This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) has dramatically affected the world of catalysis. Their inherent properties that make them excellent auxiliary ligands for catalytic processes have countless laboratories worldwide probing and exploiting every notable feature they possess. However, while there is no shortage of attention in this field of research, there has been considerably less interest in NHCs with an ability chelate to metals via a mixed-donor ligand architecture. Thus, this thesis describes the synthesis and application of a ligand set comprised of bidentate mixed-donor NHC ligands. The ligands prepared all contain a mesitylimidazol-2-ylidene core unit, but incorporate different donor-functionalized tethers. These mixed-donor NHC ligands are synthesized by using a strong base, such as KN(SiMe3)2, to deprotonate the imidazolium salt precursors. This strategy was used to effectively prepare 1-mesityl-3-(2-(mesitylamino)ethyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, Mes[CNH] and 1-mesityl-3-(2-aminoethyl)imidazol-2-ylidene, Mes[CNH2]. Mes[CNH] was found to be a convenient proligand for the synthesis of various M-NHC (M = Rh, Ir, Ru, Pd, Ni, Fe, Ag, Li) compounds. These Mes[CNH]-M complexes demonstrated the hemilabile character of the Mes[CNH] ligand forming complexes that incorporated either a coordinated or uncoordinated amino tether. Mes[CNH]M(diene)Cl, Mes[CN]M(diene) and [Mes[CNH]M(diene)]BF4(M = Rh, Ir; diene = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, 2,5-norbornadiene) were synthesized and investigated for their ability to perform hydrogenation and hydrosilylation reactions with various substrates. Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(PCy3)Cl2, Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(py)Cl2 (py = pyridine) and Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(PMe3)Cl2 were also synthesized and fully characterized. The activity of the former two Ru complexes was studied for their ability to catalyze ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reactions. In addition, the phosphine dissociation rate of Mes[CNH]Ru(=CHPh)(PCy3).

Book Transition Metal Complexes of N heterocyclic Carbenes and Derivatives Thereof

Download or read book Transition Metal Complexes of N heterocyclic Carbenes and Derivatives Thereof written by Timothy Gordon Larocque and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have played a dominant role in organometallic chemistry for decades and revolutionized the field of homogenous catalysis. NHCs have been thoroughly studied, both experimentally and theoretically, and have shown unique reactivity towards transition metals, chalcogens, azides and pnictogens. This thesis is aimed at utilizing the unique reactivity of N-heterocyclic carbenes to develop novel, robust catalysts to mediate organic transformations. The multi-faceted work within this thesis explores the use of NHCs as ancillary ligands on early and late transition metals as potential catalysts for olefin polymerization and ring-closing metathesis, respectively. This work also includes exploring the synthesis and coordination of ancillary ligands derived from the unique reactivity of NHCs towards azides, chalcogens and pnictinidenes. The reactivity of a novel aryl-substituted acyclic imino-N-heterocyclic carbene to early transition metals, cyclooctasulfur and Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes was explored. The reactivity of imidazol-2-imide towards Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes and the synthesis and coordination of a novel group of ligands bearing an imidazol-2-imine scaffold were also explored. Lastly, this work will include the reactivity of IMes=PPh to Grubbs-type ruthenium benzylidene complexes.

Book Late Transition Metal Carboryne Complexes

Download or read book Late Transition Metal Carboryne Complexes written by Zaozao Qiu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zaozao Qiu shows in this thesis that transition metals can mediate or catalyze the cycloaddition or coupling reactions of carboryne with alkynes or alkenes to afford benzocarboranes, alkenylcarboranes or dihydrobenzocarboranes. These results represent powerful strategies to assemble useful complex molecules from very simple precursors in a single operation. Carboranes have many applications in medicine. However, their unique structures make derivatization difficult and the limited efficient synthetic methods to obtain functional carborane materials have restricted applications of carboranes within a narrow scope. This work breaks a new ground in metal-carboryne chemistry and will have a significant impact on synthetic, cluster and materials chemistry.

Book Design Synthesis and Characterization of Chiral CCC NHC Transition Metal Complexes and Catalytic Activity

This book was released on 2016 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first stable "free" N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) was isolated in 1991, since then many classes of NHCs were synthesized and isolated. N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have become a common ligand in the synthesis of metal complexes, due to their strong [Sigma]-donation with poor [pi]-acceptor ability. Among all the NHC metal complexes, Hollis group was interested in exploring CCC-NHC pincer complexes. In 2005, Hollis and co-workers synthesized and isolated first achiral CCC-NHC zirconium pincer amido complex and studied its catalytic ability to perform intramolecular hydroamination of aminoalkenes. Later, Hollis group designed and developed new NHCs with a saturated chiral backbone, and used these new ligands to generate a new series of metal complexes. This dissertation is focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of several chiral bi-dentate NHC ligands with varying substituents on the backbone. These NHC ligands were used to synthesize several chiral mono, bis and tris amido CCC-NHC zirconium pincer complexes. Further, transmetallation to cobalt complexes were achieved. Intramolecular hydroamination was measured for several chiral bis and tris amido CCC-NHC pincer zirconium catalysts. Variants of these catalytic systems were generated with differing steric hinderance and electronic structure. The enantioselectivity of these novel new molecules were studied.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Reactivity Evaluation of Late Transition Metal Aluminum Heterobimetallic Complexes Toward Molecular Hydrogen

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Reactivity Evaluation of Late Transition Metal Aluminum Heterobimetallic Complexes Toward Molecular Hydrogen written by Roland Malcolm Charles III and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation and development of heterobimetallic systems has seen a meteoric surge over the past decade. Generally, these heterobimetallic systems involve two transition metals with distinct properties used together to activate chemical bonds. Many heterobimetallics consist of a soft, low-valent metal and a harder, high-valent metal. The unique electronics afforded by heterobimetallics of this sort can be exploited, yielding access to novel reactivities that may be otherwise inaccessible to a single transition metal. Less studied are heterobimetallic complexes composed of one late transition metal (LTM) and one Lewis-acidic p-block (Group 13) metal. Due to its electropositivity being the highest among Group 13 metals as well as its high earth-abundance, aluminum holds particular interest to the Brewster laboratory. In contrast to their exhaustively investigated boron analogues, the field of aluminum-containing heterobimetallics is relatively uncultivated due to the high reactivity and synthetic difficulty of aluminum species, making isolation and characterization quite challenging. One of the aims of the Brewster lab is to develop heterobimetallic systems comprised of an electron-rich, low-valent transition metal and aluminum to investigate potential synergistic reactivity between both metal centers. In this dissertation, I report the successful synthesis and electronic characterization of myriad novel mono- and heterobimetallic complexes of either iridium or rhodium and aluminumover 35 new complexes in total. Moreover, I detail the ability of selected heterobimetallic complexes to facilitate activation of molecular hydrogen as well as hydrogenolysis, thereby generating alkane gas..
