Henry Dashwood lives on the estate of his wealthy bachelor uncle with his second wife and their three daughters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret. When his uncle dies, and then one year later Henry dies, the three sisters and their mother move from Norland Park, the estate where the sisters grew up, to the very modest Barton Cottage. In their time there they meet with a range of new experiences, love, and further heartbreak. Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, England, in 1775 to a family on the lower fringes of the English gentry. Her father George was the rector of the Anglican parish at their village of Steventon from 1765 until 1801. She had six brothers, and an older sister--like her mother named Cassandra--with whom she was very close. Jane and Cassandra were sent to Oxford to be educated by Mrs. Ann Cawley, moving together to Southampton later in the year, but the girls returned home in the autumn after they had caught typhus and Jane nearly died. Jane was then home educated, but also went to boarding school in Reading in 1785. She wrote stories for her family's amusement, and longer drafts--some using the quiet of her father's rectory--of what would later become her famous novels. These include Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815) and, published posthumously, Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818). Having relocated with her family to Bath after her father's retirement, when he died in 1805, her brother Edward offered their mother and the two sisters a settled life in a cottage on his estate in Chawton. She lived there for the last eight years of her life, and died (likely of Addison's disease or Hodgkin's lymphoma) in 1817.

Book excerpt: This special edition of Sense and Sensibility includes the famous illustrations by Charles Edmond Brock, created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock's younger brother, Henry, also illustrated Austen's books and joined him in illustrating other Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions. Sense and Sensibility, first published in 1811, was Austen's first published novel. The story revolves around the Misses Dashwood, Elinor and Marianne, left in reduced circumstances after their father's death. Their new home is a cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak. Marianne meets the dashing John Willoughby who courts her with poetry and flowers. Meanwhile, staid, sober neighbor Colonel Brandon also falls in love with Marianne, but she makes her preference for his rival clear. Elinor is in love with the diffident Edward Ferrars, a young man of good breeding and high moral standing. Their sentiments are quite compatible but his ambitious sister Fanny has other plans for him and works to separate these kindred souls. As true love finds its way to persevering over all obstacles, the impetuous sister gains maturity and balance and the cautious sister has her emotional awakening.

Two sisters, one practical and full of commonsense, the other a passionate and emotional creature, an uncaring brother and his avaricious wife, a handsome rake and a faithful gentleman - these are some of the unforgettable characters who make Jane Austen's first published novel, Sense and Sensibility such a delightful, witty and timeless classic. The novel was published under the pseudonym "A Lady" by its shy and retiring nineteen-year-old author, Jane Austen, in 1811. She was the daughter of a country rector and lived all her life in the circle of her large and loving family in a little village in Hampshire, England. There is very little autobiographical material available about her, as her well-meaning relatives burned and destroyed most of her diaries and letters after her death. Sense and Sensibility is a charming story of two sisters who see life from two very different viewpoints. When their father suddenly dies, leaving his entire estate to their half-brother John, the sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, their mother and youngest sister Margaret are thrown at the financial mercy of John and his mean-minded wife, Fanny. Mrs Dashwood and her daughters soon realize that they are not welcome at their former home Norland Hall. Fanny's brother Edward Ferrars, who is quite different from his greedy and graceless sister, arrives and begins to form an attachment to Elinor, which is violently opposed by Fanny. Mrs Dashwood is hurt and bewildered, but finally realizes that they have no option but to leave. They move to Devonshire, where Mrs Dashwood's cousin, Sir John Middleton welcomes them and helps them to find suitable lodgings. While out walking one rainy evening, Marianne suffers a small accident and is rescued by the suave and dashing John Willoughby. She falls passionately in love with him. iBoo World's Best Classics iBoo Press releases World's Best Classics, uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work. Book excerpt: The family of Dashwood had long been settled in Sussex. Their estate was large, and their residence was at Norland Park, in the centre of their property, where, for many generations, they had lived in so respectable a manner as to engage the general good opinion of their surrounding acquaintance. The late owner of this estate was a single man, who lived to a very advanced age, and who for many years of his life, had a constant companion and housekeeper in his sister. But her death, which happened ten years before his own, produced a great alteration in his home; for to supply her loss, he invited and received into his house the family of his nephew Mr. Henry Dashwood, the legal inheritor of the Norland estate, and the person to whom he intended to bequeath it. In the society of his nephew and niece, and their children, the old Gentleman's days were comfortably spent. His attachment to them all increased.
