Book excerpt: As planners and designers have turned their attentions to the blighted, vacant areas of the city, the concept of "terrain vague," has become increasingly important. Terrain Vague seeks to explore the ambiguous spaces of the city -- the places that exist outside the cultural, social, and economic circuits of urban life. From vacant lots and railroad tracks, to more diverse interstitial spaces, this collection of original essays and cases presents innovative ways of looking at marginal urban space, with studies from the United States, Europe and the Middle East, from a diverse group of planners, geographers, and urban designers. Terrain Vague is a cooperative effort to redefine these marginal spaces as a central concept for urban planning and design. Presenting innovative ways of looking at marginal urban space, and focusing on its positive uses and aspects, the book will be of interest to all those wishing to understand our increasingly complex everyday surroundings, from planners, cultural theorists, and academics, to designers and architects.

Book Stitching the West Back Together

Download or read book Stitching the West Back Together written by Susan Charnley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As conservationists, ranchers, and forest workers join together to protect the wide open spaces, diverse habitats, and working landscapes upon which people, plants, and animals depend, a new vision of management is emerging in which the conservation of biodiversity, ecosystem integrity, and sustainable resource use are seen not as antithetical, but as compatible, even symbiotic goals. This book explores that expanded, inclusive vision of environmentalism as it delves into the history and evolution of Western land use policy and of the working landscapes themselves.

Book Contested Urban Spaces

Download or read book Contested Urban Spaces written by Ulrike Capdepón and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the urban space as a starting point for thinking about practices, actors, narratives, and imaginations within articulations of memory. The social protests and mobilizations against colonial statues are examples of how past injustice and violence keep on shaping debates in the present. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the contributions to this book focus on the in/visibility and affective power of monuments and traces through political, activist, and artistic contestations in different geographical settings. They show that memories are shaped in contact zones, most often in conflict and within hierarchical social relations. The notion of decentered memory shifts the perspective to relationships between imperial centers and margins, remembrance and erasure, nationalistic tendencies and migration. This plurality of connections emerges around unfinished histories of violence and resistance that are reflected in monuments and traces.

Book excerpt: Chromatographic & Electrophoretic Techniques, Fourth Edition, Volume II: Zone Electrophoresis presents the methods of zone electrophoresis. This book discusses all the techniques that can be applied routinely. Organized into 17 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the fundamental principle of zone electrophoresis. This text then examines the apparatus in common use for paper electrophoresis and discusses paper electrophoresis at low voltages. Other chapters describe the apparatus that combines several advantages resulting from high voltage paper electrophoresis and thin-layer chromatography. This book discusses as well the advantages of cellulose acetate membrane filter paper as a supporting medium for zone electrophoresis. The final chapter deals with preparative acrylamide gel electrophoresis on a small scale, which may involve either continuous electrophoretic elution or extraction of the RNA from zones cut out of the gel. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, clinical chemists, clinicians, technicians, biophysicists, pathologists, and medical researchers.

Book Territorial Fragilities in Cyprus

Download or read book Territorial Fragilities in Cyprus written by Alice Buoli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors present a combination of research-by-design, place-based, and policy-oriented approaches to the territorial fragilities of Nicosia. Nicosia, in Cyprus, is a city divided. Since 1974, a 180 km long Buffer Zone has separated the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Republic of Cyprus (RoC). This "open wound" cuts through the city's historical center, crossing the Venetian walls, a key cultural heritage asset, and impacting the city's spatial and cultural identity. Outcomes of an inter-doctoral research initiative, this edited book documents the local realities of the divided city and tests scenarios and spatial patterns of intervention to cope with the partition through the enhancement of local cultural heritage. The book targets an academic audience, architects, urban planners, heritage preservation professionals and policymakers, providing a transferable research method relevant to those approaching a complex, fragile, and contested "border territory".

Book URBAN CORPORIS The City and the Skin

Download or read book URBAN CORPORIS The City and the Skin written by Mickeal Milocco Borlini and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Urban Corporis volume, ?The city and the skin?, we asked the authors to read, define and interpret the role of the skin as a facade, as a protection, as a compositional image of urban revelation. Without formal restrictions, without ethical preconceptions: the skin as part of the building designed to mediate the relationship. The architectural skin, understood as the technological system of delimitation between architectural space and unbuilt environment, can be analyzed as a boundary system between interior and exterior, the most evident expression of the identity of an artifact. In this dual role of border and interface, receptive as active, the skin of an architecture (seen also through art) is charged with a double value: an element of covering and protection and, at the same time, a tool of relationship and interface, in fact, towards the external world.

Book Handbook of Photomask Manufacturing Technology

Download or read book Handbook of Photomask Manufacturing Technology written by Syed Rizvi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the semiconductor industry attempts to increase the number of functions that will fit into the smallest space on a chip, it becomes increasingly important for new technologies to keep apace with these demands. Photomask technology is one of the key areas to achieving this goal. Although brief overviews of photomask technology exist in the literature, the Handbook of Photomask Manufacturing Technology is the first in-depth, comprehensive treatment of existing and emerging photomask technologies available. The Handbook of Photomask Manufacturing Technology features contributions from 40 internationally prominent authors from industry, academia, government, national labs, and consortia. These authors discuss conventional masks and their supporting technologies, as well as next-generation, non-optical technologies such as extreme ultraviolet, electron projection, ion projection, and x-ray lithography. The book begins with an overview of the history of photomask development. It then demonstrates the steps involved in designing, producing, testing, inspecting, and repairing photomasks, following the sequences observed in actual production. The text also includes sections on materials used as well as modeling and simulation. Continued refinements in the photomask-making process have ushered in the sub-wavelength era in nanolithography. This invaluable handbook synthesizes these refinements and provides the tools and possibilities necessary to reach the next generation of microfabrication technologies.
