Book Evidence Based Assessment in ASD Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Evidence Based Assessment in ASD Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Kenneth Aitken and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advocating for an increased emphasis on evidence-based practice, this book describes and analyses a wide range of available Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment measures. The author offers guidance on how to evaluate services and programmes and how to recognise which will be most effective in different scenarios for people with differing needs. A wide range of measures are reviewed in detail, including assessments used in situations often ignored in overviews relevant to ASD, such as assessments of internet addiction, response to traumatic stress, and criminal offending risk and witness credibility. This book is an invaluable resource to professionals who support people with ASDs, including social workers and teachers, and who are under increasing pressure to reliably assess which services, programmes and therapies are effective and fit-for-purpose.

Book A Developmental Scale of Early Social Cognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book A Developmental Scale of Early Social Cognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Philippa von Rabenau Lewington and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One presents three papers. The first paper reports a meta-analysis exploring the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in rare genetic syndromes. Further analyses consider sources of variance in the data, evaluating the influence of methodological factors and sample characteristics on ASD prevalence estimates. The second paper is an empirical study examining the developmental trajectory of early social cognitive skills in children with ASD. The third provides a summary of the reported research, for dissemination to research participants and professionals in clinical and educational services. The second volume consists of five Clinical Practice Reports (CPRs). CPR one presents two formulations, using cognitive-behavioural and systemic models, exploring anxiety experienced by a 50-year-old man presenting at a community learning disability service. CPR two describes a service evaluation project evaluating staff attitudes towards the use of the 'Friends and Family Test' feedback tool. CPR three presents a case study, reporting a systemic intervention with a 44-year-old woman experiencing low mood. CPR four is a single-case experiment, evaluating the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioural intervention for self-harming behaviour linked to low self-esteem. Finally, an abstract for CPR five is presented, summarising an oral case presentation describing an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy intervention for a 78-year-old man experiencing low mood following a stroke.

Book Social Cognition Autism Spectrum Disorders and Sexuality

Download or read book Social Cognition Autism Spectrum Disorders and Sexuality written by Marcy Schuster and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality is an important factor in examining quality of life for most people. Individuals diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder may be at a special disadvantage when it comes to exploring their sexuality and benefiting from traditional sex education programs as a result of deficits in social cognition. Professionals and parents may misconstrue these deficits as a lack of interest in exploring sexuality. This review will examine sex education programs provided to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders who are not diagnosed with any intellectual disabilities in light of deficits in social cognition. Suggestions will be provided for sex education programs which consider deficits in social cognition.

Book The Strange Stories Film Task

Download or read book The Strange Stories Film Task written by Kim Murray and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are characterised by difficulties in social interaction. High functioning (HF) adults with an ASD diagnosis often report subtle social cognitive difficulties. The main aim of the study was to develop and validate a novel measure of social cognition (The Strange Stories Film Task (SSFt) and in doing so overcome a number of limitations to available measures in the field. Method: The measure consisted of acted scenarios designed to capture the subtle mentalizing difficulties observed in adults with high functioning ASD. 20 participants were recruited to pilot the new measure. A final test set was produced and shown to a group of 20 well diagnosed HFASD adults and matched controls. Participants also completed well established measures of social cognition and questionnaire measures of empathy, alexithymia and ASD traits. Results: The SSFt was more effective at differentiating the HFASD group from the control group showing greater levels of sensitivity. Group differences could not be attributed to general cognitive factors. The SSFt was associated with the traditional measures of social cognition. Performance on the SSFt was associated with measures of empathy and ASD symptomatology. No associations with alexithymia were observed. Conclusion: The SSFt is a potentially useful tool to indentify mentalizing difficulties in HFASD samples. In addition, the measure was sensitive to individual differences in mentalizing abilities in non-autistic adults. The SSFt showed adequate convergent validity. The elements of the measure targeting social interaction abilities rather than understanding proved the most sensitive. These findings are discussed with regard to clinical implications and future research.

Book Inclusive Neuropsychological and Genomic Analysis of Social Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Schizophrenia

Download or read book Inclusive Neuropsychological and Genomic Analysis of Social Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Schizophrenia written by Heesu Kim (Ally) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science that has shaped our current knowledge of psychiatric conditions has often relied on non-diverse, non-inclusive methods and samples. Typically, studies of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ), including both phenotypic investigations -- which use behavioral tests -- and genotypic investigations -- which employ population-based genetic data -- have relied on tests and/or samples that resemble only the Caucasian majority. In order to investigate how diversity could be more firmly baked into the fabric of psychiatric research, I investigated a widely-used phenotypic measure for social cognition ASD and SCZ, called the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). I show that an improved successor, the Multiracial Reading the Mind in the Eyes test (MRMET), fares equally well or better than the Caucasian version on multiple fronts. Second, I surveyed the process of computing non-categorical genomic risk scores, called the polygenic risk score (PRS), and asked how sample selection limitations typical of genomic research may lead to decreased generalizability of the PRS. Third, I assessed how the limitations in both phenotypic and genetic research may come together to affect scientific conclusions in joint genotype-phenotype research. Finally, I assess how the integration of typical genotypic (PRS) and phenotypic (behavioral factor) information yield informative yet distinct results in a European and a non-European sample. Together, these studies point the way towards improved diversity and systematic inclusivity in modern scientific approaches that aim to define diseases of human behavior.

