Book Studies in Hebrew and Ugaritic Psalms

Download or read book Studies in Hebrew and Ugaritic Psalms written by Yitsḥaḳ Avishur and published by Magnes Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume offers a fresh analysis of a central problem of comparative Ugaritic-Biblical scholarship: the relationship between biblical psalms and Canaanite literature. A critical survey summarizes the various stages of comparative scholarship over more than fifty years. There follow the two principal parts of the book: the first concerns Hebrew psalms with affinities to Ugaritic literature, and the second Ugaritic psalms and prayers with affinities to Hebrew literature. A detailed analysis of the form, structure, themes and motifs of biblical texts, and a scrutiny of their verses, cola, phrases and vocabulary against the background of ancient Near East literature lead to the thesis that there is no justification for assuming that Canaanite psalms are found in the Bible, or that biblical literature and Ugaritic literature should be considered a single entity. It is alleged that affinities may be elucidated based on common thematic, linguistic and stylistic elements.

Download or read book Psalm Structures written by Paul R. Raabe and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1990-11-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identifies and describes the basic building blocks of a biblical psalm: the levels of colon, verse, strophe and stanza. In this study eleven psalms have been chosen with stanzas that are clearly demarcated by the presence of refrains. Seven of these are analysed thoroughly (Psalms 42-43, 46, 49, 56, 57, 59) and another four more briefly (Psalms 39, 67, 80, 99). This is a timely and closely argued statement of the importance of integrating structure and content in one's interpretation of a psalm.

Book Interpreting Hebrew Poetry

Download or read book Interpreting Hebrew Poetry written by David L. Petersen and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a convenient introduction to the unique aspects of interpreting the one-third of the Hebrew Bible that is in poetic form. Numerous are the occasions when a failure to distinguish poetry from prose in the Old Testament has resulted in flawed interpretation. Robert Lowth's Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews (1753, 1787), marked a turning point of major proportions by focusing on the importance of parallelism of lines. But new studies of the past decade now require significant adjustments to Lowth's analyses. Interpreting Hebrew Poetry offers an authoritative introduction to this discussion of parallelism, meter and rhythm, and poetic style. It also provides by way of example a poetic analysis of Deuteronomy 32, Isaiah 5:1-7, and Psalm 1.

Book Poetry in the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Poetry in the Hebrew Bible written by David E. Orton and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2000 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An appreciation of the form and artistry of texts is essential to the understanding of their content, and nowhere is this more evident than in the case of biblical poetry. But poetic form is also worthy of appreciation in its own right, and as the studies in this collection show, Hebrew poetry can be seen as a monument to the literary-artistic achievement of the ancients. Great strides have been made in the investigation of the form and structure of the biblical texts, and no new study of the Hebrew Bible can afford to ignore the fruitful work that has been done in this field. This useful collection presents in a handy format an ample harvest of research by many of the world's leading Hebrew Bible scholars who have published their work in the pages of "Vetus Testamentum" in recent decades. It provides a fascinating reflection of the continuing new discoveries of the richness of the biblical text, which informs the lively present-day study of the Hebrew Bible as world literature.

Download or read book Psalms and Prayers written by Eric Peels and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume focus on the interpretation of the Book of Psalms and comparable texts in the Hebrew Bible. A variety of methods is applied to the ancient texts. Some essays concentrate on composition and structure, others on redaction and context. It is of great interest to see that each approach has its strength and its limits: stressing the importance to read the Psalms with a multi-dimensional matrix of methods. By viewing the Psalms as prayers, and thus as expressions of both faith and despair, a perspective on the contents of the ancient hymns and their functions in daily life has been opened. This volume contains various incentives for future research.

Book According to my Righteousness

Download or read book According to my Righteousness written by Gert Kwakkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretation of the psalmist's assertions about their upright behaviour towards God or men in Psalms 7, 17, 18, 26, and 44. After a short introduction, the study presents a detailed analysis of Psalms 7, 17, 18, 26, and 44 (text, philology, exegesis). It evaluates previous views of the intention and setting of the psalmist’s claims regarding their upright behaviour, such as Beyerlin’s theory that the psalms involved were originally used as prayers in a cultic trial by ordeal. It presents a new hypothesis with respect to the purport of the claims. Its subject matter and method make this study particularly useful for all those studying the Hebrew Psalms. Furthermore, it deals with an important topic of the anthropology and theology of the Old Testament, viz. human righteousness towards God.
