Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adventures Of Harry Richmond (Volume I): In VIII Volumes (Eight Books) - Vol. I. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before unification, Germany was a loose collection of variously sovereign principalities, nurtured on deep thought, fine music and hard rye bread. It was known across Europe for the plentiful supply of consorts to be found among its abundant royalty, but the language and culture was largely incomprehensible to those outside its lands. In the long eighteenth and nineteenth centuries- between the end of the Thirty Years War in 1648 and unification under Bismarck in 1871 - Germany became the land of philosophers, poets, writers and composers. This particularly German cultural movement was able to survive the avalanche of Napoleonic conquest and exploitation and its impact was gradually felt far beyond Germany's borders. In this book, Roderick Cavaliero provides a fascinating overview of Germany's cultural zenith in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He considers the work of Germany's own artistic exports - the literature of Goethe and Grimm, the music of Wagner, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Bach and the philosophy of Schiller and Kant - as well as the impact of Germany on foreign visitors from Coleridge to Thackeray and from Byron to Disraeli. Providing a comprehensive and highly-readable account of Germany's cultural life from Frederick the Great to Bismarck, 'Genius, Power and Magic' is fascinating reading for anyone interested in European history and cultural history.

Book Selected Letters of Leslie Stephen

Download or read book Selected Letters of Leslie Stephen written by John W. Bicknell and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-09-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since F.W. Maitland's Life and Letters of Leslie Stephen (1907), there has been no volume of the letters written by this extraordinary and eminent Victorian. Alpinist, literary critic, god-killer, editor of The Cornhill Magazine and The Dictionary of National Biography, biographer, historian of ideas, and father of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, Stephen corresponded with a host of men and women, including such notables as his American friends - James Russell Lowell, Justice Holmes and art historian Charles E. Norton; such contemporaries among the intelligentsia as John Morley, Henry Sidgwick, George Eliot, Robert Louis Stevenson, F.W. Maitland, and Thomas Hardy; and the members of his family - Minny, his first wife; his sister-in-law, Anny Ritchie; his son Thoby; and his best beloved second wife, Julia. In his letters, always readable, we find his enthusiasms, his ironic humour, his self-doubt and self-pity, his anguish over his retarded child Laura, his candour, his lively portraits of people and places, his delight in the young - Nessa, Ginia and Thoby, and his direct and easy style as he responds to his reader's interests and needs. This second volume follws the demanding years Stephen spent as Editor of The Dictionary of National Biography, his happy life with Julia until her death in 1895 and his continuing devotion to literature, a source of much solace in his last years.

Book excerpt: A novel in which a mystic named El Rami, a practioner of the arts of healing drawn from the occult science of the ancient Egyptians, attempts to control and dominate the soul of a dead girl. El Rami travels from London to Syria where he meets a caravan in the desert with two ailing women in need of care and attention. He agrees to help, and he restores one, an old women, to health. The other, a young orphan girl called Lilith, succumbs to her illness and dies. El Rami practices his mysterious arts on Lilith in an attempt to demonstrate the existence of life after death. He administers an elixir that brings her body back to life, and returns to London with the breathing corpse of Lilith. He hides her in a room in his mansion for six years, and summoning all his powers succeeds in being able to summon her soul back to her body at will. The head of the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross of which El Rami was a member, Heliobas, arrives. Readers know him from The Romance of Two Worlds and Ardath. Heliobas is alarmed by El Rami's experiments, and tells him that he must release the girl and allow her to die. But El Rami is obsessed with the beautiful Lilith, and intends on making her his soulmate. Despite Lilith's pleas and warnings, as El Rami kisses her she crumbles to ashes in from of him. When El Rami recovers himself, he is taken to the Brotherhood's monastery in Cyprus, a mental wreck."--Synopsis from MarieCorelli.org.uk
