Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synchronous Signalling in Navigation Synchronised signalling is based on a fact, the ascertainment of which is old in the history of scientific advance that disturbances travel with different speeds in different media. Light and other electro-magnetic disturbances (such as telegraphy or wireless may be regarded as instantaneously propagated; sound travels relatively slowly; and in water more than four times as fast as in air. These are fundamental facts which have been made the subject of accurate measurements and certainly require no further experiments to establish. They are the scientific bases of synchronous signalling. The practical basis differs somewhat accord ing as we consider its application to coastal stations, or to the prevention of collision. Re garding the first, we may say that two factors only are involved: (1) The possibility of simul taneously originating at a signal station any two or all three of these disturbances; and (2) the possibility of hearing and timing them on board ship. No one acquainted with what has been already accomplished would hesitate in con sidering both these conditions as perfectly feasible. Fortunately we may take even a stronger position. The method has been made the subject of a practical trial by the Hydro graphic Department of the United States Navy. All three kinds of signals - wireless, submarine, and aerial - were sent out synchronously from the Nantucket Shoals Lightship. A suitably equipped vessel, receiving signals both by chronograph and stop-watch, made a cruise in hazy weather in the neighbourhood; at in tervals finding her distance from the lightship by timing the arrival of the signals. The results are shown on a chart dated 1911 The known course of the vessel and the course as defined by the signals appear as three lines which show a quite satisfactory agreement over conditions of distance varying from one to eight nautical miles. Book Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 in Telecoms

Download or read book Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 in Telecoms written by Jean-Loup Ferrant and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the multiple technical aspects of the distribution of synchronization in new generation telecommunication networks, focusing in particular on synchronous Ethernet and IEEE1588 technologies. Many packet network engineers struggle with understanding the challenges that precise synchronization distribution can impose on networks. The usual “why”, “when” and particularly “how” can cause problems for many engineers. In parallel to this, some other markets have identical synchronization requirements, but with their own design requirements, generating further questions. This book attempts to respond to the different questions by providing background technical information. Invaluable information on state of-the-art packet network synchronization and timing architectures is provided, as well as an unbiased view on the synchronization technologies that have been internationally standardized over recent years, with the aim of providing the average reader (who is not skilled in the art) with a better understanding of this topic. The book focuses specifically on synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 PTP-based technologies, both key developments in the world of synchronization over the last 10 years. The authors address the needs of engineers and technical managers who are struggling with the subject of synchronization and provide an engineering reference for those that need to consider synchronization in NGN. The market applications that are driving the development of packet network synchronization and timing architectures are also discussed. This book provides a wide audience with everything they need to know when researching, implementing, buying and deploying packet synchronization architectures in telecommunication networks.

Book Technologies for Smart Cities

Download or read book Technologies for Smart Cities written by Yuri A. Vershinin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives readers an overview about technologies that are useful for developments related to Smart Cities. Some technologies are already available, such for example, as smart meters for electricity and gas in buildings. But there are possibilities to incorporate existing devices into wider networks with other smart devices that currently operate independently. This in turn will considerably improve the reduction of the energy consumption in buildings, reduction of emission pollutions in cities and improvement of the well-being of people. The other objective of this book is to introduce readers to new technologies which are not yet implemented in areas related to the efficient functioning of cities. For example, areas related to Intelligent Transport Systems are mostly developed for the optimization of the traffic flow, reduction of accidents on roads, improvement of the safety of drivers and related to road transportation problems. The rapid advances in Blockchain technologies are also covered.
