Book Small Changes Big Results

Download or read book Small Changes Big Results written by Ellie Krieger and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-start, simple-to-maintain, scientifically sound, and eminently usable twelve-week program of small steps on the road to better health Small Changes, Big Results is not about cutting all the carbohydrates out of your diet. Or replacing every single gram of sugar with omega-3 fatty acids. It’s not about doing one hundred sit-ups a day, or getting on the treadmill whenever you have a free second. In fact, it’s not about any of the total lifestyle-replacement gimmicks—whether diet, exercise, or pop psychology—that have swept our culture in recent years, putting untold millions of Americans on the risky roller coaster of success and failure that defines fad diets and programs. Not here. Small Changes, Big Results is about reality—the reality of what you can do, the reality of what you want to do, and the reality of what works. It’s about introducing a series of small changes each week for three months in the three core areas of diet and nutrition; exercise and fitness; and emotional wellness. For each of the twelve weeks, nutritionist Ellie Krieger introduces a very finite, completely practical action plan for the week—and not only are these tasks incredibly doable, they’re in fact so accessible that it’s tough not to be inspired. For example, in Week 1 the nutrition task is merely to go shopping, buy some healthful pantry items, and start keeping track of what you eat; the exercise consists of taking three twenty-minute walks; and the wellness aspect is to do a five-minute breathing exercise. That’s it. And it doesn’t really get any harder. But these small changes do in fact lead to big results. At the end of twelve weeks, a totally unhealthy diet has been overhauled: armed with easy, delicious recipes and tips, you’ve removed unhelpful munchies and replaced them with healthful snacking, you’ve cut down on lethal trans fats while adding beneficial fat choices, you’ve replaced refined grains with whole grains, you’re eating more fish and less red meat, and so forth. Yet you’ve never been forbidden to eat a single thing: instead of prohibiting entire food groups, Ellie categorizes foods as Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely—and now you should be eating more from the Usually choices, less from the Rarely category. Furthermore, you’ve integrated physical activity into your life, and you’ve developed a set of tools to help you deal with stress—you’re not only eating better, but you’re also exercising better and feeling better. The beauty of this program is that none of these action steps is remotely intimidating, because they’re not a full immersion into a totally new lifestyle. Instead, it’s a series of incremental changes—removing bad habits one by one, while at the same time adding good ones. There’s nothing to scare you off—on the contrary, here’s a whole book full of small changes that produce big results.

Download or read book The small BIG written by Steve J. Martin and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point today you will have to influence or persuade someone - your boss, a co-worker, a customer, client, spouse, your kids, or even your friends. What is the smallest change you can make to your request, proposal or situation that will lead to the biggest difference in the outcome? In The small BIG, three heavyweights from the world of persuasion science and practice -- Steve Martin, Noah Goldstein and Robert Cialdini -- describe how, in today's information overloaded and stimulation saturated world, increasingly it is the small changes that you make that lead to the biggest differences. In the last few years more and more research - from fields such as neuroscience, cognitive psychology, social psychology, and behavioral economics - has helped to uncover an even greater understanding of how influence, persuasion and behavior change happens. Increasingly we are learning that it is not information per se that leads people to make decisions, but the context in which that information is presented. Drawing from extensive research in the new science of persuasion, the authors present lots of small changes (over 50 in fact) that can bring about momentous shifts in results. It turns out that anyone can significantly increase his or her ability to influence and persuade others, not by informing or educating people into change but instead by simply making small shifts in approach that link to deeply felt human motivations.

