Book The Effect of Parent Involvement on the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment

Download or read book The Effect of Parent Involvement on the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment written by Melissa Anne Dresko and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts. The mathematics standards introduce students to many new strategies and expectations to which parents have never been exposed. Many parents have expressed concern and frustration about these standards because they are unable to help their children with completing homework correctly. In addition to this, research has confirmed that parental involvement in education is positively associated with student achievement. Therefore, it is a worry if parents are unable to help their children with homework. The major aim of this study was to further investigate parents' attitudes towards mathematics, and more specifically towards the changes that the CCSS have created in 3rd & 4th grade mathematics. Additionally, this study could be beneficial in making future decisions about supporting parents and families. Parents of 3rd & 4th graders were interviewed and asked questions about their feelings towards mathematics, if they help with the mathematics homework, and if they are happy with the changes in mathematics. This information was then compared with their child's winter scores on the standardized district assessment called, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). Although there was not a direct relationship between students' scores on the MAP assessment and the parents' responses, the information collected from the interviews was extremely valuable. Parents have noticed changes in the way students are being taught mathematics and those changes are making it difficult for parents to support their children with homework. The majority of parents are not happy with the changes and do not see the benefits to their children's mathematics skills. Interestingly, many would be interested in a type of mathematics training course for parents. This could lead to parents feeling more supported by the school, and in turn, being able to support their children with homework.

Book Linguistic Influences on Mathematical Cognition

Download or read book Linguistic Influences on Mathematical Cognition written by Ann Dowker and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, an abstract, amodal semantic magnitude representation, largely independent of verbal linguistic representations, has been viewed as the core numerical or mathematical representation This assumption has been substantially challenged in recent years. Linguistic properties affect not only verbal representations of numbers, but also numerical magnitude representation, spatial magnitude representations, calculation, parity representation, place-value representation and even early number acquisition. Thus, we postulate that numerical and arithmetic processing are not fully independent of linguistic processing. This is not to say, that in patients, magnitude processing cannot function independently of linguistic processing we just suppose, these functions are connected in the functioning brain. So far, much research about linguistic influences on numerical cognition has simply demonstrated that language influences number without investigating the level at which a particular language influence operates. After an overview, we present new findings on language influences on seven language levels: - Conceptual: Conceptual properties of language - Syntactic: The grammatical structure of languages beyond the word level influences - Semantic: The semantic meaning or existence of words - Lexical: The lexical composition of words, in particular number words - Visuo-spatial-orthographic: Orthographic properties, such as the writing/reading direction of a language. - Phonological: Phonological/phonetic properties of languages - Other language-related skills: Verbal working memory and other cognitive skills related to language representations We hope that this book provides a new and structured overview on the exciting influences of linguistic processing on numerical cognition at almost all levels of language processing.

Book International Perspectives on Student Outcomes and Homework

Download or read book International Perspectives on Student Outcomes and Homework written by Rollande Deslandes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis of the latest knowledge on homework presents unique findings by researchers from various countries and diverse professional backgrounds. It approaches the topic of homework from several perspectives, including its political and cultural contexts aspects of parental involvement and parent-child relationships school contexts and practices observable impacts It highlights homework-specific concerns and considers two principal solutions. Firstly, support initiatives from schools and communities. Secondly, improved homework design, aimed at attracting greater student interest and promoting communication within families. Recommendations for practice and future research are also discussed. A political analysis shows that current confusion about homework might stem from a tension between two prevailing ideologies, one stressing students’ improved achievement in competing economies, and the other privileging collaboration between the school, family and community. This book considers how both teachers and parents can ensure a balance between the child’s school life and his or her overall development. Certain community resources are available to parents and students, but these in no way absolve parents of the responsibility to maintain an interest in their child’s school activities. International Perspectives on Student Outcomes and Homework proposes ideas and actions of relevance to everyone interested in the issue: school administrations, teachers in training and in practice, parents, and researchers eager to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field. It is a perfect companion to International Perspectives on Contexts, Communities and Evaluated Innovative Practices, also edited by Rollande Deslandes, and published simultaneously by Routledge.

Book The Homework Myth

Download or read book The Homework Myth written by Alfie Kohn and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death and taxes come later; what seems inevitable for children is the idea that, after spending the day at school, they must then complete more academic assignments at home. The predictable results: stress and conflict, frustration and exhaustion. Parents respond by reassuring themselves that at least the benefits outweigh the costs. But what if they don't? In The Homework Myth, nationally known educator and parenting expert Alfie Kohn systematically examines the usual defenses of homework--that it promotes higher achievement, "reinforces" learning, and teaches study skills and responsibility. None of these assumptions, he shows, actually passes the test of research, logic, or experience. So why do we continue to administer this modern cod liver oil -- or even demand a larger dose? Kohn's incisive analysis reveals how a mistrust of children, a set of misconceptions about learning, and a misguided focus on competitiveness have all left our kids with less free time and our families with more conflict. Pointing to parents who have fought back -- and schools that have proved educational excellence is possible without homework -- Kohn shows how we can rethink what happens during and after school in order to rescue our families and our children's love of learning.

Book Effect of Family Math on Student Achievement and Attitude

Download or read book Effect of Family Math on Student Achievement and Attitude written by Brian C. McFadden and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not 4th grade students participating in a series of Family Math Nights had significantly higher achievement scores as well as student and parent attitudes about mathematics when compared to students at the same school who did not participate in the Family Math Nights. In order to gauge the effectiveness ofthe Family Math Nights the following items were analyzed: student achievement will be evaluated by analyzing data using a pretest and posttest of the 4th grade mathematics curriculum given to control and experimental groups; student and parent attitudes about mathematics will be analyzed using a Likert scale survey both at the beginning and conclusion of each Family Math Night. The surveys will be analyzed to see if the Family Math Nights have an impact on student and parent attitudes toward mathematics. Overall, this study provides quantitative information about the effect Family Math can have on students in one elementary school classroom. There is not sufficient evidence to support the positive effect Family Math had on student achievement in mathematics. Yet, for this study when student attitudes were analyzed, survey scores indicated that attending a series of Family Math Nights improved student attitudes towards mathematics. KEYWORDS: Family Math, student achievement, attitudes, parent involvement, parent-school relationships
