (Organizational Leadership Assessment) to measure the quality of leadership along a scale of autocratic, paternalistic and servant-leadership, and leadership’s effect on the company’s “organizational health” and job satisfaction. The Assessments were completed in October 2017 and November 2019. Also utilized are perceptions charts of the business and family performance, which measure the emotional ties between the among the two founders’ sons, the strengths and weaknesses of the individual leadership of the two founders’ sons; and the Olson’s Circumplex Model which reflects the “cohesion” of the two founders’ families. There are also: Family Firm Symptom Check List, Questionnaire on the Leadership Styles of the 2 Founders for the 2nd generation leaders, Leadership Characteristics and Effectiveness of the case study’s Family Business CEO and COO, Questionnaire on the Leadership values related to OLA 6 values, KPMG Gulf Family Business Survey, and a Family Health Index.
