Book The Bivouac and the Battle Field Or Campaign Sketches in Virginia and Maryland Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bivouac and the Battle Field Or Campaign Sketches in Virginia and Maryland Classic Reprint written by George F. Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bivouac and the Battle-Field, or Campaign Sketches in Virginia and Maryland A few battle-pictures must, of course, find place in our Sketch-book, but they will aim at no general de lineation, being necessarily limited and partial, seek ing to be accurate, however, as far as they go. In deed, no absolutely veritable description of the varied movements over an extensive battle-field can ever be expected ten artistic word-painters will surely give us ten very different pictures, agreeing in generals, but dissimilar in details. Let a man consult the field offi cers of even a Single regiment as to its operations in a. Single fight, and from the incongruities in their sev eral statements he will be able to judge of the difficul ty in painting on canvas or with the pen a true battle picture. Of course, every narrator makes himself the central pivotal point around which the whole battle scenery revolves, and this not egotistically, but natu rally and necessarily. And just in proportion to the fidelity with which he gives us the facts as seen from his personal stand-point, drawing neither from his im agination nor the official reports, Shall we have a small but veritable bit of actual history. Excerpt: ...and sweeping it meanwhile with sheets of fire. Conscious of the weakness of our own line, with no reserves near us, unable to form any idea of the force opposed to us, the only thing to be done is to hold this fence at all hazards, lest the enemy, breaking through at this point, shall flank and put to rout the troops on both sides of us. It remains for the staff to watch closely the line, cheer and encourage the men, look out for a moment of panic, and so keep all to their duty. And hold it they do, inflexibly. For half an hour against this barrier of Northern patriotism dashes wave after wave of Southern treason, to be again and again hurled back broken and discomfited. Individual instances of valor are not wanting: the colorbearer of the 76th New York rashly leaps out to the front, waves bis flag, exclaiming, " There, boys, come up to that!" and falls in the instant, sbot through the bead. But why attempt to designate, where all did so well? At intervals a lull, a mere pattering of musketry, and then the rebel storm bursts forth afresh, and before it some of our men go down, or slowly fall back, wounded and bleeding, to the rear. The twilight gloom is descending, throwing the rebel den into shadow; the darkness adds new horror to the scene; and suddenly a portion of one of our regiments begins to crowd up together, the men pressing against each other, and firing into the air in a sort of frenzy. Terribly contagious is a panic like this. Unless it be instantly quelled, the men will be shooting each other, or rushing to the rear in sudden and disastrous rout/ Somehow and swiftly, military authority must assert itself. The first thing to do is to order them to cease firing. To shout forth such an order at such a time would be like...

Book excerpt: A vivid account of the early battles, first in the Pulitzer Prize-winning trilogy: “One of America’s foremost Civil War authorities” (Kirkus Reviews). The first book in Bruce Catton’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Army of the Potomac Trilogy, Mr. Lincoln’s Army is a riveting history of the early years of the Civil War, when a fledgling Union Army took its stumbling first steps under the command of the controversial general George McClellan. Following the secession of the Southern states, a beleaguered President Abraham Lincoln entrusted the dashing, charismatic McClellan with the creation of the Union’s Army of the Potomac and the responsibility of leading it to a swift and decisive victory against Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Although a brilliant tactician who was beloved by his troops and embraced by the hero-hungry North, McClellan’s ego and ambition ultimately put him at loggerheads with his commander in chief—a man McClellan considered unworthy of the presidency. McClellan’s weaknesses were exposed during the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American military history, which ended in a stalemate even though the Confederate troops were greatly outnumbered. After Antietam, Lincoln ordered McClellan’s removal from command, and the Union entered the war’s next chapter having suffered thousands of casualties and with great uncertainty ahead. America’s premier chronicler of the nation’s brutal internecine conflict, Bruce Catton is renowned for his unparalleled ability to bring a detailed and vivid immediacy to Civil War battlefields and military strategy sessions. With tremendous depth and insight, he presents legendary commanders and common soldiers in all their complex and heartbreaking humanity.
