Book excerpt: THREE PATHS CONVERGE PRELUDE: THE HOSTAGE PRINCE-The bonds are tight, his sword broken, the possibility of rescue hopeless; heir to the throne of the western kingdom, Prince Kajor will be sacrificed on the reptilian Grems' primitive altar of blood and revenge. And yet, he fears neither his enemies, nor the endless torture, nor death, but the eventual ruin of his people under their hateful claws. Doubtful of her charged task, a young woman, Royal Messenger under guidance from the only Master Enchanter undertakes an impossible mission, seeking help from a mythical and almost forgotten demigod. AGENTS OF THE DARK ONE-A final heartbeat, demons at the door, an appeal for help, a chance bridge across the void of the Unknown. Violations of metaphysical law during the rescue of Prince Kajor have brought the inescapable wrath and cold justice of Spectres; a singular, violent death stalks Royal Messenger Marie. Back home, bereft of any trace of his adventure, Paul is heartbroken amidst questions about his own sanity. Rothson can only hope his final expenditure of Power will reach demigod and enchanter before disaster befalls and all that they have achieved is overturned. ENCHANTER'S LOT-A faint breath of shadow whispers past Maximillian amidst his private ritual of black magic, bidding him find someone; Paul helps Marie adjust to existence in his complicated world, unaware of the dark forces seeking them out; Enchanter Gaiwan's manhunt for a renegade sorcerer turns sour, bringing upon him the wrath of dragons, and a nearly impossible errand. Relentlessly, all are drawn to meet across A BRIDGE OF DOOM. This is the first of a series of classical fantasy that combines otherworld elements with this everyday world in a believable manner. The fundamentals of Magic and Power, intrinsic to the story, both psychic and mystic, are described and explained in detail (as opposed to an assumptive glossing over.) The editors at DAW Books cited this book and its sequel "An enjoyable epic. The characters, villains, and creatures are nicely done." This first book begins with Prelude: The Hostage Prince. The heir to the throne of the western lands awakens from a nightmare to find himself still bound and tied to a rough hewn stake, prisoner of his enemies, the Grems, a race of walking, yet primitive, reptilians, "lizards," that have warred unceasingly with the unwanted settlers of their territory. Staunching refusing to negotiate peace of co-existence, the Grems fight a losing battle. In a last, desperate effort, the lizards capture Prince Kajor and hold him hostage far from any aid or rescue, then prepare to perform a murderous blood sacrifice of the Prince on the battlefield before their enemies. Meanwhile, Marie, a royal messenger, has been charged by Master Enchanter Rothson to carry a plea for help through a mystic gateway to a nearly forgotten demigod. Though herself doubtful, especially of mages and enchanters, Marie remains loyal to her future king. Armed with only her wits, her steed, she is given a silver talisman that is to be her protector and key to the gateway. The fact of this being a medieval world other than ancient Earth is revealed when mention is made of the first and second sunrises. Riding at the stroke of first dawn and, under protection of an enchantment cast by her master, Marie avoids capture by Grems along the way and breaches the mystic gateway. Arriving on the far side-a place the reader will recognize as present-day Earth, she is to a college student named Paul asleep in his dormitory room. Unbeknownst to any of them, mysterious entities, metaphysical guardians from her home world, have followed her across the mystic bridge, seeking to restore balance of power, either by escorting her back home alone and reversing events, or by destroying her immediately. The story continues in the second part titled: Agents of the Dark One and the main third part, Enchanter's Lot.

