Book Women in Game of Thrones

Download or read book Women in Game of Thrones written by Valerie Estelle Frankel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game of Thrones, one of the hottest series on television, leaves hundreds of critics divided on how "feminist" the show really is. Certainly the female characters, strong and weak, embody a variety of archetypes--widow queens, warrior women, damsels in distress, career women, priestesses, crones, mothers and maidens. However, the problem is that most of them play a single role without nuance--even the "strong women" have little to do besides strut about as one-note characters. This book analyzes the women and their portrayals one by one, along with their historical inspirations. Accompanying issues in television studies also appear, from the male gaze to depiction of race. How these characters are treated in the series and how they treat themselves becomes central, as many strip for the pleasure of men or are sacrificed as pawns. Some nude scenes or moments of male violence are fetishized and filmed to tantalize, while others show the women's trauma and attempt to identify with the scene's female perspective. The key is whether the characters break out of their traditional roles and become multidimensional.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israeli Hebrew is a spoken language, 'reinvented' over the last century. It has responded to the new social and technological demands of globalization with a vigorously developing multisourced lexicon, enriched by foreign language contact. In this detailed and rigorous study, the author provides a principled classification of neologisms, their semantic fields and the roles of source languages, along with a sociolinguistic study of the attitudes of 'purists' and ordinary native speakers in the tension between linguistic creativity and the preservation of a distinct language identity.

The latest volunteer to be "indoctrinated" into the Cauldron is the sassy, full-figured Abigail-who already belongs to the Cauldron's biggest rival. Indoctrinating her would spark a gang war, but the Cauldron aims to own every beautiful woman they find, and just can't turn her away. But Abigail has her own plans. She's in love with Brall's rival, Case, the young stud gang leader she's known her whole life. Abigail will do anything to make Case jealous. Their love is so taboo, she has no choice but to give her body up to the mammoth Brall and his overwhelming brutal passions to spur Case to act on his possessive, forbidden lust.Complicating everything, Abigail's insatiable need for Case's attention drives a wedge between herself and her beautiful best friend, Robin-who's in the midst of an uncontrollable love affair with Brall! After a sinfully short tryst, the disastrously gorgeous Robin and the ripped, dangerous Brall know they belong together-their lust-laden love is true and unquestionable. But incriminating secrets spring from the town like shadows in a canyon, and the war between their rival biker gangs has ripped all four forbidden lovers apart, maybe for good. In a town dominated by men and violence, it will take all of Abigail and Robin's wit and wiles to bring back peace-and to reunite with the men they love. This is a raunchy tale, featuring lots of explicit intimate action-including plenty of group loving. You have been warned.

Book Myths Legends of Japan

Download or read book Myths Legends of Japan written by Frederick Hadland Davis and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Loti in Madame Chrysanthème, Gilbert and Sullivan in The Mikado, and Sir Edwin Arnold in Seas and Lands, gave us the impression that Japan was a real fairyland in the Far East. We were delighted with the prettiness and quaintness of that country, and still more with the prettiness and quaintness of the Japanese people. We laughed at their topsy-turvy ways, regarded the Japanese woman, in her rich-coloured kimono, as altogether charming and fascinating, and had a vague notion that the principal features of Nippon were the tea-houses, cherry-blossom, and geisha. Twenty years ago we did not take Japan very seriously. We still listen to the melodious music of The Mikado, but now we no longer regard Japan as a sort of glorified willow-pattern plate. The Land of the Rising Sun has become the Land of the Risen Sun, for we have learnt that her quaintness and prettiness, her fairy-like manners and customs, were but the outer signs of a great and progressive nation. To-day we recognise Japan as a power in the East, and her victory over the Russian has made her army and navy famous throughout the world. The Japanese have always been an imitative nation, quick to absorb and utilise the religion, art, and social life of China, and, having set their own national seal upon what they have borrowed from the Celestial Kingdom, to look elsewhere for material that should strengthen and advance their position. This imitative quality is one of Japan's most marked characteristics. She has ever been loath to impart information to others, but ready at all times to gain access to any form of knowledge likely to make for her advancement. In the fourteenth century Kenkō wrote in his Tsure-dzure-gusa: "Nothing opens one's eyes so much as travel, no matter where," and the twentieth-century Japanese has put this excellent advice into practice. He has travelled far and wide, and has made good use of his varied observations. Japan's power of imitation amounts to genius. East and West have contributed to her greatness, and it is a matter of surprise to many of us that a country so long isolated and for so many years bound by feudalism should, within a comparatively short space of time, master our Western system of warfare, as well as many of our ethical and social ideas, and become a great world-power. But Japan's success has not been due entirely to clever imitation, neither has her place among the foremost nations been accomplished with such meteor-like rapidity as some would have us suppose.

Book Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions

Download or read book Traditions Redirecting Contemporary Indonesian Cultural Productions written by Jan van der Putten and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a conference held in October 2015 in connection with the Frankfurt Book Fair discussing developments that are considered important in contemporary Indonesian cultural productions. The first part of the book reflects on the traumatic experiences of the Indonesian nation caused by a failed coup on October 1, 1965. In more general theoretical terms, this topic connects to the field of memory studies, which, in recent decades, has made an academic comeback. The focus of the chapters in this section is how certain, often distressing, events are represented in narratives in a variety of media that are periodically renewed, changed, rehearsed, repeated, and performed, in order to become or stay part of the collective memory of a certain group of people. The second part of the book explores how forces of globalisation have impacted upon the local and, linguistically surprisingly, rather homogeneous cultural productions of Indonesia. The main strands of inquiry in this second section are topics of global trends in religion, responses to urban development, the impact of popular literary developments, and how traditions are revisited in order to come to terms with international cultural developments.
