Book The Capture and Stability of a Gravity gradient Satellite in an Eccentric Orbit

Download or read book The Capture and Stability of a Gravity gradient Satellite in an Eccentric Orbit written by D. K. Anand and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports on the investigation of the capture and gravity-gradient stabilization of a satellite in an orbit with an eccentricity of 0.2. The satellite is called LIDOS, and its mission is to obtain geodetic information. The orbit eccentricity gives rise principally to pitch librations. The amplitude of these librations is about 0.26 radian, which represents the minimum solution to the equation of planar librations. For an optimum selection of mass distribution and adverse orbital conditions, all the perturbations combine to cause peak roll amplitudes of 0.27 radian and close to two revolutions in yaw per orbit, in addition to the above mentioned pitch librations. Owing to the large eccentricity, the region of stability, and consequently capture, is small. Furthermore, the obtaining of 1 revolution per orbit by conventional methods of inertia changes does not insure successful gravity-gradient stabilization. Therefore, an electromagnet is employed to maneuver the satellite into the stable region before capture. This is shown by phase plane representation. (Author).

This book was released on 1970 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General analytical methods for predicting planar and three dimensional attitude motion of a gravity gradient spacecraft in an elliptical orbit are developed. Regions of stability from the linearized planar equation of Mathieu form are plotted versus inertia parameters and orbit eccentricity. Similar plots showing the effects of damping are presented. The planar equation for larger eccentricities is examined with asymptotic expansion methods (KBM) for increased accuracy. An analysis based on the Hamiltonian and using canonical transformations and the method of averaging is applied to the three degree of freedom equations. Thirty-two combinations of resonant eigenfrequencies, indicating both nonlinear and parametric resonances, and including six previously shown by Breakwell and Pringle, are found. Nineteen of these combinations lead to unbounded increases in the amplitude of oscillation of one or more of the spacecraft modes. Eight lead to significant interchanges of energy between modes. The remaining five have little effect.

Book Orbital Results from Gravity gradient Stabilized Satellites

Download or read book Orbital Results from Gravity gradient Stabilized Satellites written by Frederick F. Mobley and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of using the earth's gravity field for vertical stabilization of near-earth satellites has intrigued theoreticians for many years. The very small stabilizing torque available and the lack of a natural damping mechanism have been recognized as the major problems. The satellite 1963-22A, launched in June 1963, was the first orbiting vehicle to achieve passive gravity-gradient stabilization. A 100-foot extendible boom was used to develop gravity-gradient stabilizing torque. A combination of a lossy spring and magnetic hysteresis rods provided damping. By June 1964 four other satellites had achieved gravity-gradient stabilization. The satellite 1964-26A was similar to 1963-22A except that good damping was achieved with magnetic hysteresis rods alone. The discovery that several slender rods of magnetic material, weighing only 0.6 pounds and entirely passive, would damp gravity-gradient librations by interaction with the earth's magnetic field was a major advance in space technology. The accuracy of vertical stabilization has typically been better than 10 degrees. (Author).
