Download or read book Special Method in Geography written by Charles A. McMurry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Method in Geography: From the Third Through, the Eighth Grade The purpose of this book is to outline a complete course of study in geography from the third through the eighth grade. The character and arrangement of the materials selected for each grade are discussed at length and the method of treating topics illustrated. The characteristic points to be noted are (1), the gradual movement from the home outward; (2), the strong concentration of study, first upon North America and second upon Europe; and (3), the selection of types as centres for the organization of materials. In laying out the course of study in Chapter XI, the points of correlation between geography and other studies are marked out, and the list of books at the close is designed as a direct help to teachers in realizing this course of study. This is one of a series of Special Methods, all aiming at the same general purpose. The others are as follows: - 1. The Special Method in Primary Reading and Oral Work with Stories. 2. The Special Method in the Reading of Complete English Classics, from fourth to eighth grade. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Type Studies From the Geography of the United States

Download or read book Type Studies From the Geography of the United States written by Charles A. McMurry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Type Studies From the Geography of the United States: 1st Series This little book is designed to outline and illustrate a plan for the study of geography in third and fourth grades. After a closer survey of home objects in third grade, it lays the scene of operations for the fourth grade in the Mississippi Valley. A series of type studies of great fullness and detail is worked out, with the aim of making geography thoroughly instructive and stimulating to children. The "Pioneer History Stories of the Mississippi Valley" are used in the same grade and cover exactly the same area as the geography topics, so that the relation between history and geography is intimate and many-sided. The natural science topics treated in the grade are also largely suggested by the geography and history. This enables us, therefore, to illustrate more fully the plan of concentration of studies discussed in the "General Method." This book is one of a series of Special Methods, treating of the selection and quality of the best materials furnished by the separate studies, and points out the particular application of general principles to these materials. The others are as follows: Special Method in Literature and History, especially the oral treatment of stories in primary and intermediate grades. The history course for grammar grades is also discussed and outlined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Manual of Geography and Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Geography and Language Classic Reprint written by Charles Eben Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geography and Language Although, with most children, much Geographical work may be done earlier, it is thought safer to recommend its formal introduction with the first of the fourth year. It is presumed, however, that all Geographic knowledge required for a proper understanding of - the reading prescribed for the earlier grades, will have received careful attention. This, with us, will include, in the second grade, Stories of the United States, and Big and Little People of Other Lands; in the third grade, Great Americans for Little Americans, Stories of Colonial Children, Seven Little Sisters, and Each and All. The last two are especially used for their Geographical value. To this add the work outlined under Home Geography in this book and it may be safely assumed that pupils will be quite familiar with the meaning and use of globes and maps. This, of course, means not only the finished globe, but also the slated globe which, properly used, has in its use the highest degree of helpfulness. The wall maps, with all the lower grades, should always be hung on the north wall to insure less confusion as to direction. For this reason it is well, some times, to lay the map on the floor and let the children gather round it. They must be led to see that north is not always up and that south is not always down. Let no place of any significance in any lesson be passed without being definitely located both on the map, or globe, and actually in direction and comparative distance from the school room. From what is stated above, it will be seen that third year children will need to understand maps and this envolves, not only relative position, but actual distances; hence, they should learn the meaning of the scale of a map. For this purpose, take some object as the title page of a book, small enough to be outlined in its true measurement, placing all important objects or characters on the outline in proper position, not by guess but by careful measurement. When this is understood, take some object, as the schoolroom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Problem Method in Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Problem Method in Geography Classic Reprint written by Harold W. Fairbanks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem Method in Geography The chief aim of the Problem Method is to teach the children to think their Geography instead of memorizing it. From time immemorial general geography has been largely descriptive and school geography has been no exception. As long as the idea persisted that geography was essentially a description of the earth and man, or the earth as the home of man, so long was it impossible that children should be taught to acquire their geography by any other means than the memory. But little by little our conceptions of geography have changed. We are now coming to see how much more there is to the subject when we make the relation between facts rather than the facts themselves the object of our study. We now study the earth and man in their relation to each other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
