Book excerpt: Auditory sensory differences and sensitivities are often mentioned by parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and in research involving children with ASD. Addressing these auditory processing differences is the goal of various auditory treatment techniques, but current research does not yield a body of evidence in support of auditory therapy as a treatment for children with ASD. This study is a single-subject study, repeated across two subjects, to investigate the effect of the Therapeutic Listening program on the social engagement and self-care skills of preschool-aged children with ASD. Both social engagement and self-care skills increased for both subjects in this study. Also, parental stress associated with the mothers' relationship to their child with ASD decreased. These outcomes indicate the Therapeutic Listening program can be a useful modality in the treatment of children with ASD; one that may improve the communication and function of the child and create an environment within the family that decreases maternal stress.

As the number of individuals diagnosed with autism increases, additional effective treatment methods for the treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are needed (Maglione, Gans, Das, Timbie & Kasari, 2012). While behavioral/developmental treatments are currently the most widely used evidence-based interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder, this study aimed to add to growing research showing evidence that naturalistic treatment interventions can be effective in treating persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A new form of therapy that utilizes the naturalistic environment as a milieu for treating behavioral and mental health problems is Nature Therapy. However, given its novelty, there is little research on its effectiveness and even less research on its use with autistic populations. The current initial and promising study explored the effectiveness of a novel therapeutic intervention, Integrated Nature Therapy, that merges evidence based naturalistic practices of Pivotal Response Training with Nature Therapy interventions, to treat maladaptive behaviors in a few cases of children with autism. The main hypothesis is that individuals diagnosed with autism who are exposed to Integrated Nature Therapy will experience a decrease in maladaptive behaviors. Five male and female school-aged children all with previous diagnoses of Autism participated in the study and three of the five participants completed the study.