Book Get Healthy Get Happy

Download or read book Get Healthy Get Happy written by Julie Isphording and published by Clerisy Press. This book was released on 2010-03-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small change adds up. Put those dimes, nickels, and pennies into a jar every day, and watch the dollars grow over time. Make small changes in daily habits -- meals and snacks, relationships, work, workouts, leisure -- and a much healthier, happier, and better person emerges. In this succinct, accessible book, sportswoman and motivational speaker Julie Isphording shows how to make it happen. For example, says the author, replacing a soft drink with water at just one meal -- say, lunch -- increases water consumption by 30 gallons per year while avoiding 50,000 calories of carbonated sugar and $500 in costs. And that isn't counting the psychological benefits of healthier consumption. Divided into five chapters covering mental attitude, healthy lifestyle, exercise, diet, and inspirations for staying the course, Get Healthy, Get Happy offers a simple, smart program for busy people who want to make life changes but don't think they have the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research shows that vocabulary is the best support for students’ comprehension of narrative and information texts. Often, vocabulary instruction focuses on a few target words in specific texts. However, to understand the many new words in complex texts students need to know how words work. This book, written by an award-winning authority on reading instruction, shows teachers how to make small changes to teach more words and also how words work. Many of these small changes involve enrichments to existing vocabulary practices, such as word walls and conversations with students. Each chapter includes descriptions of teachers’ implementation of small changes to support big gains in students’ vocabulary. This book, which has sufficient depth in research and theory for graduate and undergraduate courses in vocabulary instruction, also offers practical steps that K–8 teachers can use in any reading program to help all students grow their vocabulary. Teaching Words and How They Work shows teachers how to: Identify the most important word families to teach. Teach students to use opening text as background knowledge for comprehending the rest of the text. Use word walls with more purpose and greater student engagement. Select the right words to teach from new information texts. Better understand limitations of leveled texts and how to adjust. Use assets and address challenges to support English learners. Book Small Changes in Teaching Big Results in Learning

Download or read book Small Changes in Teaching Big Results in Learning written by John F. Fanselow and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small Changes in Teaching Big Results in Learning is a new resource book aimed at both novice and experienced teachers of English as another language. It can be used in formal/informal teacher education groups or by individual teachers. The approach is simple and effective: Videos introduce new activities and types of feedback. You read more about the activities you saw in action. You try them out in your own classes. As you master the activities and types of feedback introduced in this book, you will be able to move from teaching as a ritual to teaching as discovery. You will decrease the time you spend making lesson plans, quizzes and tests, looking for the ideal syllabus, and preparing worksheets and handouts and, as a result, you will have more time to analyze transcriptions and video clips of what you and your students are doing. "In Small Changes in Teaching Big Results in learning, Fanselow teaches us, in the chapters and the videos, some incredibly powerful lessons. In his typically sensitive yet bold and direct way, he teaches us to pay attention to the emotions of characters, and our own feelings, as well as students' discomfort and the value of rehearsal and scores of other changes along the way. This is a new and important book for educators everywhere!" Ann Lieberman, Professor Emeritus, Teachers College, Columbia University Past President, American Educational Research Association "John Fanselow, the gentle iconoclast, is back and his new book was well worth waiting for. John has long been an advocate of careful self-observation, noticing small details, experimenting with original and varied procedures, factoring in the affective features of learning - and above all with challenging our routines, habits and preconceptions. This new book does all this and more. It is packed with practical ideas and fresh insights into what teachers do in classrooms. A must-read." Alan Maley Series Editor for Oxford Resource Books for teachers 25 years British Council English Language Officer "Small Changes in Teaching Big Results in Learning is aimed at both novice and experienced teachers of English as an additional language. The contexts in the examples are decidedly EFL and traditional in terms of the focus on grammar. The activities (never described as tasks) are explained with such detail that the novice teacher can understand them. The book can be used by individual teachers as well as in informal teacher training groups. The resource is user friendly and can easily be dipped into - a chronological reading is not necessary. Each chapter is accompanied by videos, freely available on the internet, that demonstrate the activities. Making Small Changes in Teaching may appear deceptively simple in that it focuses on the detail of teaching and learning activities, but Fanselow's underlying and primary concern is to challenge our classroom routines, habits and practices through analysis, together with our students, of classroom transcripts. Such a process is both challenging and transformational and yet infrequently practised." Margaret Kitchen, University of Aukland (review in the TESOLANZ Journal, Volume 26, December 2018)
