It fills a significant gap in the academic literature by providing a deep and thorough analysis of the process of population change in Polish FUAs over the past 30 years. In particular, this empirical research work addresses population growth and decline; the main components of population growth including fertility, mortality and migration; age composition; and the pace of population ageing. The book argues that the transformations of urban structures are triggered by second demographic transition (SDT) and suburbanization processes. Based on data from the Central Statistical Office, this comparative study on FUAs in Poland, which employs a division into core and commuting zones, reveals essential similarities and differences in population development, making it possible to construct a demographic typology of FUAs and investigate their spatial arrangements. In this Polish study, preliminary examination of macrostatistical data on rural/urban disparities revealed the limitations of dichotomous analysis. In a broad, in-depth approach designed to develop a realistic continuum of community types, researchers lived and worked in two field research stations for 2- to 3-year periods, and a network of 49 teachers and correspondents provided data from their village schools. In total, data about 7,000 students were investigated over a 12-year period. The results demonstrate the interrelationships among educational inequalities and social inequalities. They also demonstrate the need to analyze inequalities on national, regional, and local levels. The study includes 38 statistical tables, 7 diagrams and graphs, 9 maps, an appendix outlining the principles of point setting in formulating starting and achievement level indices, and a selected bibliography containing 19 Polish, 4 French, and 8 English items. The book demonstrates that rural areas are no longer simply characterized by an agricultural economy, and instead accommodate multiple complementary activities. It also touches upon two major changes that have taken place. The first is the process of rurbanization, which has led to the clear distinction between town and countryside becoming blurred: urban traits have penetrated rural areas, and rural traits have invaded towns. The second change is that rural areas are increasingly seen as multi-functional, providers not only of food and other natural resources but also locations for the generation of renewable energy (wind farms, solar farms, biogas) and regions for the preservation of biodiversity. These transformations have resulted in a new understanding and self-image of rural areas and their populations.