Book Asperger s Syndrome and Jail

Download or read book Asperger s Syndrome and Jail written by Will Attwood and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Attwood was finishing a three-year sentence in prison when he was formally diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome for the first time. After his diagnosis he recognised just how much it had been affecting his life behind bars. This book is a practical advice guide for people with autism who have been sentenced to time in prison. Will shares his first-hand knowledge of what to expect and how to behave within the penal system. He sheds light on topics that are important for people with autism, answering questions such as: How should you act with inmates and guards? How do you avoid trouble? What about a prison's environmental stimuli may cause you anxiety? His thoughtful, measured writing debunks rumours about daily life in prison, and the useful tips and observations he offers will help anyone with autism prepare for the realities of spending time incarcerated, and be enormously helpful to those working with offenders on the autism spectrum.

Book The Cognitive and Physiological Correlates of Anxiety in Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book The Cognitive and Physiological Correlates of Anxiety in Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Matthew J. Hollocks and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are known to suffer from a high prevalence of co-morbid anxiety disorders (-40%). However, there has been little research examining which physiological or cognitive factors may contribute to this high prevalence rate. Therefore, my research aimed to investigate the underpinnings of anxiety in ASD using a range of measures: 1) the physiological response to psychosocial stress, 2) attentional bias to threat stimuli and 3) neuropsychological measures of executive function and social cognition. The study includes three independently sampled groups of children and adolescents including those with 1) ASD and co-occurring anxiety disorders, 2) ASD - without anxiety disorders and 3) healthy controls. In response to psychosocial stress test (consisting of giving a five minute presentation), participants with ASD and co-occurring anxiety diagnoses displayed a reduced salivary cortisol and heart rate response compared with controls. In addition, the group with ASD and anxiety had a distinct pattern of heart rate responding compared with those with ASD and no anxiety disorder and controls. Groups were also tested on their tendency to bias attention towards emotional face and word stimuli. Results indicated that those with ASD and anxiety disorder had a significant attentional bias towards threatening faces, but not words, compared with both those with ASD-only and controls. These results remained significant when controlling for group differences in emotional face recognition. Finally, a structural equation modelling approach was used to establish that executive functions, but not social cognition, significantly predict greater symptoms of anxiety within a sample of ASD adolescents.

Book Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Criminal Justice System

Download or read book Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Criminal Justice System written by Dr Clare S. Allely and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the criminal justice system. Rather than being the perpetrators of offending behaviour, individuals with ASD are more likely to be the victims of crime. However, there is nevertheless a small subset of individuals with ASD who do offend, and this book provides an in-depth understanding of how certain features of ASD may provide the context of vulnerability to engaging in a number of types of offending behaviours. Chapters focus on arson or fire-setting; cybercrime (e.g., hacking); online sexual offending such as the viewing of indecent child imagery; offline sexual offending; violent crime; stalking; terroristic behaviour (including radicalisation and extremism); bestiality or zoophilia; and also extreme violence such as mass shooting and serial homicide. This book also outlines the ways in which a defendant with ASD may present in court and how they may exhibit behaviour which could be misinterpreted and perceived negatively, leading to an unfair trial. Lastly, it discusses the need to identify the impact that ASD can have on the capacity to form the requisite criminal intent and offers appropriate court adaptions to support individuals with ASD during court proceedings. This book is ideal for criminal defence lawyers and practitioners in psychology, psychiatry, and social work as well as policy makers and reformers.

Book Crime and Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Crime and Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Neil Brewer and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can - given certain situational conditions - make individuals more vulnerable to becoming caught up in criminal activity and vulnerable to unfavourable interactions once in the criminal justice system. Guided by empirical research, psychological theory and illustrative case studies involving adults with ASD who have been implicated in crimes, Robyn L. Young and Neil Brewer explain why. They examine the pivotal cognitive, social and behavioural characteristics unique to ASD (such as weak Theory of Mind, restricted interests and acute sensory sensitivities) that - individually or in interaction - may contribute to individuals becoming involved in illegal activities. They then discuss how these same characteristics can result in ongoing ineffective interaction with the criminal justice system. Arguing that the forensic assessment of individuals with ASD requires substantial redevelopment to clarify the key deficits contributing to criminal behaviour, the authors highlight the need for, and desirable nature of, intervention programs to minimize the criminal vulnerability of adults with ASD and to prepare them for interactions with the criminal justice system. A final section raises some major unanswered questions and issues for future research. This book will be of immeasurable interest to criminal justice professionals including probation officers, social workers, clinical and forensic psychologists, police officers, lawyers and judges, as well as students of these professions.
