Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Instability Mechanism and Disaster Prevention of the Jointed Rockmass

Download or read book Instability Mechanism and Disaster Prevention of the Jointed Rockmass written by Shuren Wang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discontinuities such as cracks, fissures, bedding planes, etc. resulting from different geological processes are commonly found in rock masses and often play a critical role in the initiation, propagation, and coalescence of new cracks due to stress redistribution caused by engineering activities and natural disturbances. It is challenging to determine the instability mechanism of jointed rock masses but it is vital for estimating instability disasters in jointed rock engineering.

Book Bifurcations Instabilities and Degradations in Geomaterials

Download or read book Bifurcations Instabilities and Degradations in Geomaterials written by Richard Wan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomaterials exhibit complex but rich mechanical behaviour with a variety of failure modes ranging from diffuse to localized deformation depending on stress, density, microstructure, and loading conditions. These failure modes are a result of an instability of material and/or geometric nature that can be studied within the framework of bifurcation theory. Degradation is another related phenomenon arising from cyclic loading, ageing, weathering, chemical attack, and capillary effects, among others. The methodology of analyzing the various types of instabilities is crucial in the adequate modelling and safe design of numerous problems in geomechanics. The present volume contains a sampling of enlarged versions of papers presented at the International Workshop on Bifurcation and Degradations in Geomaterials (IWBDG 2008) held in Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, May 28-31, 2008. These papers capture the state-of-the-art in the specialized field of geomechanics and contemporary approaches to solving the central issue of failure. Some engineering applications are presented in the areas of energy resource extraction and soil-machine interaction.

Book A Study of the Behavior of Soil and Rock Subjected to High Stress Levels

Download or read book A Study of the Behavior of Soil and Rock Subjected to High Stress Levels written by E. W. Brooker and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental investigation has been conducted to study the behavior of sand and clay under high stresses. The analytical work developed equations for the stress-strain properties of a medium composed of elastic equi-radii spheres in a face-centered cubic array. Theoretical relationships between the coefficient of earth pressure at rest, the angle of internal friction, and the coefficient of friction between the spheres were also derived. A special zero-lateral-strain device was developed for one-dimensional compression tests on sand and clay. The tests were carried to axial stresses of 3300 psi on four sands and 2200 psi on five remolded clays. The tests on sand demonstrated that the grain shape and gradation were as important as relative density in influencing the stress-strain properties. Controlled radial strain tests on the sand, with axial stresses up to 5000 psi, disclosed a failure envelope with a significant decrease in slope under the high pressures. Unloading of the sands and clays caused the coefficient of earth pressure at rest to increase and approach the coefficient of passive earth pressure. (Author).
