Book The Herbal Lore of Wise Women and Wortcunners

Download or read book The Herbal Lore of Wise Women and Wortcunners written by Wolf D. Storl and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “deep excursion into the heart of herbalism” pulls back the curtain on centuries of herbal medicine and offers an inventory of useful plants for the modern herb gardener or homesteader (Rosemary Gladstar) Traditional herbalists or wise women were not only good botanists or pharmacologists; they were also shamanic practitioners and keepers of occult knowledge about the powerful properties of plants. Traveling back to the healing arts of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, The Herbal Lore of Wise Women and Wortcunners takes readers deep into this world, through the leechcraft of heathen society and witches’ herb bundles to the cloister gardens of the Middle Ages. It also examines herbal medicine today in the traditional Chinese apothecary, the Indian ayurvedic system, homeopathy, and Native American medicine. Balancing the mystical with the practical, author Wolf Storl explains how to become an herbalist, from collecting material to distilling and administering medicines. He includes authoritative advice on herb gardening, as well as a holistic inventory of plants used for purposes both benign and malign, from herbs for cooking, healing, beauty, and body care to psychedelic plants, witches’ salves for opening alternative realities, and poisonous herbs that can induce madness or cause death. Storl also describes traditional “women’s plants” and their uses: dyeing cloth, spinning and weaving, or whipping up love potions. The Herbal Lore of Wise Women and Wortcunners is written for professional and amateur herbalists as well as gardeners, urban homesteaders, and plantspeople interested in these rich ancient traditions.

Book Scottish Herbs and Fairy Lore

Download or read book Scottish Herbs and Fairy Lore written by Ellen Hopman and published by . This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the herbal and magical practices of the Scots are echoed in traditional Norwegian folk medicine and magic. This is a valuable resource book not only for the serious folklorist, but also for a wider audience interested in a deeper look at rural Scottish practices. Ms. Hopman has done an amazing amount of research, and her Scottish herbalism section is far more detailed than I've seen elsewhere. A "must have" for the northern European folklorist's library. Jane T. Sibley, Ph.D., author of "The Hammer of the Smith" and "The Divine Thunderbolt: Missile of the Gods." Through her books, Ellen Evert Hopman lifts the veil between worlds of the present and the past. She guides the reader on a fascinating journey to our ancient Celtic history, simultaneously restoring lost knowledge and entertaining the reader. Be prepared to be educated and delighted. Wendy Farley, Clan McKleod The first things is WOW! Ellen Hopman has given us a volume that belongs in Harry Potter's library. This wonderful collection of enchantments, faery lore and herbal potions, is presented by a practicing herbalist and (I suspect) magician. It is a useful manual of magic, an unusual tourist guide to Scotland, certainly a delightful read, and at the very least, a comprehensive and thoroughly footnoted collection of folk lore for humorless librarians and scholars. Matthew Wood MS (Scottish School of Herbal Medicine) Registered Herbalist (American Herbalists Guild) Every now and again, a book emerges from the waves of occult and magical authorship that delves into the deep and ancestral waters of old magic! This book is one of those rare occasions. From the lore of herbs to the blessing of stones; from avioding the elf-blast to healing through Faerie blessing - Ellen guides the reader through ancient groves of oral lore to discover a power and spirit that connects the reader to the oldest of magics, the earth and her elements. I am confident that the Scottish Ancestral Wise Ones, are renewed through this book and the old ways live once again! Book excerpt: Salsa and guacamole wouldn’t be the same without cilantro, and you can’t make pizza without oregano or a mojito without mint. You can use peppermint to settle an upset stomach, ease arthritis pain with stinging nettle, and heal burns and wounds with aloe vera. And then there is cannabis—perhaps the most notorious and divisive herb of all. Despite the fact that herbs are often little more than weeds, cultures around the globe have found hundreds of uses for them, employing them in everything from ancient medicines to savory dishes. While much has been written on cooking and healing with herbs, little has been told about the history of the plants themselves and the incredible journeys they have made. This book elucidates how these often overlooked plants have become a staple in our lives. Unlike spices that quickly traversed the globe through trade, Gary Allen shows that herbs were often hoarded by their cultivators and were central to distinctive regional dishes. He draws on his extensive knowledge of food history to examine herbs in new ways, making Herbs essential reading for any serious foodie. Filled with beautiful illustrations and delicious recipes, this book will complete the kitchen library.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herb Lore: May, 1936 The demand of Americans for Chinese Herbs has for several years been steadily on the increase. Consequently, whereas some forty years ago the sale of Chinese Herbs in the United States was confined almost wholly to the Chinese population, at the time of this writing, the American patrons far outnumber the Chinese. Our company has been doing business in Oakland, California, for the past twenty years. During this period, we have afforded genuine, and, in most cases, permanent relief to numerous persons, variously afflicted. Our harmless, life-giving herbs have so built up their bodies, purified their blood, and renewed their strength that they have again felt like their former selves and have joyfully taken up the burdens of life anew. We are here presenting the testimonials of a number of enthusiastic patrons, some of whom testified in the Federal Court in San Francisco, California, March 1st to 8th, 1932, as to the authenticity of their printed statements; the more recent addresses of whom may be obtained at our office. The office hours of our herbalist are from 10:00 A. M. to 6:00 P. M. daily, Sundays 9:00 A. M. to 12 Noon. Herbs are cooked and the tea served at the office daily to those patrons who either prefer to drink the tea at the office or who have no facilities for cooking the herbs at home. Although there is no charge for cooking the herbs, 90 percent of our patrons prefer to boil them at home, several packages being put up at a time. Herbs are compounded to meet the needs of the individual. In all cases, the price is the same, being ten dollars per week in advance for seven packages, one to be cooked each day either in accordance with directions given, or cooked in four cups of cold water and boiled down to one cup in about 30 minutes, the tea to be strained and drunk while warm. Believing that the American public would be interested to know something of the Chinese theories regarding the functioning of the various organs of the body, and of the Chinese methods of healing that have come down to us through the ages, we are also printing several articles from the pen of our renowned herbalist.
