They have an extremely broad spectrum of applications, ranging from high-energy physics to the photo cameras of everyday life. This book is a general purpose introduction into the fundamental principles of pixel detector technology and semiconductor-based hybrid pixel devices. Although these devices were developed for high-energy ionizing particles and radiation beyond visible light, they are finding new applications in many other areas. This book will therefore benefit all scientists and engineers working in any laboratory involved in developing or using particle detection.

Book Luminosity Measurement at the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment of the LHC

Download or read book Luminosity Measurement at the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment of the LHC written by Olena Karacheban and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the application of a novel technology for beam instrumentation and luminosity measurement and first results on a cutting edge technology potentially to be used after the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider to higher luminosity. It presents a unique diamond-based luminometer with a detailed performance study. The online bunch-by-bunch luminosity measurements provide an invaluable feedback to the Collider for beam optimisation and for the understanding of beam dynamics. The precision of the luminosity measurement is crucial for all physics analyses. This book highlights the Van der Meer method, which is used for the calibration of the luminometers of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, and describes the estimate of systematic uncertainties, e.g. due to radiation damage of sensors and electronics and uncertainties of beam parameters. For the future high-luminosity upgrade of the collider, sapphire sensors are investigated in a test beam. It is demonstrated for the first time that sapphire sensors can be used as single particle detectors. A model for the charge transport in sapphire is developed and successfully applied.

Book A Hardware Track Trigger for CMS

Download or read book A Hardware Track Trigger for CMS written by Thomas Owen James and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work described in this PhD thesis is a study of a real implementation of a track-finder system which could provide reconstructed high transverse momentum tracks to the first-level trigger of the High Luminosity LHC upgrade of the CMS experiment. This is vital for the future success of CMS, since otherwise it will be impossible to achieve the trigger selectivity needed to contain the very high event rates. The unique and extremely challenging requirement of the system is to utilise the enormous volume of tracker data within a few microseconds to arrive at a trigger decision. The track-finder demonstrator described proved unequivocally, using existing hardware, that a real-time track-finder could be built using present-generation FPGA-based technology which would meet the latency and performance requirements of the future tracker. This means that more advanced hardware customised for the new CMS tracker should be even more capable, and will deliver very significant gains for the future physics returns from the LHC.

Book Development of Pixel Module Assembly Processes for the Phase 2 Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector and Test Beam Measurements with Diamond Pixel Detectors

Download or read book Development of Pixel Module Assembly Processes for the Phase 2 Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector and Test Beam Measurements with Diamond Pixel Detectors written by Helge Christoph Beck and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most powerful machines to study particle physics is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Starting in 2024, it will be upgraded to the High Luminosity-LHC (HL-LHC) to deliver even more data to measure with high precision Standard Model (SM) physics processes, and to maximise the potential to discover new physics. Higher luminosity implies a higher radiation environment, which poses challenges to the detectors of the experiments. To deal with radiation damage, pile up, and needed read-out speed, ATLAS will replace its current tracking detector with the new Inner Tracker (ITk). The inne...

Book CMS Pixel Detector Upgrade and Top Quark Pole Mass Determination

Download or read book CMS Pixel Detector Upgrade and Top Quark Pole Mass Determination written by Simon Spannagel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern high-energy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential cross-section of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new front-end electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new front-end in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpolation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production cross-sections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method.

Book The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider written by Oliver Brüning and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad introduction to the physics and technology of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). This new configuration of the LHC is one of the major accelerator projects for the next 20 years and will give new life to the LHC after its first 15-year operation. Not only will it allow more precise measurements of the Higgs boson and of any new particles that might be discovered in the next LHC run, but also extend the mass limit reach for detecting new particles. The HL-LHC is based on the innovative accelerator magnet technologies capable of generating 11–13 Tesla fields, with effectiveness enhanced by use of the new Achromatic Telescopic Squeezing scheme, and other state-of-the-art accelerator technologies, such as superconducting compact RF crab cavities, advanced collimation concepts, and novel power technology based on high temperature superconducting links. The book consists of a series of chapters touching on all issues of technology and design, and each chapter can be read independently. The first few chapters give a summary of the whole project, of the physics motivation and of the accelerator challenges. The subsequent chapters cover the novel technologies, the new configurations of LHC and of its injectors as well as the expected operational implications. Altogether, the book brings the reader to the heart of technologies for the leading edge accelerator and gives insights into next generation hadron colliders.
