Book Power and Doctoral Supervision Teams

Download or read book Power and Doctoral Supervision Teams written by Margaret J Robertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power and Doctoral Supervision Teams engages with the interplay of power generated through the way doctoral supervision teams are structured and how they operate in reality. The stories of experienced academic supervisors and late-stage doctoral students from a cross section of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences teach us what theory and how-to guide books cannot. By using the narrative of stories to explain the models, the lived experience of interpersonal power dynamics shows the promises, pitfalls, joys and frustrations of the various team forms. The book alerts the reader to the great variety of practices and the potential and hazards within. This book is an essential resource for doctoral research students to understand what works in team supervision; for academic supervisors who want to look at options outside of supervision or readjust their current strategies; and for academic administrators as they revise policies that apply to doctoral supervision.

Book Supervision Essentials for a Systems Approach to Supervision

Download or read book Supervision Essentials for a Systems Approach to Supervision written by Elizabeth Holloway and published by Clinical Supervision Essential. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of clinical supervision is the relationship between the supervisor and supervisee. Elizabeth Holloway's systems approach to supervision conceptualizes this all-important relationship as consisting of several key dimensions, or systems, which interact and together help create and maintain the supervisory relationship. These systems include the client, the trainee, the supervisor, the functions and learning tasks in supervision, and the institution in which the supervision process is taking place. As the author compellingly argues, for clients, trainees, and supervisors alike, our decision-making and actions are always consciously or tacitly embedded within these systems. Understanding the dynamic interplay of the interdependent components of each system is essential to building a strong and thriving supervisory relationship. With detailed case examples (including excerpts and analyses of real supervision sessions with real trainees, as demonstrated in the author's DVD Systems Approach to Psychotherapy Supervision, also available from APA Books), the author skillfully demonstrates the various roles supervisors play, from monitor and advisor, to role model, consultant, and mentor. The unique importance of supervisory competencies, including counseling skills, case conceptualization, ethical practice, intra and interpersonal awareness, and self-evaluation, are examined in full depth.

Book Machine Learning from Weak Supervision

Download or read book Machine Learning from Weak Supervision written by Masashi Sugiyama and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental theory and practical algorithms of weakly supervised classification, emphasizing an approach based on empirical risk minimization. Standard machine learning techniques require large amounts of labeled data to work well. When we apply machine learning to problems in the physical world, however, it is extremely difficult to collect such quantities of labeled data. In this book Masashi Sugiyama, Han Bao, Takashi Ishida, Nan Lu, Tomoya Sakai and Gang Niu present theory and algorithms for weakly supervised learning, a paradigm of machine learning from weakly labeled data. Emphasizing an approach based on empirical risk minimization and drawing on state-of-the-art research in weakly supervised learning, the book provides both the fundamentals of the field and the advanced mathematical theories underlying them. It can be used as a reference for practitioners and researchers and in the classroom. The book first mathematically formulates classification problems, defines common notations, and reviews various algorithms for supervised binary and multiclass classification. It then explores problems of binary weakly supervised classification, including positive-unlabeled (PU) classification, positive-negative-unlabeled (PNU) classification, and unlabeled-unlabeled (UU) classification. It then turns to multiclass classification, discussing complementary-label (CL) classification and partial-label (PL) classification. Finally, the book addresses more advanced issues, including a family of correction methods to improve the generalization performance of weakly supervised learning and the problem of class-prior estimation.
