Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Centennial History of the Patrons of Husbandry A number of books have been published dealing with the founding and early history of the Grange, and what they called the Granger Movement, all of which have been more or less helpful in preparing this history. My trouble has not been to find material, but to determine what to use of the material at hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Origin and Early History of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Origin and Early History of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry in the United States Classic Reprint written by James Wallace Darrow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and Early History of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry in the United States Believing that earnest Patrons of Husbandry would be interested in perusing a history of the origin, and the early days, of our Order, I was constrained to prepare this little brochure and send it out on its mission of information, trusting that it would receive kindly consideration at the hands of the Grange fraternity. It makes no claim to literary merit or embellishment, nor does it undertake to give a history of the Order, or of the things accomplished by the Order, during all the years since its organization. It would take a volume of much larger dimensions to chronicle, even briefly, the things accomplished by the Grange in the farmers' interests. But it docs claim to give a concise, accurate and unembellished account of the foundation of the Grange and a somewhat detailed history of the first decade or so of its existence. In the preparation of the manuscript for this little History, I was kindly given access to all the original documents and the hundreds of letters written by the "Founders" of the Order, which are still in the possession of Brother O. H. Kelley of Washington, D. C., and to his "History of the Grange" I am indebted for much of the historical information herein presented. From other sources, particularly from those who were indirectly associated with the organization in its early years, much has been learned which I now pass along to Patrons of Husbandry everywhere, that they may know of the struggles and triumphs, the successes and failures, the hopes and fears of the founders of the Grange. May it not teach us still greater reverence for those who, in those early years, builded even better than they knew, and inspire in us all a loftier appreciation of the noble precepts of our beneficent Order! Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Book excerpt: In this book the author, an investigative journalist, traces the social history of marijuana from its origins to its emergence in the 1960s as a defining force in an ongoing culture war. He describes how the illicit marijuana subculture overcame government opposition and morphed into a multibillion-dollar industry. In 1996, Californians voted to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. Similar laws have followed in several other states, but not without antagonistic responses from federal, state, and local law enforcement. The author draws attention to underreported scientific breakthroughs that are reshaping the therapeutic landscape: medical researchers have developed promising treatments for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, chronic pain, and many other conditions that are beyond the reach of conventional cures. This book is an examination of the medical, recreational, scientific, and economic dimensions of the world's most controversial plant.
