Book Stability of Low Embankments on Soft Clay Part 3 Centrifuge Tests and Numerical Analysis

Download or read book Stability of Low Embankments on Soft Clay Part 3 Centrifuge Tests and Numerical Analysis written by M. S. S. Almeida and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centrifuge tests have been conducted to study the behaviour of embankments on soft clay and to provide quantitative data against which to test the predictive power of the Cambridge CRISP program. Soft clay foundations were prepared with an overconsolidated crust over normally consolidated kaolin clay. Methods of conducting site investigation tests on this clay have been described in Parts 1 and 2. Tests were performed both with embankments constructed during flight in stages and in a single lift to failure, with measures of pore pressures at selected locations, and displacements using a marker grid. Some tests were performed with the clay foundation strengthened using granular columns. An embankment built in a single life, on unstrengthened clay failed at a height of 11.6m before inducing failure. Heights of 13m were achieved with stage constructed embankments on strengthened foundations, but without any failure occurring. Unexpected large lateral displacements were measured in unstrengthened clay during consolidation periods. Large displacement increases are a good indicator of factor of safety below about 1.3. At corresponding loading the use of strengthened foundations decreased lateral and vertical movements by about 50.

Book Stability of Low Embankments on Soft Clay Part 2 Studies of Vane and Penetrometer Tests During Centrifuge Flight

Download or read book Stability of Low Embankments on Soft Clay Part 2 Studies of Vane and Penetrometer Tests During Centrifuge Flight written by M. S. S. Almeida and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correct assessment of soil parameters in centrifuge tests requires these to be measured during flight, and small vane and penetrometer devices have been developed for this purpose. The vane is fixed in position, but the penetrometer can traverse the length of the model, allowing tests to be made a different locations. A programme of tests has been conducted in the centrifuge at 100 g investigating the use of these test methods in consolidated beds of clay. Rate effects are studied for both types of tests and correlations made between cone resistance and undrained shear strength measured by the vane. A number of penetration tests were also performed to show the progressive increase in strength of a clay bed under staged embankment construction.

Book Stability of Low Embankments on Soft Clay Part 1 Tests with Centrifuge Vane and Penetrometers on Clay Cakes in a Normal Gravity Field

Download or read book Stability of Low Embankments on Soft Clay Part 1 Tests with Centrifuge Vane and Penetrometers on Clay Cakes in a Normal Gravity Field written by M. S. S. Almeida and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small vane and penetrometer devices have been developed to measured soil properties in centrifuge models during flight. Early models of these devices, and subsequent improved devices which allow separation of shaft friction from cone or vane resistance, are described, and results presented from tests on consolidated clay cakes in a normal gravity field. A small piezocone has also been developed. Vane results are shown to be strongly influenced by vane diameter, but not vane height, by elapsed time between insertion and rotation of the vane and by the rate of rotation. From these results a vane size of 18 mm diameter by 14 mm high is recommended with a rotation rate of 72/min. A penetration rate of 5 mm/s is found to be suitable for a 10 mm diameter cone although in fact penetration rate was found to have little influence on the measured cone resistance. A consistent relationship could not be established between cone resistance and vane strength. The ratio of cone resistance to vane strength was found to increase with increasing overconsolidation ratio, but was also found to depend on various other factors such as vane and cone sizes and testing rates. The values also differed considerably between the two clays used, Gault clay and kaolin.

Book Total Stress Versus Effective Stress Stability Analysis of Embankments on Soft Clay

Download or read book Total Stress Versus Effective Stress Stability Analysis of Embankments on Soft Clay written by Steven Craig Boyce and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the use of two types of stability analysis, i.e. total stress and effective stress, for evaluating the factor of safety of embankments constructed on soft clay. Three classes of stability problems are defined based upon the drainage conditions during construction and shear. The use of both types of analyses for each class of stability is discussed. The factors of safety computed for both types of analyses are compared for three situations: eight case studies of actual embankment failures; variation with embankment height for seven embankments; and the long term stability for two hypothetical embankments.

Book Geosynthetic Encased Columns for Soft Soil Improvement

Download or read book Geosynthetic Encased Columns for Soft Soil Improvement written by Márcio Almeida and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geosynthetic encased column (GEC) is a relatively recent method developed for soft soil improvement. The method was firstly introduced as a concept in the 1980s and first practical applications started in the 1990s. GECs have been widely used in some parts of the world for the last three decades. However, there is no book in the literature summarizing the knowledge accumulated during this period in relation to this soft ground improvement technique. The purpose of this book is to provide readers with the GEC fundamentals and practical applications. Chapter 1 presents the general principles of this ground improvement technique including the methods used for GEC installation and how the material properties may be selected. Chapter 2 presents the design methods, thus settlement calculations by means of analytical methods and stability calculations by limit equilibrium methods are explained in detail. Chapter 3 presents calculation examples illustrating the usual steps to be done for both service limit state and ultimate limit state designs. Then field performances exemplifying practical applications of the GEC technique are presented in Chapter 4 for some case histories. Following numerical analyses, often used in design to complement analytical methods, are presented in Chapter 5. Annexes I and II at the end contain the charts developed to perform settlement calculations. The book combines the experiences of four authors with different academic and industry backgrounds to describe GEC design and performance. It is aimed at civil engineers in general, particularly geotechnical engineers, either working in design or in practice, at graduate students, and at senior undergraduate students.
