Download or read book The Sins of the Fathers written by Jeffrey K. Olick and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National identity and political legitimacy always involve a delicate balance between remembering and forgetting. All nations have elements in their past that they would prefer to pass over—the catalog of failures, injustices, and horrors committed in the name of nations, if fully acknowledged, could create significant problems for a country trying to move on and take action in the present. Yet denial and forgetting carry costs as well. Nowhere has this precarious balance been more potent, or important, than in the Federal Republic of Germany, where the devastation and atrocities of two world wars have weighed heavily in virtually every moment and aspect of political life. The Sins of the Fathers confronts that difficulty head-on, exploring the variety of ways that Germany’s leaders since 1949 have attempted to meet this challenge, with a particular focus on how those approaches have changed over time. Jeffrey K. Olick asserts that other nations are looking to Germany as an example of how a society can confront a dark past—casting Germany as our model of difficult collective memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We welcome you to the 6th International Conference on E-Commerce and Web Technology (EC-Web 2005) held in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was held in conjunction with DEXA 2005. This conference was organized for the first time in Greenwich, UK, in 2000, and it has been able to attract an increasing number of participants and interest, reflecting the progress made in the field. As in the five previous years, EC-Web 2005 served as a forum that brought together researchers from academia and practitioners from industry to discuss the current state of the art in e-commerce and Web technologies. We are sure that inspirations and new ideas emerged from the intensive discussions that took place during the formal sessions and social events. Keynote addresses, research presentations and discussions during the conference helped to further develop the exchange of ideas among current researchers, developers and practitioners. The conference attracted 139 paper submissions and each paper was reviewed by three Program Committee members. The Program Committee selected 39 papers for presentation and publication (an acceptance rate of 28%). And we have to confess that this task was not that easy due to the high quality of the submitted papers.

Book Organizational Behavior Solutions for Management

Download or read book Organizational Behavior Solutions for Management written by Paul D. Sweeney and published by McGraw-Hill/Irwin. This book was released on 2001-08-02 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Organizational Behavior: Solutions for Management, Paul Sweeney and Dean McFarlin have identified 4 key management skills areas that act as building blocks for successful behavior in management. These skills are: self-insight/perceptual skills; ability to inspire/motivate/lead; ability to analyze situations; and personal flexibility/adaptability. The authors also feel strongly that successful management of organizational behavior rests on the problem-solving process; in fact, the 4 skills listed above enable managers to use this process to deal with the “people problems” they face more effectively. If nothing else, studying what organizational behavior has to offer as a field should help a person figure out his/her strengths and weaknesses.

Book Improving Writing and Thinking Through Assessment

Download or read book Improving Writing and Thinking Through Assessment written by Teresa L. Flateby and published by IAP. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving Writing and Thinking through Assessment is designed to help individual faculty and administrators select assessment approaches and measures to maximize their students’ writing and thinking. The book offers useful guidance, through presentation of recommended assessment guidelines and measurement principles in Part 1 and applications from a variety of contributors in Part 2. It addresses a wide range of audiences, including instructors who want to assess and thus foster writing and thinking in their courses, administrators and instructors planning to assess writing and thinking at the program or institutional level, and graduate students interested in improving students’ writing and critical thinking. This book is more guide than a “cookbook.” By providing comprehensive standards and criteria that help individuals or teams develop plans and measures to improve writing and thinking, the book should be helpful for academic and Student Affairs administrators and faculty - as the principles apply equally to all engaged in assessment. Contributors, representing a wide range of educators, illustrate many of the approaches and methods described in the theoretical section of the book using a variety of assessment strategies at both classroom and program levels. Readers will see how different types of institutions, both private and public as well as undergraduate and graduate, have designed assessment strategies and plans to gauge and enhance writing and thinking growth in the classroom and across programs. They candidly describe challenges encountered and solutions they adopted or suggest. These chapters reflect approaches and perspectives from various discourse communities – including writing program administrators, composition faculty, assessment professionals, and individual faculty representing several disciplines. The author argues the urgent need to develop strong writers and thinkers. She discusses challenges and obstacles, but underscores the necessity for more faculty involvement and institutional commitment. This book will help institutions and individual faculty design and implement sound, meaningful assessment strategies to foster effective writing and thinking that will both advance the goals of the institutional mission and meet faculty’s disciplinary objectives and scholarly concerns.

Book Cooperation in the Multi Ethnic Classroom 1994

Download or read book Cooperation in the Multi Ethnic Classroom 1994 written by Helen Cowie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this book describes how cooperative group work can enhance relationships in the classroom, reduce prejudice and alleviate problems of victimisation and peer rejection. It combines quantitative experimental analysis with detailed case studies; considers the impact of the family on pupil behaviour; and concludes with practical recommendations to foster social acceptance in the classroom. There is a strong emphasis on helping teachers to develop group work in their classrooms as an effective means of averting trouble and inducing a genuinely better attitude to collaboration with their fellow pupils. The difficulties in implementation which can arise if teachers are not motivated, or if pupils are disruptive, are honestly confronted. The book will also help educational and developmental psychologists involved in resolving behavioural difficulties resulting from social tensions in multi-ethnic classrooms.
