The papers selected for this volume give only part of the reason for that judgment, for there was an uncommon quality of the man himself which attracted and stimulated - inspired may not be too strong a word - many of those who knew him. His talents were manifest in many fields, in none more brilliantly and effectively than in linguistics. He had a truly phenomenal knowledge of languages; linguists have commented that his command of the facts, of specific linguistic phenomena, was unsurpassed among linguistic scientists. Sapir began his linguistic studies in the field of Germanics while he was still an undergraduate. Early in his graduate work he undertook the recording and analysis of an American Indian language, Takelma, and throughout his professional career he carried on intensive work within the various families of American Indian languages. When a speaker of the West African language Jabo (Gweabo) was found working in a Chicago bowling alley, Sapir availed himself of the opportunity to extend his linguistic knowledge of the African field. In later years, his interests turned again to problems in the Indo-European group and he found time to continue work on languages of the Sinitic and Semitic stocks as well. In all his work on these diverse tongues, Sapir showed a sure grasp of the basic form and the interlocking elements of the structure of each language. The Sanskrit scholar, Franklin Edgerton, has put it thus: "He seemed able to meet every one of us on our own grounds, to see the minutiae of many provinces as with a magnifying glass, and at the same time effortlessly to survey the whole terrain." And his ability to view the whole scope of language extended beyond the sheerly formal aspects of speech. Díaz-Guerrero combines a strong theoretical interest in the relationship of culture to personality with a pragmatic concern for methodology. This collection of essays is rooted both in studies of Mexican psychology as an independent phenomenon and in cross-cultural comparisons of Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Anglo-Americans. Dr. Díaz-Guerrero discusses Mexican attitudes toward sex roles and the family, motivations of the Mexican worker, and other topics. He compares Mexican and American concepts of respect and analyzes the relation between neurosis and the Mexican family structure. He attempts to determine the degree of mental, personal, and social health of urban Mexicans. The importance of basic sociocultural premises, such as "The mother is the dearest person in existence," and "The stricter the parents are, the better the children turn out," is explored. In one essay, Díaz-Guerrero notes the differences in typical reactions to stress in Mexico and the United States, concluding that the American pattern involves active response to stress, whereas the Mexican response tends to be more passive. Psychology of the Mexican deals with a variety of historical, psychological, biological, social, economic, and anthropological variables, attempting to treat them in a scientific way through the use of carefully constructed questionnaires, with detailed statistical analyses of the results. On the basis of data obtained in this way, the author formulates broad conceptual schemes with immediate application to the understanding of human behavior in real situations. He is particularly intrigued by the way the individual relates to the significant people in his environment. For the Mexican, he says, such interpersonal relationships are the most important part of life; in contrast to the American insistence on liberty and equality, Mexican culture emphasizes affiliation and love.

Recently, however, there has been an explosion of research on linguistic relativity, carried out by numerous scholars interested in the interaction between language and nonlinguistic cognition. This book surveys the rapidly accruing research on this topic, much of it carried out in the last decade. Structured so as to be accessible to students and scholars in linguistics, psychology, and anthropology, it first introduces crucial concepts in the study of language and cognition. It then explores the relevant experimentally oriented research, focusing independently on the evidence for relativistic effects in spatial orientation, temporal perception, number recognition, color discrimination, object/substance categorization, gender construal, as well as other facets of cognition. This is the only book to extensively survey the recent work on linguistic relativity, and should serve as a critical resource for those concerned with the topic.
