Book Considerations in Ceramic Friction and Wear Measurements

Download or read book Considerations in Ceramic Friction and Wear Measurements written by DE. Deckman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical ceramic materials offer tremendous potential in a wide variety of engineering applications. Their unique blend of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties provide innovative design opportunities for advanced concepts such as low-heat rejection engines, high-efficiency gas turbines, high temperature bearings, and high-speed, high-precision cutting tools. Unfortunately, many of the critical friction and wear (tribological) properties of advanced ceramics are not well defined or understood. Research in materials science of advanced ceramics is developing very rapidly. As materials change and new materials are constantly being developed, the evaluation of these materials for tribological applications becomes a critical issue. This paper explores several important considerations in friction and wear testing of ceramic materials. Detailed test sample characterization is required to define the materials pair. Sample preparation, selection of load and speed, environmental control, and contamination effects are crucial to the meaningful tribological evaluation of ceramic materials. Specific examples are given using a modified four-ball wear tester with alumina specimens.

Book Sliding Wear Testing and Data Analysis Strategies for Advanced Engineering Ceramics

Download or read book Sliding Wear Testing and Data Analysis Strategies for Advanced Engineering Ceramics written by PJ. Blau and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of wear tests are conducted each year on advanced engineering ceramics, and the number will undoubtedly continue to grow. Most of these tests are conducted to screen or evaluate ceramic-based materials for specific applications; a smaller number are ostensibly conducted for more basic research purposes. Significantly, even the more generic testing is often justified by identifying potential applications for the results of that work. Most wear test methodology is derived from wear tests developed for metals and alloys. Use of such traditional methods is often adequate, especially if the method was based on a close simulation of the intended application. Differences in response to environment, fracture, and fatigue-related factors embodied in wear testing ceramics may, however, require modifications in testing strategy and in interpreting the significance of the results. Long incubation times for catastrophic wear transitions in ceramics may make accelerated or short-term testing risky. This paper outlines a strategy for designing sliding wear tests for ceramic materials using several examples for polycrystalline ceramics and ceramic composites. It also describes one procedure in which wear transition diagram methodology, developed for lubricated metals, can be adapted for use with ceramics.

Book Friction and Wear of Ceramics

Download or read book Friction and Wear of Ceramics written by Bikramjit Basu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the area of tribology broadly, providing important introductory chapters to fundamentals, processing, and applications of tribology. The book is designed primarily for easy and cohesive understanding for students and practicing scientists pursuing the area of tribology with focus on materials. This book helps students and practicing scientists alike understand that a comprehensive knowledge about the friction and wear properties of advanced materials is essential to further design and development of new materials. The description of the wear micromechanisms of various materials will provide a strong background to the readers as how to design and develop new tribological materials. This book also places importance on the development of new ceramic composites in the context of tribological applications. Some of the key features of the book include: Fundamentals section highlights the salient issues of ceramic processing and mechanical properties of important oxide and non-oxide ceramic systems; State of the art research findings on important ceramic composites are included and an understanding on the behavior of silicon carbide (SiC) based ceramic composites in dry sliding wear conditions is presented as a case study; Erosion wear behavior of ceramics, in which case studies on high temperature erosion behavior of SiC based composites and zirconium diboride (ZrB2) based composites is also covered; Wear behavior of ceramic coatings is rarely discussed in any tribology related books therefore a case study explaining the abrasion wear behavior of WC-Co coating is provided. Finally an appendix chapter is included in which a collection of several types of questions including multiple choice, short answer and long answer are provided.
