Download or read book The Pinocchio Effect written by Elizabeth Janson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatization and systematic exclusion are beyond common sense within U.S. public schools. The failure to address social problems spills over to schools where youth who refuse to conform to the broken system are labelled as deviant and legitimately excluded. Students who conform are made real by the system and allowed back into society to keep manufacturing the same inequalities. This is the Pinocchio Effect. It involves the legitimization of hegemonic knowledge and the oppression of bodies, mind, and spiritualities. The book analyzes the impact of colonialities within U.S. public education by examining the learning experiences that influence teachers’ and students’ spiritualties, affecting the construction and oppression of their identities. Consequently, the author examines how educators can decolonize the classroom, which functions as a political arena as well as a critical space of praxis in order to reveal how realities and knowledges are made nonexistent—an epistemic blindness and privilege.

Download or read book Sunset Over Belize written by Rick Byrem and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story begins with a scene off the coast of North Carolina in 1813 where a mystery began. From there, in present day Wyoming, two friends who have not seen each other in several years are off an excursion to cover a political meeting that Mike Hamilton’s boss has sent him to cover for the small town newspaper that he works for. At the venue, Mike meets a beautiful woman who seeks him out to share something, although the ‘something’ is pretty vague. She leaves an impression upon him, and a mysterious note, that will be hard for him to forget. A tragic event occurs that leaves Mike completely unprepared for what will come next. He shares with a television reporter what he heard and saw, but that story will only be aired once as it does not fit into the narrative of those that control such things. After being interviewed by the FBI, and told what he can and cannot say in public, he is contacted by Janice Felton, a world-renown financial icon, who invites him to her ranch in California for an interview. While there, he learns that she really is not interested in conducting an interview. Instead, she has an assignment of her own invention that she wants him to pursue. On a far-away island in the Caribbean, Leia Franklin, a woman who went to grade school with Mike, learns of his involvement with the event in Wyoming through the media attention surrounding it. While Mike is travelling to California for his interview with Janice Felton, Leia attempts to contact him. After his meeting with Janice Felton, they finally do connect, and something is kindled between them. Leaving California the following day, Mike is driving his old Volvo through the Sierra Nevada Mountains in an attempt to make a leisurely trip while deciding how to approach the assignment that Janice Felton had given him. He has no idea of where all of this will take him. Interlaced with the unfolding story in the present day, there are vignettes of other actors, both in the past and in the present, who will be converging with Mike as he embarks on the greatest adventure of his previously uneventful life to a place where he had never been before.
Download or read book Panhandle Dreams written by Gwen Parker Ames and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful “I Have a Dream” speech gained greater notoriety after his untimely death in the sixties. Millions of black Americans were motivated to grab a piece of King’s dream despite not knowing how to make it a reality. The novel Dream in the Panhandle paraphrases King’s famous speech to illuminate the complexities involved in a society’s movement toward equality. The story told through the writings of twelve-year-old Indigo Douglas is set in racially segregated Tallahassee, Florida the day after the news of King’s assassination came across the radio waves. Indigo’s parents' reaction to King’s death causes her to look beyond the world of her close–knit colored community to examine the lives of whites for the first time. Her examination begins with the affluent Whittner family who is her Aunt Sadie’s employer. As the nation grieves, deeply held family secrets are revealed and trigger chaos within the Douglas and Whittner families forcing them to see their commonality as well as their differences. Indigo’s father goes to prison as a result of his pro-King activism. Mr. Whittner risks his wealth as he reveals his Jewish heritage. Indigo’s mother embraces her previously unacknowledged bi-racial identity, while Mrs. Whittner remains vehemently intolerant. The contradictions between race, culture and power in this “coming of age story” become the canvas for Indigo to sketch a new generation’s concept of “King’s dream”.
