Book Status of the Fermilab Electron Cooling Recirculation Project

Download or read book Status of the Fermilab Electron Cooling Recirculation Project written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electron cooling project requires a high current electron beam with high reliability to provide the consistent cooling required by Fermilab's physics program. We are using a 5URE-2 Pelletron to provide this beam. The program is developing a high current DC recirculating electron beam with high recovery efficiency. The present layout uses 2 sets of tubes with acceleration, a 180{sup o} bend, and deceleration for a total of about 10 meters of beam line. The project's nominal operating parameters are .5 A at 4.3 MeV with the emission cathode immersed in a 200-600 G magnetic field.

Book Fermilab Accelerator

Download or read book Fermilab Accelerator written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fermilab accelerator has been in operation since 1972. The first operation was at 200 GeV, although the energy was soon raised to a nominal value of 300 GeV. Since July 1975, 400 GeV has been the normal energy. The machine was operated at 500 GeV in May 1976. The accelerator system is composed of a 750-kV Cockcroft--Walton, a 200-MeV linac, an 8-GeV to 15-Hertz booster, and a 500-GeV main ring. The linac injects one pulse into the booster and the booster injects the 8-GeV pulse into the main ring, each using single-turn injection. This process is repeated 13 times to fill the main ring circumference before accelertion begins. A switchyard system splits the extracted beam to 6 different external targets. There is one internal target area with 3 possible targets. The linac can also deliver a 66-MeV beam to a neutron cancer therapy facility and a 200-MeV proton beam to a radiography experiment. A project is being initiated to study electron cooling of 200-MeV protons. Upon successful cooling of protons, studies will begin on the cooling and accumulation of antiprotons. The antiprotons would be injected into the main ring and simultaneously accelerated with protons to produce antiproton-proton colliding beams. Work is in progress at Fermilab on the construction of a 1000-GeV superconducting Energy Doubler/Saver to be installed in the present main-ring tunnel. With both the main ring and energy doubler in the same tunnel, it is obvious proton--proton colliding beams will be possible. The complete system of 1000-GeV fixed-target physics, 250 GeV (main ring) x 1000 GeV (doubler) proton--proton physics and 1000 GeV x 1000 GeV proton--antiproton physics in the doubler has been named the Tevatron.

Book Status of the Fermilab Recycler

Book excerpt: The author presents the current operational status of the Fermilab Recycler Ring. Using a mix of stochastic and electron cooling, we prepare antiproton beams for the Fermilab Tevatron Collider program. Included are discussion of stashing and cooling performance, operational scenarios, and collider performance.

Book Summary of Fermilab s Recycler Electron Cooler Operation and Studies

Download or read book Summary of Fermilab s Recycler Electron Cooler Operation and Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fermilab's Recycler ring was used as a storage ring for accumulation and subsequent manipulations of 8 GeV antiprotons destined for the Tevatron collider. To satisfy these missions, a unique electron cooling system was designed, developed and successfully implemented. The most important features that distinguish the Recycler cooler from other existing electron coolers are its relativistic energy, 4.3 MV combined with 0.1-0.5 A DC beam current, a weak continuous longitudinal magnetic field in the cooling section, 100 G, and lumped focusing elsewhere. With the termination of the Tevatron collider operation, so did the cooler. In this article, we summarize the experience of running this unique machine.

Book Fermilab 4 3 MeV Electron Cooler

Download or read book Fermilab 4 3 MeV Electron Cooler written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Recycler Electron Cooler (REC) was the first cooler working at a relativistic energy (gamma = 9.5). It was successfully developed in 1995-2004 and was in operation at Fermilab in 2005-2011, providing cooling of antiprotons in the Recycler ring. After introducing the physics of electron cooling and the REC system, this paper describes measurements carried out to tune the electron beam and optimize its cooling properties. In particular, we discuss the cooling strategy adopted for maximizing the collider integrated luminosity.

Book Magnetic Shielding of an Electron Beamline in a Hadron Accelerator Enclosure

Download or read book Magnetic Shielding of an Electron Beamline in a Hadron Accelerator Enclosure written by C. W. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fermilab Electron Cooling Project requires the operation of a 4.34 MeV electron beam in the same enclosure that houses the 120, 150 GeV Main Injector. Effective shielding of the magnetic fields from the ramped electrical busses and local static fields is necessary to maintain the high beam quality and recirculation efficiency required by the electron cooling system. This paper discusses the operational tolerances and the design of the beamline shielding, bus design, and bus shielding as well as experimental results from the prototype and final installation.
