The first application aimed to identify red colorants on Japanese woodblock prints by novel sampling and analytical methods. The inception of this project was in partnership with the Portland Art Museum (PAM) and the 2018 exhibition entitled Suzuki Harunobu and the Culture of Color. The work herein developed a soft mechanical sampling technique for the acquisition of micrometer-sized colorant particles from the surface of 18th century woodblock prints. In Chapters 3 and 4, the sampling method is introduced and validated, and the collected samples were analyzed by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The analysis was aided by the implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA) which matches the spectral contributions of the samples to identify the components present. In Chapter 5, the results of a study of artworks attributed to Suzuki Harunobu in the PAM's permanent collection are presented. Through a multi-analytical approach, the palette of red colorants in the collection was established. This work provides technical information and historical context to the practice of commercial printmaking in late-18th century Japan. The second application, presented in Chapter 7, aimed to develop a sensor for the detection of active corrosion products on the surface of metal sculpture. This work provides the preliminary synthesis and characterization of a carbon-quantum dot functionalized polymeric hydrogel (bCQD-hydrogel). The bCQD-hydrogels harness the fluorescence properties of carbon quantum dots by incorporating them into a flexible polymer network. This soft material is then demonstrated to be sensitive to soluble metal ions, the first indicators of active metal corrosion. Finally, preliminary data is presented demonstrating the use of these materials on metal surfaces. These two projects, while seemingly unrelated, represent a breadth of research focus and illustrate the expansive applications of conservation science.

These themes are naturally wider than what at first might be considered as artworks and archaeological artefacts and the topics include pigments, paintings, ceramics, glass, sculpture and patination / corrosion, textiles, industrial archaeology, the degradation and preservation of biomaterials, mummies and human skeletal remains. An interesting feature is the inclusion of modern case studies which describe specific problems and approaches to the Raman spectral analysis of items important to our cultural heritage. The text is prefaced with an introduction to the important parameters used in nondestructive Raman measurements and also highlights some future applications based upon novel miniaturised instrumentation for in-field studies and potential screening work which will identify specimens which would repay further studies in the laboratory. An attempt is made to give a snapshot of the state-of-the-art evolution since the beginning of the technique (1970s) and to point out potential further development. The book is co-edited by three international experts with many years' experience in the application of Raman spectroscopy to artworks, archaeological artefacts and in the investigation of materials and sites for cultural heritage preservation and each editor has undertaken to write individual chapters and different topics personally. The adopted approach is designed to convey the sort of information which has become available from the adoption of analytical Raman spectroscopy to different problems in the field of cultural heritage preservation through the spectral interrogation of artefacts and how the interpretation of the spectral data can assist museum curators, archaeologists and cultural heritage historians in the preservation and conservation of ancient materials and sites : a particular advantage in this respect is the ability of Raman spectroscopy to determine –generally in a strictly noninvasive procedure - at the laboratory or on-site with mobile instruments, the presence of both organic and inorganic components in a particular specimen together nondestructively without any chemical and mechanical pretreatment being undertaken, which is an essential requirement for rare and valuable samples . An important aside from this work is the means of spectral identification of ongoing biodeterioration and biological colonisation in specimens in storage and the effects of environmental deterioration such as humidity and temperature upon their integrity.

Given the complexity of materials in paintings and the convergence of various disciplines, a methodological approach for nvestigations of paintings is based on art historical, curatorial, aesthetic, technical and scientific evaluation. In this book sophisticated digital and analytical techniques are reviewed for the identification of materials (pigments, binders, varnishes, adhesives) and the physical characteristics of paintings such as brushstrokes, craquelure and canvas weaves. This book presents an updated overview of both non-invasive and micro-invasive techniques that enable the material characterization of paintings. The materials constituting a painting are reviewed, as are ways that changes in materials over time can provide insights into chronology and physical history. State-of the art digital metods including multi and hyper-spectral imaging and computational approaches to data treatment will be presented. Book excerpt: The key concepts of data management systems that are applied to combinatorial and high-throughput chemical systems may also be applied to assist with answering questions involving conservation and cultural heritage materials. The chapter begins with an overview of conservation and explains what conservation is, why it is important, and how it is implemented for the preservation of cultural materials. The inherent value of most cultural materials imposes certain limitations on the types of analytical approaches that may be employed during analysis. An emphasis on noninvasive, nondestructive or microsampling is important to minimize the impact of analytical methodologies upon the artefact that is being studied, and multivariate approaches can maximize the information that may be derived from an analytical technique. In a review of nondestructive analysis and testing of museum objects, Adriaens (Spectrochimica Acta Part B: Atomic Spectroscopy 2005, 60 (12), 1503–1516) reiterates an important conservation principle, i.e. that we should aim for the maximization of information with a minimization of consumed volume of sample. Consistent with other applications in the fields of remote sensing, analysis of metadata and high-throughput or combinatorial approaches, methods for visualization of complex data, multivariate analysis and processing of high volumes of data, advanced data compression using data transformation and cluster analysis for data exploration and mining or pattern recognition are utilized. Cultural heritage studies are often directed at specific compositional and sample relational questions, due to the fact that little documentation about the specific preparation of the artefact exists. Also, because the analyst is dealing with natural materials with inherent sample variability, there is often little a priori knowledge of the sample set, so unsupervised approaches are useful for data exploration. This chapter presents a number of case studies that are used to illustrate the use of multivariate analysis (MVA) and chemometric approaches in studies of cultural artefacts and works of art. By deriving correlations, trends, clusters trajectory and anomalies or outliers in nonspatial and spatial data sets, a number of specific conservation issues are addressed. Firstly, in a multi-year study, the surface mineralogical profile of Australian Aboriginal Rock Art petroglyphs was examined using visible–near infrared reflectance spectroscopy and principal component analysis (PCA). A Cypriot pottery collection repaired with adhesives was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and further historical information was revealed using PCA. The pigments and binding media used to decorate an Egyptian sarcophagus were examined with Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), and attribution studies of an Italian renaissance painting and imaging of ochre pigments using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental imaging are presented.
