Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever had a Christmas gathering or family vacation that was way too interesting? Have you had a family member in the military or deployed to a combat zone? Have you struggled with your Christian faith? Have you or a family member faced cancer or another serious illness? If so, you are not alone, although you may sometimes feel like it. Author Terry A. Roberts has felt that way. He shares his experiences in his memoir, Youve Got to Be Somewhere. This slice of Americana, sometimes hilarious and sometimes starkly intense, recalls Robertss idyllic childhood, filled with baseball, Boy Scouts, and outdoor boondoggles. Life later finds him as a single Baptist minister in the South and Midwest while also serving as a marine. He saw combat in the first Gulf War, later as a US Navy/Marine Corps chaplain, and once again during the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. He was later diagnosed with cancer, a fact that changed his life forever. Through it all, his faith in God has helped him through the difficult times while making him more appreciative of the good in his life. Now he tells the story of his truly American lifean odyssey of humor, tough issues, and faith.

Book excerpt: Off Somewhere, Z.Z. Boone's debut story collection, is populated by characters who seek recognition and empowerment in a world that has suddenly become baffling. The tone of these eighteen stories ranges from a humorous account of a young student obsessed with an unobtainable fast-food worker, to a cartoonist forced to face the fact that brotherly hatred runs deeper than brotherly love, to a young woman hoping a homemade cake will keep her parents' marriage intact. The characters are, for the most part, ordinary people driven to exceptional actions.

Download or read book Somewhere Sometime Somehow written by JulesVerne Orion and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-09-29 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems and short stories are arranged in chronological order as they were inspired by a long-term love affair and written from 1989 to 2007. For the perceptive reader one can trace the ups and downs of our relationship. These 18 years were filled with love and passion. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. These inspired poems were written mostly during the first ten years. As it became obvious that my dream would never come true, the inspiration dwindled and fewer poems were written in later years. The heartbreaking part of this 18 year love affair is that I am not sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my unconditional deep love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry, but I never knew what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I think and hope not. I was convinced that she loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a love that I had only dreamed possible. Each image carefully placed in this book carries a very special meaning for the poem and for our love journey. Even the clock photo carries a meaning related to the untimely death of US. Each word is carefully chosen to convey my feelings. While I tried to express my love in poetic words, there was an enormous amount left unsaid. I can only hope you find meaning and joy in the thoughts and feelings these words convey to you. A fuller story of this passionate love affair will be unfolded in an upcoming book.

Book excerpt: The journey to finding God is different for every one of us. It doesn't matter who you call God. He calls on us to serve, to love unconditionally. I am a survivor because God chose me to be. I learned to find peace in the storm. My journey does not look like yours, yet when I was willing to stand still, I could find peace because God found me right where I was. How many times have we all asked, "Why me?" at one time or another in our lives? Many years ago, after sharing my story with a trusted friend, she commented, "That's a lot." I replied, "It is, and what I don't understand is, why me?" Her response has helped me through some of the darkest days of my life. She said, "Why not you? God has a plan for you." Putting all of it in a book for the world to read was not my plan; it was God's. I have shared my story with many others over the years, and every time at least one person comes to me afterward and tells me how my story has inspired them to keep moving forward. So before I speak, I pray that one person will hear something in my account to give them a little hope, a spark to make a decision, or encourage them not to give up. I have done my work well if my story saves one person from the darkness and hopelessness of abuse, violence, fear, shame, defeat, or addiction.

Book Sand Talk

Book excerpt: A paradigm-shifting book in the vein of Sapiens that brings a crucial Indigenous perspective to historical and cultural issues of history, education, money, power, and sustainability—and offers a new template for living. As an indigenous person, Tyson Yunkaporta looks at global systems from a unique perspective, one tied to the natural and spiritual world. In considering how contemporary life diverges from the pattern of creation, he raises important questions. How does this affect us? How can we do things differently? In this thoughtful, culturally rich, mind-expanding book, he provides answers. Yunkaporta’s writing process begins with images. Honoring indigenous traditions, he makes carvings of what he wants to say, channeling his thoughts through symbols and diagrams rather than words. He yarns with people, looking for ways to connect images and stories with place and relationship to create a coherent world view, and he uses sand talk, the Aboriginal custom of drawing images on the ground to convey knowledge. In Sand Talk, he provides a new model for our everyday lives. Rich in ideas and inspiration, it explains how lines and symbols and shapes can help us make sense of the world. It’s about how we learn and how we remember. It’s about talking to everyone and listening carefully. It’s about finding different ways to look at things. Most of all it’s about a very special way of thinking, of learning to see from a native perspective, one that is spiritually and physically tied to the earth around us, and how it can save our world. Sand Talk include 22 black-and-white illustrations that add depth to the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A comprehensive and entertaining historical and botanical review, providing an enjoyable and cognitive read.”—Nature The foods we eat have a deep and often surprising past. From almonds and apples to tea and rice, many foods that we consume today have histories that can be traced out of prehistoric Central Asia along the tracks of the Silk Road to kitchens in Europe, America, China, and elsewhere in East Asia. The exchange of goods, ideas, cultural practices, and genes along these ancient routes extends back five thousand years, and organized trade along the Silk Road dates to at least Han Dynasty China in the second century BC. Balancing a broad array of archaeological, botanical, and historical evidence, Fruit from the Sands presents the fascinating story of the origins and spread of agriculture across Inner Asia and into Europe and East Asia. Through the preserved remains of plants found in archaeological sites, Robert N. Spengler III identifies the regions where our most familiar crops were domesticated and follows their routes as people carried them around the world. With vivid examples, Fruit from the Sands explores how the foods we eat have shaped the course of human history and transformed cuisines all over the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, Paul Morris went to Angola as a reluctant conscript soldier, where he experienced the fear and filth of war. Twenty-five years later, in 2012, Paul returned to Angola, and embarked on a 1500-kilometre cycle trip, solo and unsupported, across the country. His purpose was to see Angola in peacetime, to replace the war map in his mind with a more contemporary peace map, to exorcise the ghosts of war once and for all. Shifting skilfully between present and past, Back to Angola chronicles Paul’s epic journey, from Cuito Cuanavale to the remnants of his unit’s base in northern Namibia, and vividly recreates his experiences as a young soldier caught up in a war in a foreign land. Along the way, the book provides thought-provoking reflections on childhood, masculinity, violence, trauma and friendship. Back to Angola is an honest, intelligent and deeply moving account of war and its effects on an individual mind, a generation of people, and the psyche and landscape of a country.