Book excerpt: Somewhere in the Multiverse, in a lab distant from the Makers’ Planet, Tunnel Maker, Creator of Bridges, answers an alarm. His inter-universe probe is detecting signals from another bubble universe, indicating that some new high-intelligence alien species is doing high-energy physics and creating hyperdimensional signals. Tunnel Maker knows that, in another bubble universe, the predatory Hive Mind should be receiving the same signals. It is time to make a Bridge . . . George Griffin, experimental physicist working at the newly-operational Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), observes a proton-proton collision that doesn’t make sense. He chases it down and discovers a Bridgehead, a wormhole link to the Makers’ universe. With help from theorist Roger Coulton and writer Alice Lancaster, he establishes communication with the Makers, only to learn that a Hive invasion of Earth is imminent. As the Hive invasion is destroying humanity, by wormhole the Makers transport George and Roger back to 1987, where they must undertake the task of manipulating the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations to change the future and prevent construction of the SSC. Book excerpt: As the Black Death rampages across Europe, two creatures of the Elder World clash over the rotting corpse of Christendom in Scott Oden's third book in the Grimnir Series Skrælingr. Orcnéas. Fomoraig. He is Grimnir . . . For over a century, he has tracked the dragon, Níðhöggr -- the Malice-Striker -- from the shores of Lake Vänern, across the Baltic Sea, through Russia, and down into the Mediterranean; he has hounded the wyrm from Old Muscovy to Messina. And finally, to the Eternal City -- to Rome, itself. And in Rome, on a cold November night in 1347 AD, on the ruined steps of Old St. Peter’s basilica, Grimnir’s saga comes crashing to an end. A crossbow bolt, loosed in terror, slays him out of hand. It is a mundane finale to a life spent hip-deep in bloodshed and slaughter, surrounded by steel and savagery and the sorcery of the Elder World. But Death is just the beginning . . . Now, on the grim and misty isle of Nástrond, under the shadows of Yggðrasil, Grimnir is plunged headlong into the twisted Valhalla that is the afterlife of his people. Here, bloody in-fighting, schemes and betrayals are the order of the day. Grimnir is forced to contend with a cabal of witches, with giants and trolls who have never felt the light of Miðgarðr’s moon, and with his own rapacious kin as he journeys beyond the shores of Nástrond to find answers. And with every death, Grimnir unravels another thread of a monstrous secret woven at the dawn of time -- one that will turn him from the pawn of unknown gods into the most powerful being in the Nine Worlds. And the most hunted. For he, alone, holds the key to Ragnarök and the Doom of Odin . . .

Book The Bridge at the Edge of the World

Download or read book The Bridge at the Edge of the World written by James Gustave Speth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How serious are the threats to our environment? Here is one measure of the problem: if we continue to do exactly what we are doing, with no growth in the human population or the world economy, the world in the latter part of this century will be unfit to live in. Of course human activities are not holding at current levels—they are accelerating, dramatically—and so, too, is the pace of climate disruption, biotic impoverishment, and toxification. In this book Gus Speth, author of Red Sky at Morning and a widely respected environmentalist, begins with the observation that the environmental community has grown in strength and sophistication, but the environment has continued to decline, to the point that we are now at the edge of catastrophe. Speth contends that this situation is a severe indictment of the economic and political system we call modern capitalism. Our vital task is now to change the operating instructions for today's destructive world economy before it is too late. The book is about how to do that.

Book The Devil s Tickets

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary M. Pomerantz
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2011-07-12
  • ISBN : 1400051630
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book The Devil s Tickets written by Gary M. Pomerantz and published by Crown. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kansas City, 1929: Myrtle and Jack Bennett sit down with another couple for an evening of bridge. As the game intensifies, Myrtle complains that Jack is a “bum bridge player.” For such insubordination, he slaps her hard in front of their stunned guests and announces he is leaving. Moments later, sobbing, with a Colt .32 pistol in hand, Myrtle fires four shots, killing her husband. The Roaring 1920s inspired nationwide fads–flagpole sitting, marathon dancing, swimming-pool endurance floating. But of all the mad games that cheered Americans between the wars, the least likely was contract bridge. As the Barnum of the bridge craze, Ely Culbertson, a tuxedoed boulevardier with a Russian accent, used mystique, brilliance, and a certain madness to transform bridge from a social pastime into a cultural movement that made him rich and famous. In writings, in lectures, and on the radio, he used the Bennett killing to dramatize bridge as the battle of the sexes. Indeed, Myrtle Bennett’s murder trial became a sensation because it brought a beautiful housewife–and hints of her husband’s infidelity–from the bridge table into the national spotlight. James A. Reed, Myrtle’s high-powered lawyer and onetime Democratic presidential candidate, delivered soaring, tear-filled courtroom orations. As Reed waxed on about the sanctity of womanhood, he was secretly conducting an extramarital romance with a feminist trailblazer who lived next door. To the public, bridge symbolized tossing aside the ideals of the Puritans–who referred derisively to playing cards as “the Devil’s tickets”–and embracing the modern age. Ina time when such fearless women as Amelia Earhart, Dorothy Parker, and Marlene Dietrich were exalted for their boldness, Culbertson positioned his game as a challenge to all housebound women. At the bridge table, he insisted, a woman could be her husband’s equal, and more. In the gathering darkness of the Depression, Culbertson leveraged his own ballyhoo and naughty innuendo for all it was worth, maneuvering himself and his brilliant wife, Jo, his favorite bridge partner, into a media spectacle dubbed the Bridge Battle of the Century. Through these larger-than-life characters and the timeless partnership game they played, The Devil’s Tickets captures a uniquely colorful age and a tension in marriage that is eternal.
