Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling book, Curtis and Vivian Morris put a human face on desegregation practices in the South. Focusing on an African American community in Alabama, they document not only the gains but also the significant losses experienced by students when their community school was closed and they were forced to attend a White desegregated school across town. This in-depth volume includes: -- A letter by Dr. William Hooper Councill and speeches by George Washington Trenholm -- two African American leaders who worked with communities to provide quality schooling for African American children during segregation. -- An insider's view of what life was like inside a segregated African American school -- including interviews with graduates who discuss how it felt to be in a caring and nurturing school that provided an atmosphere much like that of a family. -- Actual events that demonstrate the profound negative impact of using skin color and race as a basis for preferential treatment -- including testimonials from parents and students who experienced racial discrimination in their new school. -- A valuable look at the unmet promises of school desegregation that can help us provide a quality education for all children in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reach back into your childhood and recapture the leadership principles you learned from your favorite toys. Authors Ron Hunter and Michael E. Waddell take a nostalgic look back into their childhood toy boxes to revisit the valuable leadership and life lessons we all unintentionally learned during playtime. While these lessons started in fun, as adults, we’ve complicated the principles of leadership - cluttering them with popular trends and theories. Toy Box Leadership clears away the clutter and takes listeners back to the simple and essential roots of the most effective and unchanging leadership best practices. In this book, you will learn: what Lego bricks can teach you about building your business through connection; how Slinky Dog demonstrates the value of patience when you're growing your organization; what every kid learned from the Little Green Army Men that can be used in business strategy; and many more playful and insightful lessons. Whether you still feel young at heart or your childhood seems to be a distant memory, Toy Box Leadership will bring you back to the place where all important life lessons began to reinvigorate your ability to influence and lead others in the playground of life.

Book Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Download or read book Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail written by Mark Fagan and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail tells how a bold, imaginative investment by a public employee pension fund turned into a world-class tourist attraction that helped change the image and boost the economy of an entire state. The pension fund was the Retirement Systems of Alabama, and its alternative investment was in a string of golf courses and affiliated high-end hotels and spas. In business-speak, this was an "economically targeted investment" designed to diversify returns, create jobs, and increase tax revenue. Twenty-five years later, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is known worldwide for the quality and beauty of its courses and the hospitality and elegance of its resorts. It has significantly increased Alabama's infrastructure for tourism and conventions, provided millions upon millions in new tax revenues, spurred construction of thousands of units of adjacent housing, and helped persuade other businesses to locate in the state. Making the Golf Trail a reality involved not only the initial vision of CEO David G. Bronner and his associates at RSA, but also the design genius and reputation of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and the hard work of many dedicated engineers and builders. It also required the cooperation of scores of local and state elected officials and economic developers. This book is the illustrated historical account of the financial, legal, political, and economic impact details of RSA's investment in the RTJ Golf Trail. Such a detailed history could not have been written without the years of economic analysis conducted by author Mark Fagan dating back to the earliest stages of the concept. Fagan's ongoing involvement with Dr. Bronner and those working to develop the Trail made possible the mammoth one-of-a-kind history that is presented in this book.

Book Whiteness Interrupted

Download or read book Whiteness Interrupted written by Marcus Bell and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Whiteness Interrupted Marcus Bell presents a revealing portrait of white teachers in majority-black schools in which he examines the limitations of understandings of how white racial identity is formed. Through in-depth interviews with dozens of white teachers from a racially segregated, urban school district in Upstate New York, Bell outlines how whiteness is constructed based on localized interactions and takes a different form in predominantly black spaces. He finds that in response to racial stress in a difficult teaching environment, white teachers conceptualized whiteness as a stigmatized category predicated on white victimization. When discussing race outside majority-black spaces, Bell's subjects characterized American society as postracial, in which race seldom affects outcomes. Conversely, in discussing their experiences within predominantly black spaces, they rejected the idea of white privilege, often angrily, and instead focused on what they saw as the racial privilege of blackness. Throughout, Bell underscores the significance of white victimization narratives in black spaces and their repercussions as the United States becomes a majority-minority society.
